Yes, there are bad Nepalese employers.  To take undue advantage of someone weaker than you  is immoral, unethical and in many cases illegal but is a sad reality in America that is hard to change.

Most small retail stores of the type you talk about should not be hiring workers *at all*. Retail is typically a low margin business and costs have to be kept very low to survive. Let's do the math. In the Boston area, a typical 1000-feet store can cost you anywhere from $3000 to 5000+ in rent depending on the location. If you invested a $100,000 in buying a convenient store and want to break even in two-years, you are looking to have about $45,000 in monthly sales for  a monthly profit of $4500 (assuming an average  profit of 10% ).

Take away the $3,000 rent and you are left with $1500 to either pay our self or hire someone. If the owner hires a full-time person for 40 hours @ $8 per hour (MA minimum wage)  that comes to about $1300 a month spent in wages. Which leaves the owner just about $200 to take home. So as you can see if they had to pay minimum wage, many of these stores will  be out of business; hence the shoddy hiring.

Unfortunately employers all across America do this, not Nepalese and not just retail store owners. Farmers hire illegal Mexicans for half of minimum wage. Many homeowners bring in Guatemalans and Salvadorians to paint their houses and spruce up their gardens for chump change. Add to that the current economic slump and this is totally a buyers market for unskilled labor.

There are many small businesses who do not hire below minimum wages but may not be able to give you as many hours. The trick is to work for someone who is not in the business for quick profits, someone who has long term vision of their business and does not cut corners. Such people may be  harder to find, especially in retail, but they are out there.

The fact is working illegally in retail is just a shitty job and like all shitty jobs nothing much will change about it.  The best way to avenge such employers is by studying hard, finishing  college, saying good bye to the shitty employers and getting a good professional job or starting your own business

Good luck.

Absolutely agree with Vivant!

GT bro, while your concern seems valid to some extent, I believe “Sosan” is a harsh word to use. You work at your will, and I don’t think anybody can force you to do something that you don’t want. Also, how the employer treats his employees comes out of his personal nature. I don’t think it varies much based on where his employee is from. Everybody is looking for an opportunity to take advantage of. USA is not called “a country of opportunities” for no reason :)

Thanks Vivant!  you assumed only one employee and 10% margin.  Normally, average mark up in gas station merchandize is 20% (accordng to one gas station owner) and number of employees is 2 to 3. (store is open from 5 am to 11 am).  Still the bottom line is probably the same as you got!  Quoting you: "The best way to avenge such employers is by studying hard, finishing  college, saying good bye to the shitty employers and getting a good professional job or starting your own business " and quoting Katziman: "i do not think anybody can force you to do something that you don’t want"

सबभन्दा पहिले त साझामा रहेका दुईटा नमुनाहरु sexy in sari र gaygoat लाई मेरो भन्नु sexy, you are not sexy whether you wear sari or keep दारी, it doesn't matter.

This is bullshyt..most small business owners make at least 7000 a month. i used to run a small convenient store, 3 in a US city like three times smaller than boston, no gas and easily making 6 to 8 k a month depending on the season. if someone is making 1500 from a business in boston , then they need to shut down their business and  go work in a call center or Indian restaurant, they'll make more. you guys are ready to use all kinda logic and reasoning to prove your invalid point, which is real sad.
Also, it's not easy to find professional job or open gas station just like that in the USA. you need papers. and you may see some crook Nepalis and internationals making papers cheating the system, but not everyone can do that, most students have conscience and they just can't do it, or they don't get a real chance. lots of Nepali professional workers worry about getting laid off and losing their h1b, or pending I485 process, which is like living in a constant fear for like 6 years , plus at least 4 years of schooling , so like 10 years, at least and let's say if everything goes well. then one fine day you will walk around the corner happily holding your green card and some ignorant comes and calls you a "sand nigger". and you go like hey i'm not even arabic. but the dumbos don't know where nepal is , for them everyone with dark skin is a sand nigger. yup, then you'll realize that it wasn't even worthing spending your prime time chasing for something which could never be yours.
Nepali students just don't have any options. It's like they get punished for one mistake they made in their life, that is to come here as students hoping to self finance. and if someone's going to say well then they should go back, then let me tell you it's easier to die then to go back to Nepal without accomplishing anything. coming to america is not like running to kfc. it takes years of savings and borrowing from a average Nepali family to send their children. it's a one way street for most Nepali families. Only cure , i see is to stay in Nepal and try to be creative. you can eat better food, have social life and when you walk down the street you can walk with dignity.

again, i don't know what this guy is calling small business but most restaurants and gas stations need people to work. you can't just run the restaurant by yourself and your buddi ; you need a waiter, a dish washer, a cook, 2 or 3 helpers at least. and you need someone to attend gas station cuz you can't work 15 hours at least every day without taking a break. so they would have to hire someone anyway. most Nepali business owners are the same people who were struggling few years ago working for other Nepalis in their restaurants or running around for papers. they are crooks  and  most of them have not gone to school and hung out with educated crowd who believe in treating others with dignity and equality. So what do crooks do when they have power to screw others who are powerless, yes SCREW others. and thats what they are doing. It's sad. I urge all Nepali students to not come here in their under graduate without good back up for financial support, yes the real one .

kalopani:  I do not own gas station nor sympathize with any one of them.  I am sure the owner of the gas station where you worked was paying you well when the store was making $6000 to $8000/month.  You did not state how much they paid you there, so i am assuminmg you were paid well.  Unfortunately, not all stores do that well.  I know at least 5 stores owned by Nepalese (gas station, 2 sub way sandwich, Quizno, and Blimpi) which had to be shut down due to losses they incurred.  They were in cities like Chicago, LA, and Dallas. Why do you think there are always small businesses like Gas station, sub way sandwich, or Quizno on sale?  Google for business for sale, you will find plenty.  Most of them are losing business.  Yes, there are some businesses doing excellent, and i think if you work for them, they will pay you well!  Students getting too low wages should be able to tell what kind of sale the store generating.

Also kalopani, a store generating $45000/month in sale as in the example of Vivant is above average store.  Not all store make that kind of sale.  Let us figure out the numbers for that store operated by husband and wife working 16 hrs/day, 7 days a week!

20% margin will give $9000 gross profit.

Expenses Rent: $3000

Utility - electricity (big freezes, coolers, 16 hr lighting, A/C or heaters): $500

Balance: $9000-$3500 = $6500

That is $3250 each for husband and wife each.

Since they work 16 hrs/day  x 7 days, it is 112 hrs/week (total 112 hrs/week x 4.25 week/month= 476 hrs/month), which is 2.8 times the normal work week. (people work 40 hrs /week in this country!)

If you consider how much they made each month working 40hrs/week, it comes out to be $3250/2.8 = $1160/month.  They made $3250/month because they worked equivalent to not just 2 shifts, but 2.8 shifts.  Running a business is hard in this country, as you can see!  Hourly wage comes out to be $3250/month / 476 hrs/month = $6.82/hrs!  So the owners are making $6.82/hr working 476hrs each month.

But wait, i have not yet deducted all the taxes they have to pay, for being a self employed individuals. -- 7.5% unemployment tax, 7.5% SS tax, not to mention state tax, federal tax.  You go figure out what is left now.  Is it $5/hr?  Where is  money left to pay their employees?

I did not even include other unexpected expenses like maintaining the store, fixing or reparing freezes, A/C unit and so on...

You stated students are in consant fear of being caught in the next 10 years, but so are those employers!

madheshi,

I did not  justwork in that store, i also ran that store, and it wasn't a gasstation. however, i have worked in gastations when i said 6 to 8 k, i meant profit so all your gibberish math is a waste of time. it was owned by one of my family members. so i know inside out of that place. and we were paying a partner 2000 a month as a salary over the shared profit.

you said, you didn't own a store but you kept going with your bs math. you know why people sell stores ? most people buy stores for cheap, run it and when it runs good sell them for profit. i know lots of people who have done that. now , i'm not saying that all business go on profit. i'm sure lot of people go on loss too, but again thats what my point was, if you're not incurring enough profit to make up for your own time at the store working there , then you shouldn't be hiring a Nepali student and try to maupulate them because of their visa restriction. remember, what the topic of this thread was?

Once gain kalopani:  i read your post too fast. So i missed the great lines of yours: Only cure , i see is to stay in Nepal and try to be creative. you can eat better food, have social life and when you walk down the street you can walk with dignity.

I agree wholeheartedly!  There was an article not too long ago in Newsweek or Time or magazine of that sort stating that the US is missing great talents from countries like India since some (or most?) are preferring to go back home after finishing PhD or so, simply because getting a GC requires just too long, as long as 10 years!  Some of the Indian enterpreneurs turned out to be very succesful in india during the same 10 yr period!  Why bother waiting here!

and madeshi, you are saying a store a store generating $45000/month in sale as in the example of Vivant is above average store. what makes your make that claim? have you done research on all small businesses in the USA, or that is just some random number you came up with your make  your point here. what kind of business you're talking , if you're talking about a gas station. let me tell you, from my work experences in different gasstations and stores most gasstation easliy make about 4000 dollars sales in a day. so that random 45000 a month in sales number you're trying to use to make your point is a total b.s. your whole math is based on b.s so it does not make any sense. your genius math concluded that store owners make less than 5 dollars an hour which is a total grabage. if that was the case most internations would be working as janators or not even immigrating to the usa.and you would never see them buying a house, sending their children to good schools or expanding their business. another random variable you use out of your assumption is the 20% profit margin. again, what kind of business is that? if it's a restaurant they might make more than that, if it's a gastation , it depends if they're making that money in inside sales or on gas. gas sales are usually to bring in the customers so they buy inside the store, inside stores have higher profit margin. your gas sales should cover your fixed costs like electricily, rent etc and at least pay part of your employee cost. Again, i'm not saying all businesses run by Nepali or desi are profitable, some may go on loss, but that was my whole point if you're not making enough profit to even make up for you time and energy you're puting in at your business then you shouldn't be hiring a Nepali student so you can manupulate, just cuz he happen to be less fortunate in this country because of his visa status.
