DEAR FRIENDS ,

WE FEEL THAT STAYING AWAY FROM HOME WE SHOULD DO WHATEVER WE CAN IN SAVING OUR NATION from foreign bullies. WE HAVE BEEN THINKING OF FILING A PETITION IN INDIAN EMBASSY, CHINESE EMBASSY AND THE UN AGAINST INDIA FOR SHELTERING THE MAOIST Guerrilla . India should know that we Nepales are not like what we were in the yesteryears and we will not let anything India wants to happen to our Nepal. India put Pakistan's name in UN and tried its best to declare Pakistan as terroist country. What about us going to DC and handling the petition telling India not to cause terrorism in our country, telling them to stop providing security, shelter and financial and ammuntion help to maoists? do write to us about your views. What can we do here to contribute to our national stability besides that?

Same old Nepali thought process. Naive people who think more from their heart and past "glory" as opposed to with their brain and confronting today's reality. Guys, think outside the box a little bit. The issue is not India; the issue is power and spheres of influence. India or whoever will always act out of self interest, because it is an inherent nature in people and a country is composed of people. The whole is not separate from the parts. The US manipulates many countries. In-fact the American influence over UN decision making power has been well documented over the years. The struggle over the Haves and the Have nots is classic human evolutionary paradigm. If you look at things at a microcosmic level, you will see that individuals and societies are confronted with the same challenges regarding power distribution, struggle to survive and compete. In your work field, you will have to impress your seniors and flatter them to move up, to get good jobs you will have to know people; to push policy forward you will have to know people, but in the long run there has to be a sense of unity in philosophy and synergy for a nation to progress. India took advantage of the infrastructure built by the Brits, and the atrocities they experienced during their colonial era fueled their fire to develop, in- fact it still fuels them. Nepal instead was too geographically inconvenient for the Brits to have any economic benefits so they accepted defeat without much resistance. We take pride in this, but in reality our false pride and sense of security has been our undoing. A nation is transcended by its leaders and politicians. They have failed at a very basic ideological level of navigating the country with a sense of camaraderie and nationalism in spite of political differences. The governing bodies’ agendas were more about personal incentives and rewards as opposed to the well being of the masses. This corrupt vision encompassed by a ruthless, incomprehensible autocratic feudal monarchy that coerced the masses into worshiping it as a demigod and apparently standing ready in hindsight to take over the country is what has facilitated the disintegration of Nepal. This "thuggish" approach to governing has trickled down on the general public and no one in Nepal wants to be there anymore. Nepal is not a puppet to India and if it is, that has more to do with its weaknesses rather than India's strengths. Until today, there are no signs of how those weaknesses will be addressed, how stability will be brought about, how 70 something year old men will come to a compromise and look beyond their petty personal differences and "filling my pocket" attitudes. Nepal couldn't strengthen itself because it doesn't understand the basics of capitalism and has no intellectual capacity at the governing level to negotiate things to bring it to its favor and create economic advantage. Physically it is at an economic disadvantage, but their is a serious deprivation in intellectual property in Nepal. Thus don't blame India, blame yourself and human Nature.

Hey M5, I respect your sentiment but it's time to say enough is enough!!

Sure we would like to think "outside the box" and I would even like to argue that we have in the past. If if you are talking about US manupulation around the world, I don't think the general people of these country are quite. They have taken extreme measure and we you can find example of all over the middle east, africa, and starting to see some in latin america.

Since we Nepalis like to consider ourselves peace loving modest people....we didn't speak anything against india when it sent well over 100,000 bhutanese into Nepal but will NOT let anyone of these go back to their country using indian land. We never said anything about india building water dams that has flooded many of our villages and have had adverse effect on our countrymen living in those area. We have never said anything about our children and women who are taking for modren day version of human slavery in the form of sex trafficing into india. Nor have we said anything against india eating up numerous of our waterways and eying for more hydro resources. These examples are just to name a few....

I hate to say this but india is taking full advantage of nepalis like you....india has lead you into believing that the problem is and will always lie among us, so that we won't even have time to think or let alone voice against their exploitation. First the Ranas were the problem, so then came king Mahendra, then Monarchy was the problem, then came great leader like BP Koirala, then he was a problem, then came Pyanchyat again, then king Birendra and Pyanchyat became problem, then came democracy, then after it became a problem, then came Maoists, then Gayendra and now he is the problem, so who is the next problem?? While we Nepalis have always had problem with this and that....india has never had any problem to have it's way with Nepal.

Time to think brothers and sisters....time to move forward not going around and around in the same india created web circle. ya fell me?

To KALP with love

Let me start off wit the meaning of HEGEMONY.
“Hegemony (pronounced hɪ'gem.ə.ni) (greek:ηγεμονία) is the dominance of one group over other groups, with or without the threat of force, to the extent that, for instance, the dominant party can dictate the terms of trade to its advantage; more broadly, cultural perspectives become skewed to favor the dominant group. Hegemony controls the ways that ideas become "naturalized" in a process that informs notions of common sense.”
(Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hegemony)

Make no mistake, not even once about the fact that we live in a world that is far-off from perfect. The principles that we are made to believe in are skewed. Right and wrong, good and bad, beauty and ugliness are all situational and reciprocal.

“WE FEEL THAT STAYING AWAY FROM HOME WE SHOULD DO WHATEVER WE CAN IN SAVING OUR NATION from foreign bullies. WE HAVE BEEN THINKING OF FILING A PETITION IN INDIAN EMBASSY, CHINESE EMBASSY AND THE UN AGAINST INDIA FOR SHELTERING THE MAOIST Guerrilla.”

Let us cleaning up after ourselves before throwing dirt at others. We created the mess and it is our responsibility to find the way out. It is a fact that India plays a vital part in our country’s policy, economics, politics and so on and so forth but I don’t agree on filing petition against India for harboring Maoists. I agree that India has never been the best of neighbors as it ought to be but how can we exclusively blame India for nurturing and harboring Maoists and what is the reasoning behind it?

Just take an example of US-Mexico boarder. You would assume that it is simple enough task for the US government to put a halt to the infiltration, but the reality is just opposite, right? Now, it is a different ball game altogether when you think of Indo-Nepal border, and especially when we look alike it is next to impossible to stop Maoists or for that matter any other Nepali at the border. When stopping somebody at the border is such a herculean task, let’s not even delve into nurturing and harboring and similar clichés by India.

The other problem with our government is that they don’t take Indian government as any other government but as their boss or something more than that. India will always try to act our big brother given the size and to be superpower tag attached to it. Let’s put some portion of the blame on our so called leaders who are always keen to kiss India’s ass for no reasons whatsoever and let’s take some on ourselves.

India itself is in the grasp of Maoism or Naxalites at least in some regions, few closer to Nepal as well. No doubt, India could have been much more aggressive against Maoists but didn’t want to take the brunt of Nepal’s’ mess reasons best known for India. It would be inane on our part to blame India for harboring Maoists. India’s indifference to Maoist problem in Nepal doesn’t essentially mean that India supported them. Make no mistake that anti king doesn’t necessarily mean one is Maoist.

“India should know that we Nepalese are not like what we were in the yesteryears and we will not let anything India wants to happen to our Nepal.”

Sounds good, real good, in fact revolutionary, if you are the one responding to the anti-India crowd, but in realism it doesn’t bear any significance. India is flying high, and with the soon to be superpower tag to its name, India is beyond our reach at least for now and our country, we are fighting amongst ourselves in the name of democracy. King is the unifying factor of the nation- do hell with king and other moronic leaders. The truth of the matter is that we don’t have even one single leader but the bunch of opportunists.

“India put Pakistan's name in UN and tried its best to declare Pakistan as terrorist country. What about us going to DC and handling the petition telling India not to cause terrorism in our country, telling them to stop providing security, shelter and financial and ammunition help to Maoists?”

Well, the comparisons of Nepal’s relationship with India cannot be correlated with India’s wrath against Pakistan or vise versa. In India’s case, it is Pakistanis’ who are infiltrating to India in the pretext of Kashmir’s freedom but in the case of Nepal, it is Nepali Maoists who are in India to delude the so called government of Nepal or get arms and ammunitions or medical treatments after getting wounded in the so called peoples’ war or for the reasons unknown to us coming back to Nepal.

No matter how hard we yell, curse or complain against India, the fact of the matter is India is a bitter truth for us, as long as Nepal exists. I identify with your frustration and wrath but does that change anything? Would our voice be heard? When our own government and leaders are incompetent, what is the point in voicing our anger to India or to any other country and especially when the fault lies in us?

Well, if you really want to do something, help some Nepali less unfortunate than yourself by whatever means you can, which could be by sponsoring the education of a poor girl or boy. Make sure that you can make some difference.

Last but not the least, there’s a saying- “complain to one who can help you”, in this case it is none other than LORD SHIVA himself.

Somphee,
lets make things simple for you.

why doesn't India want to participate in free trade policies with its neighbours?

why doesn't India allow an election within the kasmiris for separation or unification with India ?

Why india doesnt give a shit on bhutanese refugees?

Why does India want to stick with the old trade and transit treaty, which has always screwd Nepal.

And yes, writing on this forum is like complaining to Lord Shiva.

Every earnest thought is a prayer in itself!!!

Hukka, Mad Dog, I respect your genuine concern and love for Nepal. I am fully aware, and I am sure so are most Nepalis about how Indian policies have affected Nepal. But think about it, where does Nepal really have any absolute or comparative advantage to become an international trade player? What can Nepal sell? What are our resources?
1) Tourism- A no brainer. Nepal is one of the most beautiful if not the most beautiful country on the planet. Home to more than half of the highest peaks in the world, Nepal is a Shangri-La to foreigners. What happened to it? Tourism has been the hardest hit sector due to this decade long conflict and a musical chair type of multi party rule. Where and how can you blame India for this? If the government was really focused and had even an ounce of integrity or vision, Tourism alone could have been a driving force behind bringing Nepal out of the shadows of the "least developed" and into the mix of "emerging market countries." Let me tell you a sad reality of Nepal right now. I was in Kathmandu 3 months ago, visiting, and there were hardly any tourists there. Amongst the ones that were there, the majority was Indians.
2) Hydro-electric power- This is the most hyped and overvalued asset of Nepal. Before chanting its potential blissful rewards we should look at the pros and cons. Numero uno-It is extremely expensive to proceed with such an endeavor. Dams are very costly and a lot of external Project Finance companies have to take a gamble on this. Inputs like fixed costs are very high; variable costs can fluctuate even more. When you do a quick feasibility study of such projects, Return on Investments have too many variables attached to it, meaning a lot of Uncertainty. Nepal's Finance and Banking systems are not sophisticated enough in a way that local banks could partner along with foreign companies by leveraging and hedging away risks through issuance of debt or using financial derivatives. Numero dos- There are no "benchmark" examples of such projects and hydro-electricity production being a trend or being a first alternative to fossil fuels and radioactive metals. Brazil hasn't been notably successful at it. Canada uses it a lot, but it operates in a different economic environment, which brings us to the next point-Who is the buyer? India? They are not price takers and want to buy at a discount.
Point number four, even if Nepal was able to pull this off, there are environmental and stakeholder issues here. Toxic waste is a huge by-product of hydroelectric projects and dumping and the flow of waterways can destroy nearby land, its fertility and endanger the health of nearby villagers. There has not been enough innovation in this field to reduce externalities, financing and finding a market whether be it a niche or large scale is going to be difficult when a majority of our government is mainly concerned about power and don't even know how to read and write.
What else does Nepal possess as a major marketable asset? I can't really think of one, but if you guys can please pitch it to the forum.
Last but not least I think it is a little hypocritical to say we don't need India's help or interference and we are a sovereign proud nation when the majority of Nepalese in the blink of an eye are ready to flock to the US in droves, and the ones already here have no interest in going back.

I do not hate people who love their country but I do not love people who hate other country to prove they love their country that is hollow nationalism. nepali haters re? you mean to say i hate myself? baccha ho timi?
