Hello,

Any recommendation for parents who have GC & been here or stuck here for couple of months. I need to get health insurance & looking/shopping around but it's just too costly & limited coverage.
Thank you for you feedback & recommendation.

Go to your state website for exchange insurance and try to apply for online. Or u can visit in person too, there is a person called insurance nevigator, they will put all the info in their system and tell u list of insurance they qualify then u decided to choose which one to get.Good luck.

It get really expensive tho for someone over the age of 65, dont it? And it only covers 80 -20 even if they get one. Best is Medicaid but depending on the state it's hard to get it.there are Nepalis who have figured out but they wont tell u. This thread will die out too without helpful info like many have in the past.I tried to get insurance for my parent but it was around 2k a month. It was easy to just go to Nepal for big medical stuff but due to covid that too is not possible.

Thank you Chicagoan, Dev_ & ehh02 for your feedback.
I did get an estimate for 1K when talking to the private insurer,

Regarding Obamacare since they are listed as my depended & due to my income tax bracket. Not sure if they would be eligible. But I will do further research & let me see what i can find. I will share if I find anything that might be helpful for all of us.

Thanks again!!

Waiyaat!!! People just open mouth like clueless... Where do you live? In which State..this is the dame important thing so people can respond you with their own experience from the state where they live.

You all know every state has its own way of doing things when it comes to healthcare for seniors.

If you live in Maryland, Montgomery County, Maryland Health connection,  if both over 65, and GC holder, regardless of your income, they can get a maximum of $82 for both of them per month with Kaiser Permanente.
Carefirst is cheaper, but Kaiser Permanente coverage and services are excellent.

Good luck!!

I'm still waiting for some insights please if you know how a 65 year plus with a green card can get a kaiser for 40 bucks a month. She lives in CO. I tried to get it on exchange but nothing less than 1000k and that too doesnt cover most of the things, really shitty one like 60 or 50 % coverage ,everything out of pocket.
Talked to county, they said call medicare , called Medicare they said since she hasnt worked 10 yrs in the US it will be 600 a month which doesnt cover hospital stay. Went back to county to talk to medicaid ,finally sent an email saying she diesnt qualify cuz she is not a citizen . Their policy clearly says gc for 5+ years qualify. It's hard to talk to them. Usually takes a month to schedule phone interview and they either tell to call other entities or send a letter after weeks why she do t qualify, and the reason is she needs medicare or she is not a citizen, so basically back to square one cuz Medicare will say she needs to work for 10 years.
We would gladly take trips to Nepal and get major medical procedures in India or Nepal but die to covid that too is also not possible.

During open enrollment, my understanding is that you will get insurance through the marketplace (affordable care~Obamacare). Despite the fact that the price shown to you may appear very high, you will be subsidized and pay less than $100 (this dependes upon income). I'm not sure why you want your parents to be financially dependent on you. They can pay less than $30 a month if they can file their taxes on their own with little to no wages. If you live in Maryland, you can use the Maryland Health connection app or visit a local office to do so. They will ask you to sign a piece of paper (to show you don't have any) if you don't have any money. There are several choices, one of which is keiser.

They are not eligible for medicare if not in US for 5 year. Tra tax bharne bela sponsor ko cha bhane ra k matlab bhayo ra, they can file themself independently. If they file themself uha haru ko income hudaina then they will get subsidy for health insurence.

Aksshre ji, thanks a lot for the info. I did go to a market place office in 2015 when they had booths and local offices to educate about Obama care. but they turned me down saying she don't qualify cuz she's been here less than 5 yrs at that time.
Do u think I can still apply her for Obama care this time of the year?
Also, now she's been here for more than 5 years do u think she is eligible to receive medicaid?

I also put her in my taxes as dependent cuz I didnt know any better.

5 year requirement is for medicaid (also depends upon income) not for healthcare plans obtained through the ACA’s Health Insurance Exchange(marketplace). Government subsidies are available through the Marketplace. When you obtain your health insurance through Healthcare.gov, you can apply to see if you qualify for assistance to pay your premiums. Government subsidies work like getting a discount on your health insurance. The discount can only be used through the Marketplace or a similar state-run exchange. These subsidies are sent directly from the federal government to your health insurance provider.

I'm not sure if you'll be able to apply in the middle of the year. Normally, open enrollment takes place between November and January. However, you might be able to enroll due to Covid; I will call and inquire with the local office.

Sujhab, I been in a similar situation like you. I would like to share few things based on my experience to help you navigate through the process.

First, check Medicaid eligibility for your state. Every state is different. If your parents are eligible, the cost can be significantly lower than the coverage from the market place.

If they are not eligible for Medicaid; go to healthcare.gov and create account for your parents. Based on your Tax bracket, you will get a Tax Credit which will lower your Health Insurance Cost. Income between 100% and 400% Federal Poverty Level(FPL) gets Tax credit in all states. You will get all the necessary information about your eligibility and Tax credit once you start filling the application in healthcare.gov.

After you complete the application, you will know your tax credit. With that tax credit, you can shop around for the insurance available in the market place. You will pay the difference if you choose the health insurance that cost more than the tax credit. However, if you claim your parents as independent with no income for tax purpose, they can still get the coverage from the market place, but they will not get any Tax credit. You need to make minimum FPL income as defined by state to get any Tax credit.

Lastly, if your parents are over 65 and not eligible for Medicare, you might need to get a Denial Letter form Social Security Administration (SSA). Usually the insurance company denies the claim for anyone over 65 because they assume that the individual already had a Medicare coverage.

Thanks guys for sharing info.my experience has been not so encouraging. I did find some insurance options in exchange but the out of pocket costs are ridiculous like 60 40 , with high premiums like 700 per month.
Medicare didnt work cuz she has not worked 10 yrs. She does qualify but by paying 600 a month for the one that doesnt cover hospital stays.
Medicaid: they say she needs to apply medicaid 1st and they will cover whays not covered by Medicare. Told them she didnt qualify for free one and cabt offers 600 then they took her info and sent denial letter in a month says she dobt qualify since she not a citizen. She has been living here for 7 yrs now.
We have been covering put ofbpocket pocket for mall stuff and were going to Nepal for major ones so far.
I got different answers frm. Different ppl at the Medicaid office. I'll go visit them personally sone they should be open now.

As far as I can tell, if you remove her from your tax and file her own tax and pay her a small amount for your child care or home care (or any other thing you can think of ) so that she has some income to record, she will be eligible for bigger subsidies on marketplace due to her low income.
