No voices were raised against 'Nepal being a Hindu country ' in any of the peoples movement in Nepal. Then why these bloody politicians decides to amend the constitution to make Nepal a secular state? I am pretty much sure if people were informed that the Jan Andolan would make the country a secular one, the streets of Kathmandu would not have been flooded with people during the Aandolan..
Politicians talk of respecting people's voice. They then do not have the right to amend the constitution to make a decision on the matter that was not voiced by people. There was nothing wrong with Nepal as Hindu country...If we want to change this, there should be referendum for that. Bloody politicians, killers do not deserve any right to decide against people's aspiration.
Hinduism basically is not the religion, its a culture. It respects all religions...we never had any religious dispute in the country. When things were going smoothly with that whywas the need for change?

Well, people of every other religion have claimed the very similar view about their religion. Muslims have made similar claims, so have Christains, Buddhists, and so on...

What is wrong in Nepal being secular ??? It definately doesnot mean we are having to change our religion, our way of life but it definately means we respect all the nepali citizens of differnet faiths irrepective of their population size. It seems more than us, hardcore hindus from India are more worried about Nepal of not being a Hindu Kingdom. If those Indians, being the second most populous in the world, couldnot make their own country Hindu, how do they expect to force us.

Above that, another bitter truth, Hinduism is a religion that creeped to Nepal all the way from India. It would have made some sense if people had pressed to make Nepal a Buddhist country, which is our own, which gives us some identity, dignity in the whole world, the religion that was born in our own motherland. But I still go for secular Nepal for the respect of my brothers and sisters of other faiths.

Nepal should remain secular. This is a need of our time. If not, those fundamentalist will use as a way to control politics, governments and lives of other janjatis. Making Nepal secular wipes out any chances for those fundamentalists to take advantage of others like they have done for the last 200 years.

Making nepal secular is a very serious issue and should have been decided by referrendum rather than few brainless politician. Look what they have done now. there are clashes between different peoples of differnt religions.

They should have let people decide on this very critical issues.

bidhan,

It had to happen once anyway, it's only now or later. If you retain word Hindu in Nepal, it will be like hiding ur skeletons in closet, it is nothing better than buying time. I strongly believe nepalese are not that serious about these religion that they will come out on streets for this mere issue. Why do we bow to the demands of Indians ??? They are there to instigate the violence, once it flares up they will be gone leaving the cause for nepalese to fight and die for. We should act cautiously.

Personally i don't care it Nepal is a Hindu country or a secular country as long as everyone has freedom of religion.

BTW buddhism did not born in nepal it was in india. Buddha was born in nepal not buddhism. i think Kiratis were the earlier inhabitants but i am not great in history so please correct

.
lets be clear

we all know that if it came down to a nationwide referendum, nepal would certainly remain a 'hindu country'. although im pretty sure the actual numbers would shock those who would believe that 90% of nepal is hindu

however, democracy is as much about the protection of the rights of the minority as it is about the rule of the majority. and saying that we are a hindu country means we are according all non-hindu citizens a second class status

why should they have to suffer this indignity?

In my view there should be no religion. It was probably something important for ppl 2000 yrs ago. but now it only causes hate and separates people.

I would go for atheism, humanism and socialism

it does make some sense, Stealth. In broader picture religion has always been cause of wars and hatred.

Well i have a buddist friend and who said nepal should remain hindu because accoring to him when we touch the issue of religion it will only bring chaos. So if we go by his statement , even minority may be in favor of hinduism. I still belive when it comes to major issue it is the people who should decide not by a governemnt who havent even been in election for last 6-7 years and we actually dont know if they have mandate of people.

All these decision should have beentaken after election. The parties should have forwarded its proposal before election to people and if the people would liked that they would win election and act accordingly.

I agree, Bidhan. If this issue had not been raised, no one would have cared if Hinduism remained a national region. But since the issue have been raised, no matter whoever might have raised it, now its good to abolish hinduism as national religion bcoz if people start demonstrating and acting voilent for restoration of status .... What message will it send to the people of other faith ??? even Biddhism ....... If they can tolerate hinduism being there this long, why can't hindus tolerate hinduism not being national religion ...... after it is not being replaced by any other religion ....... they are simply trying to treat all religion equal.
