It was another episode of lavish marriage which many Nepalese can only dream. Millions of Nepalese are dying of hunger while the chief of army is able to celebrate his daughter's wedding in a grand style. Pyar Jung Thapa's daughter was able to make it big, thanks to her father's success in the country.
How is it possible for an army chief to have such a grand wedding? To read more

hey pandit it was not jealousy understand. it was his concern to raise this public matter. cause everyone in a country has the right to know how much our army chief is spending while the people who were shot dead or the brutal attack on people, while there family was being raped and there relatives were being killed for fun, it is the public matter cause its not royal now its people's.

And he should not have organised such a lavish kind of marriage in a country where being doctor is a social status, and why girija is PM?

Girija would be the one who is gonna save gyane. my predictment on politics. just a guess

I don't see anything wrong with having a lavish wedding ceremony....It may be extravagant from an average Nepali standard, but it's nothing unusual either......Pyar Jung Thapa's daughter's wedding is blown out of proportion just because he happens to be the Army Chief of Nepal who we love to hate... And when we hate someone, we don't like to give other possibilities a thought and love to come to the easy conclusion that makes us happy... If it was some other rich person getting his daughter married that way, I bet we wouldn't have made "millions of Nepalese are dyiing of hunger" a big deal...
Pyar Jung Thapa may have been corrupt and what not, but we cannot ruin his or his daughter's happiness just on the basis of some of our *feel good* assumptions.... Until his fallacies are proved, let's not forget to give the probablity a consideration that he may have inherited incredible amount of properties from his forefathers like many other Nepalese do....

OOPS!! Almost forgot to congratulate the newly wed couple....I wish them a happy married life..... God bless!!!

It is very sad to hear such story in newspaper that Pyara Jung thapa, chief of army, with mere 20 -30 thousand per month salary can enjoy doing such extravagant expensed in his daughter's wedding. What will foreigners say about it? will they think twice given the status of being one of the poorest countries of the world.
40,000 people are his guest to serve, and 4 hunderd Jantis from India, bridegroom's side are being served in Five star hotel which is cost at 250 t0 500 dollar per suite. Many vips are accompanying the bridegroom's janti. Forget the cost of air transportation cost (jet airways), and breakfast, lunch, etc. 2000 army jawans were being deployed to furnish the bride's house. It is estimated that 8 to 13 crore are being spent on this wedding, far more than that of King birendra's and Gyanendra's.

who's money is that anyway? state's money, poor people's money. you can easily imagine the extent of corruption being done in army side. Because the state cant inquire about the army on the corruption charges, such tendency of expenses in marriage is going on by the government bureaucrats. It is really shame that where many poor people of this country r unable to feed the children simple bread and butter , dal and bhat, the army head is doing futile expense for the sake of showness and swaggering. Instead these money should be spend on development and poor people.

It is not just an issue of lavish wedding that is bothering people. It is the timing, the volume and the indifference shown towards current Nepali situation. Well his daughter might deserve all the happiness in the world but what about vexing other bystanders as well as insiders. Pyarajung also had other daughters whose marriage was a mediocre and at that time he was a high ranking official (so he had access to all the amenities within army). But the fact that he was only able to afford such a pompous marriage only after being army chief for almost 4+ years proves the fact about the source of his expenditure (his inherited money.....ask anyone who is in the system and he will tell you how corrupt this guy is).
Having such a lavish show off in between such a turmoil is trying to make a statement that "I simply don't care" (that too even when he was under probe as other three chiefs). Wouldn't it have been nice if he had simply resigned from the post in the ground of morality (his tenure has already expired one year ago, he was put for one additional year by the king) rather than have a secret conversation with Girija. If he had resigned and then performed the lavish ceremony, few people would have objection.

mokshya & others,

I forgot to add other parts of the news. It is not just about lavish wedding. If you had read the whole news piece in the link, you would not have made such comments. I am not concerned with the wedding they had, but I have serious questions as to how a security chief who earns so less in Nepal is able to afford such a wedding. Investigations...need to be done...
Another important thing : why should the security people work for his daughter's wedding? Are the security people his slaves? Did he pay for their service? Will the security people provide security if we have our wedding? A BIG "NO" right?
So, read the news a little bit more in detail...you will be able to comment then.

I think Harkey and Bibas100 have a good point.. It would be good to investigate how he could afford such a thing and how he could use the army (paid by the government) as his slaves....

First of all
Congratulations to a wonderful, sweet person whom I had the pleasure of meeting very briefly!!

Now..the fact that she got married with her father's money and what you all claim to be is ill-earned.
I have always wondered how everybody else gets married in Kathmandu in such pompous ways!
Apparently the newars have this chalan of saipatta (excuse my mis-spelt english and roman english) where dignity lies in how many plates are exchanged between the grooms family and the bride's. How can anybody afford that? How can anybody afford the countless tolas of gold, the cars, the dahej (oops I don't think its called that!) blah blah blah. Aren't you people a little bit ashamed of pointing fingers here, call up your families and ask how they do it..or how they are planning to feed 1000 people AND keep everybody satisfied - that is YOU included - malai yetti suun ley pugdaina...mero bihey yaha garna parcha...tyaha garna parcha etc etc etc!
I don't think its easy for any parent to get their children married off - sano lai sano kai peer, thulo lai thulo ko peer.
So he immobilized a percentage of the army - hve you thought of the countless threats he may have received in the past - I would immobilize the whole country if the life of my children was in danger!
I don't know the father, what do I care....but people, aren't you being totally irrational and green?
Afno dhaad ma hatti dekhdaina...arka ko dhaad ma jumra dekhney haru.

well suna now please suna....dont worry bout ur spelin...only fools takes notice of things & complain....about marriage the point is not about the 'lavish party' itself....it is about' arrogance'& 'ignorance'......if pyara waz dignified human being he wuld have thought twice or even simplified some things of tis ceremony.....do u personally believe that the money spent in this marriage is all clean...........& was it right to stop the trafic for his personal matter.....i think pyara has made 'fool' of himself in the eyes of 'civililized ' world.....

Yes, I do agree with you guys saying that “ army chief holding his daughter’s wedding ceremoniously at the time when the Nepal’s state is in critical state, but more importantly chief and army himself”. This point really needs to be considered by all Nepalese alike. What is going on in Pyara bro’s mind, we do not know? Even the govern…. has initiated the action against him and has been referred to security council for the required action. Really I smell a rat at this juncture. After the king becoming absolutely powerless, he should have shown the honesty, integrity, transparency towards the poor people and others alike.

What has the maobadi been thinking on this? Will they not get point to get support from all walks of life in the would-be election. If necessary action is not taken on time and inevitable procedures not initiated to bring the army under parliamentarian, these inglorious leaders will soon loose the battle with Maoists in the coming days.

May be army is thinking of mutiny since It is also said chief had talk with PM GP koirala and especially about the government action against him and other army officers. Who knows what will happen in the coming days because anything can happen anytime in Nepal as to the recent turmoil the country is facing.

SUNA--what do you mean by your saying? C'moon. come down to earth and think as yourself as one poor nepali. you cant put others in the same line of Army head. If he would have been big business man like Laxmi mittal we wouldn't point fingers at him. But being the in the service of people and sustaing from the salt of poor people, he shoundnt have gone is such a lavish style.

Even the late princess Shruti's wedding didnt cost so much.. And about him being the army chief and stuff... well. he earns 40,000 rs a month.. MAX. I mean there are so many people in Sajha whose parents earn that much money but do they have such elaborate weddings? It is not about jealousy. I wouldn't be jealous if Bill Gates spent 5 Billion dollars for his son's wedding or whatever because it was his money and we know that he can afford it.

ANd like you (i.e. SANU) said, every one wants to safeguard their kids.. So does that mean that everyone ask for army's patrolling and bodyguarding and stopping for 5 minutes? ANd will everyone get such privilege? He is just an armyman. Even according to the old useless constitution, he is under the LAW unlike the king!!! SO WHY THE HECK DOES HE USE SO MANY ARMY MEN FOR HIS WEDDING WHEN THEY ARE PAID BY EVERY TAX PAYING NEPALI CITIZEN...

AND STOPPING THE TRAFFIC FOR 5 MINUTES IS ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS!! AS IF HE IS A RANA PRIMEMINISTER!!!!

I don;t see any reason to be jealous of his success or anything.. I would be very ashamed of myself if I were him!

Furthermore, regarding all this saipatta and dahej, I don't support it. I think it is bull crap and people should stop it. And I partially blame society because dahej = social status eve n though the family of the girl is in shitloads of debt!!! And sons should not be "paisa kamaune bhando!"

I am shocked how people still cannot see the difference...I am pissed off at this guy's treatment of security people as his slaves..as if they are to do what he orders even if that be for personal gain...He can't freaking use our security people..
he has to pay for the security and even then he has to get the consent from each individual...

" why should the security people work for his daughter's wedding? Are the security people his slaves? Did he pay for their service? Will the security people provide security if we have our wedding"?

It's not just for Pyar Jung, such helpers are given to other higher ranking army officials too...... In fact once you take the post of Major(i am not sure about lower ranks), you can always keep one at your home as a servant.. I'm not saying it's right... In fact, I hate to see a government server working for some people's private cause... But he is certainly not the first one to do it... Many have done it before him and if not stopped many will continue to do it......

If we look at him as a Chief of Army, it may be difficult for us to accept his behavior, but as a father, his gesture to give his daughter all the happiness that he can should be appreciated.... As much as we would love to think, nothing has changed much after the demonstrations and protests... People are the same and their dreams concerning their beloveds are the same... If a father wanted to give his daughter all the happiness of the world, no time is "wrong time" for him.... As i said earlier, as long as his misdoings are proved, *good wishes* are all that i have for him....

Mokshya,
oh really?
Who was the other top army official whose daughter's wedding commanded more than 150 security people? This is absolutely wrong and Pyar Jung must be held responsible. Someone did it before does not mean he should do it. Back in Sept 11,2001, someone bombed twin towers? Should you do it now? Back in old days, Rana's used to keep dozens of people just like slaves...should they do it now? Your logic is flawed darling...

Moreover, who is denying the act of a father to make her daughter a big one. But, given your assumption that making the wedding big makes one happy, I feel sorry for you mokshya. All the happiness of the world?

Mokshya, I only hope my wife will not be like you...finding all the happiness in the freaking wedding...this makes me sick...
