Do you also think the poems I have included below sound/look/feel similar ? Last edited: 16-Apr-12 01:46 PM

The Solitary Reaper Behold her, single in the field, Yon solitary Highland Lass! Reaping and singing by herself; Stop here, or gently pass! Alone she cuts and binds the grain, And sings a melancholy strain; O listen! for the Vale profound Is overflowing with the sound. No Nightingale did ever chaunt More welcome notes to weary bands Of travellers in some shady haunt, Among Arabian sands: A voice so shrilling ne'er was heard In spring-time from the Cuckoo-bird, Breaking the silence of the seas Among the farthest Hebrides. Will no one tell me what she sings?-- Perhaps the plaintive numbers flow For old, unhappy, far-off things, And battles long ago: Or is it some more humble lay, Familiar matter of to-day? Some natural sorrow, loss, or pain, That has been, and may be again? Whate'er the theme, the Maiden sang As if her song could have no ending; I saw her singing at her work, And o'er the sickle bending;-- I listen'd, motionless and still; And, as I mounted up the hill, The music in my heart I bore, Long after it was heard no more.

Cheliji, Mathika dui kabita haru ko subject eutai bhayepani, dui katita ekdamai bhinna chhan. Wordsworth pani ghas katne keti sanga prabhabhit bhayera lekheka ra, euta completely isolated independant event ma devkota pani testai euta ghas katne keti sanga prabhabhit bhayera lekheko huna sakcha. Euta ramri eklai geet gaudai ghas kateko dekhera kun chahi kabiko man ma kabita nafuros? Kabi nai nabhayeko manche pani "Main sayar to nahin, magar ye hasin, jabse dekha maine tujhko, sayari aagai" bhane jasto kabi bnna thalcha. Ra pani, yedi Wordsworth ko kabita padherai mahakabi influence hunu bhayeko bhaye pani, tyo kabita lekhna lai, waha le Wordsworth bata insipiration bahek aru k hi paunu bhayeko chaina, testo chhanda banauna wordsworth ko shabda harule waha lai kunai help bhayena. May be I am in denail to agree that mahakabi plagiarised, but I don't see much copying here. If anything exists in between those two, it is inspiration, nothing more. May be I am wrong, but thats what I see.

Thanx for reviving the thread. After going through this thread, I started reading few essays and writings of Shankar Lamichane. I was mesmerized by his "sandarva laxmi jayanti". Thanx to the poster who posted that link :). Having never heard much of him before, he not only did justice to his legacy, but he makes me realize Laxmi prasad devkota is simply at a different level (like how shakespeare is to English). It is hard to believe that Laxmi Prasad Devkota needed to plagiarize, for a person who was able two dictate 12 stories in one night each with a different plot and twists. As GT says, he was a voracious reader of english literature as well. He might have been trying to translate it in Nepali in his own way. I also got a copy of Sirish ko Phool. While I haven't finished it, it is amazing how the female writer writes from the male-soldier's perspective. simply amazing so far!

dissident ji, Thanks for your input. I did not say and I can never ever say that Devkota plagiarized. When I read Devkota's poem for the first time long time back, I thought it was exactly like Wordsworth's, both have brilliantly described the way she sings, the way she reaps the grass. I thought "Hasiya geet" was a translation of "The Solitary Reaper". Now, when I am reading both these poems again and again, I feel its not translated because they do not match word by word. However, I do feel that Devkota must have been inspired/influenced by Wordsworth very much, because both these poems have same setting, and subject matter. If I am wrong and Devkota never ever read "The Solitary reaper" before writing this poem( which is very unlikely), all I can say is "Great minds think alike" . Happy Tuesday!!

The Solitary Reaper.... By Sorijini Naidoo.... what a poem I remember reading the poem in Gulmohar book - Class 6..... The teacher teaching us that poem was Late Poet Machhendra Pradhan. He took 4 days to teach the poem, explaining every meaning that could come out of the lines..... Its my all time favourite..... Thank you Cheli The list of the best writer/poet in Nepali literature may not every enlist late Machhendra Pradhan, but his noble "Nilkantha" won him the highest literary award in India and many other. He may not be well known but would have served Nepali literature well if he would not have been entangled in family life & business.
