A man is leaving home to catch a plane for business purpose. The regular night watchman stops the man and says, "Sir i had a dream last night. The plane that you are to travel on crashed and everyone on board died." The man was superstitious and thus cancelled the flight. Sure enough the plane did crash and everyone on board died. The man was very thankful to the watchman. So the next day, the man called the watchman, gave him 5000 bucks and fired him. Now why would he fire him?

A king has 4 prisoners about to be sentenced to death. But he decides to give them a chance. He asks the 4 to line up in a single file. The shortest person A is at first. The tallest B is in second. The third person C slightly shorter than B is third. And the last one D, who is slightly shorter than C. They cannot talk to each other. A can see noone. B can see A. C can see only B. D can see B and C. The king takes 2 black hats and 2 white hats and puts one on each. He then asks the prisoners to guess the colour of their hat telling them that there are 2 black and 2 white hats. HE says if one person gets it right, they all live. If one person gets it wrong, they all die. For 5 minutes, the prisoners are quiet. Then one of the prisoner makes a correct guess and they are all set free. So who gets it correct?. And how?.
freedom2012 · Mar 5, 2013 12:50 AM
It doesn't really matter what A wears. Two Cases: 1. A: Red B: Black C: Black D: Red D can tell he is wearing Red cap since he can see B and C wearing Black caps. 2. A: Black B: Black C: Red D:Red D can't be the one to tell what he is wearing because he doesn't see A and B and C have different colors. However, since D is not speaking out, C knows he can't have the same cap as of B, (or it would be case 1), so he answers the opposite of what B is wearing-- in this case Red. bshal · Mar 5, 2013 12:15 PM
If you take the same child as the reference point in counting, the answer is 24.

The 18th child and the 7th child are facing each other. So, there are 18-7 = 11 children in half the circle, 22 in the full circle.

freedom bro: why Thursday? slackdemic: why Tuesday?
bshal · Mar 5, 2013 3:05 PM
I realised the contradicton of my earlier answer as soon as i posted it. hehe... Now one of the statments he made is correct, not all of them as he only tells the truth once a week. So, he has to tell the truth one of these days, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday. OTherwise he will be telling 2 truths (of lying). So one of these 2 statments is right. So it is not a Thursday, Saturday or Sunday. (He is lying). It is some other day. I am stuck here at the moment hehe.
freedom2012 · Mar 5, 2013 3:06 PM
It could not be a Friday that day he lied about the days, because a day before would be Thursday when he made the statement "i lie on mondays and tuesday" and Thursday is not an option. So take out Friday....we have Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. :) (Hope i am getting there)
freedom2012 · Mar 5, 2013 3:17 PM
So technically Monday he is saying "i lie on monday and on tuesdays" Tuesday he saying " today is either thursday, saturday or sunday" (which is a lie) And on wednesday he is saying " i lie on wednesday and friday" So take out Tuesday, we have monday and wednesday.

freedom2012 · Mar 6, 2013 1:20 AM
She is a photographer. But really, you wouldn't say "holds him underwater," more like holds IT underwater. Here's one: Inside a dark room, there's a table with 50 coins. 9 of the coins have HEADS facing top and rest (41) have TAILS. Your task is to separate the coins into two groups, each group with equal number of heads. You can't see the coins (it's dark) and can feel them but you can't tell if it's head or tail just by the touch.

A monk has a very specific ritual for climbing up the steps to the temple. First he climbs up to the middle step and meditates for 1 minute. Then he climbs up 8 steps and faces east until he hears a bird singing. Then he walks down 12 steps and picks up a pebble. He takes one step up and tosses the pebble over his left shoulder. Now, he walks up the remaining steps three at a time which only takes him 9 paces. How many steps are there?
bshal · Mar 6, 2013 12:31 PM
@funtush You're right; but that was a mistake of wordings not intent. When you say you want Heads or Tails, you don't need to say facing up or down..hence I went along with common terminology. Fine, let's just say I said heads facing up: Inside a dark room, there's a table with 50 coins. 9 of the coins have HEADS facing top and rest (41) have TAILS. Your task is to separate the coins into two groups, each group with equal number of heads (facing up). You can't see the coins (it's dark)but can feel them but you can't tell if it's head or tail just by the touch.

freedom2012 · Mar 6, 2013 12:40 PM
@Freedom, 28 is wrong....sorry.... could you explain your which day he tell the truth riddle. :) Here it is: He tells the truth on Tuesdays. Take them one at a time and assume he is telling the truth on each of the three days that he makes a statement. Then assume he is not telling the truth on any of the days that he makes a statement. The only case that works is the one where he is telling the truth on the third day. On that third day, from the statements he made, he lies on Wednesdays and Fridays. He tells the truth on Mondays and Tuesdays. Yesterday was not Thursday, Saturday or Sunday. That means that he couldn't be telling the truth Monday because yesterday can't be Sunday and therefore, he must tell the truth on Tuesdays.

I knew paddle and lace were distraction and thought the bottle was empty as nothing was said about it. So I was going to suggest squeezing the bottle real hard and then covering the lip of the pipe with bottle's top (since it doesn't fit, it won't go in) then release the bottle slightly so that a suction is created. This will then suck the ball up, whoala. Then, I copy pasted the question and found the answer.

You are in a closed room with no object made of metal, not even in your clothing. You are given two iron rods, one of them is magnetic the other is not. How can you tell which one is magnetic? Easy answer to this question is to suspend both the rods and see which aligns one particular way all the time. Say the guy who locked you up, realized this. He also took away anything that you can suspend the rods with. Now, how do you find which rod is magnetic?
Kiddo · Mar 6, 2013 3:05 PM
@kiddo, Take one rod and touch with its end the middle of the second rod. If they get closer, then you have a magnet in your hand. The real magnet will have a magnetic field at its poles, but not at its center. So, if you take the iron bar and touch its tip to the magnet's center, the iron bar will not be attracted. Here is mine again: Suppose you're in a hallway lined with 100 closed lockers. You begin by opening every locker. THen you close every second locker. Then you go to every third locker and open it (if it's closed) or close it (if it's open). Lets call this action toggling a locker. Continue toggling every nth locker on pass number n. After 100 passes, where you toggle only locker #100, how many lockers are open?

Let me preface the answer with an honest confession. I had heard that riddle and the solution before (but for some reason had to think really hard to figure it out today), and today while trying to figure it out again, I got help from a couple other people on sajha chat. Divide the coins into two groups. Group 1 has 9 coins, Group 2 has 41 coins The number of heads in Group 1 : say, "a". The number of heads in group 2: 9-a (because we had nine heads to begin with) Flip all the coins in Group 1. You have 9-a heads in Group 1 now. No. of heads in Group 1 = Number of heads in Group 2 = 9-a. Last edited: 06-Mar-13 03:48 PM

A father and daughter were talking in the living room. The father was saying, "You arrived very late. It was 3 in the morning. We were so anxious and worried about you." The daughter replied, "Dont worry father, i can never do that again." And they both laughed. What were they talking about?.
freedom2012 · Mar 6, 2013 7:15 PM
She was born at 3 in the morning?
durbarmargnepal · Mar 6, 2013 7:18 PM
Correct, they were talking about her birth!. Another one. One lady had 3 children (all boys). One day she went to ghum ko mela and lost 2 of the boys in the crowd. The 2 other boys were picked up by another couple and raised to be bright young men. So one day these 2 brothers were walking downtown when the real mother spotted them. Instantly she recognised them. She exclaimed "These are my boys!". How did she know?.

some more riddles... 1) And then Bertha came to my town and killed a dozen people. But Bertha did not go to jail for that. How come?. 2) There is a party going on and there are 100 people there. There are 50 short people and 50 tall people. But each person will only shake hands with the one shorter than him. And all the 100 people are of different heights. So how many handshakes will there be?.
freedom2012 · Mar 7, 2013 12:44 AM
Guessing without googling: 1) Bertha was a hurricane. 2) 0 (A will only shake hands with B if B is shorter than A. But then B will not shake hands with A since A is not shorter than B).

durbarmarg is smart lol Another one: A woman goes into a hardware store to buy something for her house. When asked the price, the clerk replies, "The price of one is twelve cents, the price of forty-four is twenty-four cents, and the price a hundred and forty-four is thirty-six cents. What does the woman want to buy? ( This is easy so here's another one too). 2) During WWII, there was a bridge connecting Germany and Switzerland and on the German side there was a sentry tower with a guard in it. He would come out every three minutes to check on the bridge and he had orders to turn back anyone who tried to get into Germany and shoot anyone trying to escape without a pass. There was a woman who desperately needed to get into Switzerland and she knew she didn't have time to get a pass. It would take her at least six minutes to cross the bridge but she managed to do it. How?
bshal · Mar 7, 2013 11:59 AM
2) She goes to the bridge when the guard is away. When the guard comes back after 3 minutes, she then proceeds back towards Germany, as if she is trying to come to Germany from Switzerland. The guard then promptly turns her "back" to Switzerland.
Kiddo · Mar 7, 2013 12:21 PM
1) As a woman, I should not be making these jokes, but couldn't resist it. Who let her out of the kitchen in the first place is the riddle! 2) She walked towards Germany. On the third minute, when the guard appeared, she turned around, (making it seem like she was walking to Switzerland), and once the guard was gone, she turned around again, and walked towards Germany.

Let me take a stab at wordplay (a poor one though). Noone lived in that house recently, i.e, whoever went there, didn't live, they died. He found dead bodies in the bathroom. haha
durbarmargnepal · Mar 7, 2013 1:51 PM
1) When I leave my house for a long vacation, I don't take the shower curtains out. Having one or not having one is hardly any indication of occupancy of the house. 2) Most of the magazines in my toilet are old. Nobody reads them. 3) This is a good one. But it could be that the water service was cut this morning; or there was a disruption in the service like in Nepal. Keep it coming. Again, the question was: A detective shows up to a house, location of a murder that took place that morning. He proceeds to the bathroom and comes out after a minute. "Nobody lived in this house recently." He boldly claims. How did he know? (hint: Give up searching, You won't find it in google)

I found similar one: One day, a king and queen were watching the jester act like an idiot in their beautiful, round castle. In their castle, they had a maid, a cook, a jester, and a servant. The king and queen went to bed that night. The king woke up in the morning and the queen was dead. Somebody killed her. The king called a detective to town. The detective asked the maid what she was doing while the murder took place. She said she was sweeping the corners. Then he asked the cook. He said he was sharpening his knife collection. He asked the jester and he said he was watching Jersey Shore. Lastly, he asked the servant. The servant said he was too busy preparing the sofa for the next day. Who was it?

Kiddo · Mar 7, 2013 2:04 PM
@bshal Not bad. The owner could have gone out yesterday and came back to get something? Doesn't mean it was unoccupied for a while. Actually, I will give you a point. I guess this question will have too many possibilities, so let me do the reveal.... ..drum roll..... The detective turned the tap on. For few seconds he could hear gas coming out, making whistling noise. It was then followed by stream of water coming out all at once. The bathroom was thus not used in a while and he deduced that the house was not occupied. (Now don't tell me the owner preferred taking a leak outside his house. ;).

Some simple riddles.... 1)How long can one run into the woods? 2)A man forgot and left a hundred dollar bill on the table but when he returned, it was gone. He asked the cook there if he had seen the money. The cook replied that he saw the money on the floor and picked it up and put a book on top of it. The man looked under the book but the money was not there. Then he asked the waiter. The waiter said that to make it safer, he had put the money between pages 45 and 46. There was a beautiful princess named Anna. Anna's father, the King, wanted to be sure his daughter married an intelligent man. To test his daughter's suitors the King hid Anna's picture in one of three boxes. The suitor had to be able to select the box with Anna's picture on one try and within twenty seconds. On the gold box was the message "Anna's picture is in this box". The silver box had the message "Anna's picture is not in this box." "Anna's picture is not in the gold box" was written on the bronze box. The King would tell each suitor "Only one of the three messages is correct." Which box contained Anna's picture?
freedom2012 · Mar 8, 2013 11:25 PM
silver theory of elimination only one is true and lets assume message in the bronze box is true = pic not in gold box. rest is false meaning: gold: pic in gold box = false (satisfied) silver: pic is not in this box = false (satisfied) it satisfies all the cndition. Therefore pic is in silver box. If we apply same logis to rest, it contradicts.
