I don't know about you guys but when I see average Nepali men in the United States in their 30s and up, they look too old for their age. Its probably a combination of bad eating habits, being lazy, watching too much TV and not working out or something. There are some who are fit, but I am talking in general. I think when Nepali men get married, have decent jobs and have kids, they just give up what they look like and start adding pounds and inches to their waistline. Do you guys care about how you look and do something not to look too old for your age?

When I see big pigging out on food, I ask myself .Arent people starving to death in parts of the world? None of my business ...its their choice but eating healthing is a must and should be implemented ...Ok, I am being mean here but consuming limited amount of food is beneficiary .to everyone ...in the long run..

the main problem with Nepalis havin BHUDIS is that our diet consists of huge amount of carbs.. Rice, Al u and what not..and when Nepalis come here..its like Beer and masu...and add no exercise to that...its worst than poison ..good diet doesnt always have to be bad tasting one..Ofcourse Green salad and baked chicken breast dont taste as good as Spicy wings or chips...but thats where sacrifice comes into play..Lots of fruits/veggies/water doesnt wonder to ur body..

Being a Nepali..I always crave for rice..but few years ...after my gorwing spurt stopped..I realised that I needed to cut down on carbs..when you are young and growing for most Nepalis..you can pretty much digest anything and look skinny..but once you hit that age..whatever junk you eat goes right into butt cheeks, bells...and face( I hate face part lol)...so I switched to BROWN rice..kinda hard to start but you know once you get used to it..it taste all good..not bad at all.....and its healthy compared to lighter ones...

never tried yoga ...but I would like to join..soon...I mean ..heard it does wonders to ur body..

casey-you are one of the few who seemed to realize it and doing something about it. I am trying hard to be on a similar boat. I know its very hard and requires discipline. When you get home from work, its hard to go to work out, you just have to push yourself. After you reach 30, everything is downhill, your metaboism slows down, and risks of disease grows, therefore, its even more important to do something about it. Its even better if you start early in age.

Next things is diet. Avoiding whites or in moderation (white rice, flour, sugar, potato) is a good thing i read somewhere. There are tons and tons of resources out there.

and oh yes, adding fat to your face, its next to impossible to get rid of, and pretty soon you'll be shopping for suspenders to hold your pants.

Ya,

For those people who dread goign to the gyms or lifting weights..there are many alternatives.

For eg.,

-- Do something that you like...take a walk, swim, play some kind of sports, dont drive for grocery( if thats possible)...

--Dieting to lose weight is temporary..stats have proven that MOST of them eventually gain it back..so balance diet is the KEY..

40% Protein, 40% carbs and 20% fat is what I usually go for. ALWAYS READ the LABELS when you buy something... Its all to spoil yourself y eating a cheese cake...but make you sure you get good source of protein ..ther other day.. I used to take Protein shakes a while go since I realised I didnt have enough protein intake but heard way too much consumption of protein tires ur kidney..anyway balance is the KEY..

Ya BEdrock,

Once the metabolism goes down...everything is screwed up..You have to concious..and all...
btw, what do you all eat during the day?

for me:

Breakfast:
--2 slices of wheat bread with omelette of 2 eggs(one yolk only)
--calcium enriched juice OR milk

Lunch:
usually sandwich or ..noodles..with veggies...

Dinner( this is the worst part)
-- Rice and nepali style khana...well I am not supposed to do this...but again I eat dinner really early..around ...7..so that I have good 4-5 hours break before I go to bed....and if I do get hungry before I go to bed..I go for fruits and lots of water..

anyway...add few cups of coffee/tea/diet sodas to this..

Bedrock, I do yoga, have been doing so for the last 4 years, but this year more seriously. And no, I haven't turned into a frying pan or a dead steak yet!
Benefits personally:
-Breathing improves, concentration and focus enhanced (usually..... if not always!)
-flexibility and stamina increases
-muscle toning without the bulging
-Quicker to heal from colds, sinus infections (the poses relax the muscles and the membranes to drain toxic substance from the sinuses)
-flexibility helps cells sustain their life span thus reducing aging, memory loss, imbalance and other bodily degeneration.

Recently: Although my car crash was so severe, I did not bruise or break a bone.... because, according to my doctor, since I was used to contorting my body, the jarring from the car did not cause much damage despite it rolling over 3 times.

toher than that, I agree with Casey: Minding Eating habits and goings for walks everyday does keep one young.

LOL
sabai nepali haru le yo song mann parauchhan ani kata bata hunu ni slim ra sexy ta?

Artist: Fast Food Rockers
Song: The Fast Food Song

Lyrics:

Can I take your order please?

Let's eat to the beat

(Chorus)
A pizza hut a pizza hut
Kentucky fried chicken and a pizza hut
A pizza hut a pizza hut
Kentucky fried chicken and a pizza hut
McDonalds McDonalds
Kentucky fried chicken and a pizza hut
McDonalds McDonalds
Kentucky fried chicken and a pizza hut

You like it you love it
You know you really want it
The voices I hear
Whenever you're around

I want it I need it
Nothing else can beat it
Hot and spicy
Whenever I'm in town (mm mm)

Enticing exciting
Aroma so inviting
And when it hits
Me, I wanna take you home

Trust me you must see
Just what you're doing to me
Driving me crazy
Hungry to the bone

I think of you and lick my lips
You've got the taste I can't resist
Can't resist - can't resist
Let's eat to the beat

(Repeat Chorus)

Would you like that to go?

Any sauces?

You're so sweet and you're neat
You knock me off my two feet
You're chunky and hunky
I'm coming back for more (Hot Dog)

Your taste all embraces
I gotta sing your praises
Just savour the flavours
Waiting at your door

I think of you and lick my lips
You've got the taste I can't resist
Can't resist - can't resist
Let's eat to the beat

(Repeat Chorus)

Does anyone fancy a shake?
Shake
Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh
Shake it to the left - Shake it to the right - Let's shake
Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh

I think of you and lick my lips
You've got the taste I can't resist
Can't resist - can't resist
Let's eat to the beat

(Repeat Chorus)

Thanks Sitara. Really I know how beneficial yoga is, but its so hard to stick to it. I had tried following a yoga book but Day 17 was the furthest i got to. I tried several times but for a week or two and discontinue. But during the period I was doing yoga, I felt so much better: getting toned (not stoned); very good sleep at night, remain altert and fresh during the day, good regularity (you know what I mean). I hope to continue it someday.

And, I hope you didn't interpret "frying pan" wrongly; I was refering to confused bro's comment "she looks sizzling" frying pan = sizzling hot :)

It is kind of frustrating that all the good things to taste are bad for health, like butter, cream, spices and many others. As Casey said, it is not a bad idea to check for labels while doing a grocery, it is equally important that you do not deprive yourself from something you really enjoy. For me the key part to being in shape and being healthy is being active whether its a workout or just a casual walk, and also watching the proportion of what we eat. I believe that you can eat fatty foods and still be in good shape, if the proportion is right. If you eat like a hog, like many americans do, you are sure to put on weight. Food for many europeans, like French, Italians, is a big part of their culture and they enjoy it a lot. Their food consists of things that we consider bad, like cheese, bread, pasta, chocolate, but still they are in much better shape that others, because they know the right amount. So I believe that you can still eat all the good tasting food and still be in shape if eat the right proportion.

Ya, I agree with Gham Pani on that proportion thing. Everything Americans eat are supersized...Look at the XLarger drink from McDonalds...its pretty big right..I mean bad things are always cheaper by the dozen!! And thats where we fail...We go to grocery and 24 cans of coke are darn cheap even though you dont want that much...But before you know everything is gone..Capis!!..

It would be hard for some people to resist the temptation..some people are strong and some arent but the main thing is control...Also, for those starters who want to have better eating habit..I suggest you guys to split your total intake in 5 different meals...and you eat through out the day...that way the body is constantly working to process the food..huge portion of food at once will release only limited energy and rest will be converted to Fat as our body is naturally programmed to gain fat...

Btw, I have been been a Vegeterian for almost 2 years now..I feel great..I used to be a little Cub back then..just crazy about meat...but if someone wants try being Veg then I give them two thumbs up..you just feel awesome and morally its very satisfying...I would someday like to be Vegan...but its a daunting task..we will see what happens.

Damn Casey- How did you manage to become vegeterian from a little Cub. Seems like you have a very good mind control there. But how do you manage to get daily protein intake without taking supplement? The day i try to be vegeterian, I get hungry like in two hours after the meal.

I am a food lover and have at least a couple of meals a week in a restaurant. But I have good habit of packing my own lunch for work, which includes fruits, yogurt, sandwich; nice home cooked meal during weekdays- white meat, fish, 2-3 scoops of rice, lots of veggie. Still I need to do more. Got to push it harder.

Like in US, we get everything in Large, SuperLarger, in Nepal we get everything in Half, half-plate Momo, half-plate sukuti. I guess that explains why Nepalese are so small or Americans are so big, or may be both.

Nice Topic!!

I think i have gained more than 5 pounds in these few months.. I love running but nowadays its so cold outside i have completely stopped. I don't feel good doing sit-ups and other exercises without warming up or doing some cardio exercise. So i've completely stopped working out. Is there any kind of warm-up exercise that you can do inside your house??

Bedrock, perhaps you can join a formal yoga center to keep the discipline? It really amazes me to see men and women in their 60 + years more stronger and flexible than I.

How Biz, how about an aerobics video?

Sitara- I live by the Swarthmore Hall in Grosvenor, and I was told that they have yoga class. I am thinking of joining it just to keep the discipliine like you said. I don't know yet.

Another fact is drinking Beer adds a lot of calorie to your system and its very hard to resist. I have made a new rule for myself: No touching alchohol on weekdays. Its been working so far for over 6 months :)
