RUDRA PANGENI

KATHMANDU: It was a bandh called by Brahmin-Chhetri Samaj on Friday morning, and Mega Bank CEO Anil Keshary Shah clad in traditional daura suruwal and bhadgaule topi was struggling to pass through Babarmahal in a journalist’s car with ‘PRESS’ sticker to participate in a programme.

On the way, he came across thousands of people bearing the brunt of bandh on the issue of federalism and came up with an innovative idea to press the political parties for timely drafting of the constitution. On his Facebook wall he wrote that he is proud of his ethnic heritage and “far more honored and privileged to be a son of NEPAL, my motherland.” He changed his Facebook name to Anil Keshary Nepal “till we get our Constitution promulgated” and urged his Facebook friends to join “me and change your fb last name to Nepal” for a united Nepal.

It did move some prominent Nepali figures. Journalist Gajendra Budhathoki replaced his surname with Nepali. Former BBC journalist Sushil Sharma wrote “I am Nepali” on his Facebook status, and asked others if they wanted to be known by their caste or just as a Nepali. He also gave a reference of a survey commissioned by a weekly magazine that claimed 74 per cent of people like to be called Nepali rather than be known by their surnames.

Among the users changing their last name are journalist Prateek Pradhan, pilot Bijaya Lama, entrepreneurs Binaya Lamichhane and Prashant Raj Karki. Vikram Upadhyaya, a Nepali student in Chicago, also expressed solidarity with the campaign.

“In order to support undivided Nepal and prove my indifference to the caste, creed and ethnicity, I have decided to (in response to Anil Nepal, CEO of Mega Bank) change my facebook identity until May 27th to Prateek Nepali,” Pradhan wrote on his wall.

Talking to this daily, Anil said, “The culture of disagreeing with others by means of bandh should be shunned for ever to unleash the potential of Nepali youth.”

He said the campaign was a humble protest against strikes and bandh.

Anil said he was not against federalism but the restructuring should be for the prosperity of Nepal.

Nothing is ever going to solve all problems, neither in US or in Nepal. But, keeping in mind all the ethnic disputes and unrest that is going on these days, it might be a long shot but changing last name to "Nepal" may set a good precedence.

Obviously it will most likely not have any impact but if a lot of Nepalis changes their last name to "nepal" in facebook, it sends a symbolic message.

The way you perceive this will depend upon your own individual personalities. Some people always love to bitch about everything and they will take this as another opportunity to bitch about it. Their bitching does not say anything about the matter of discussion, but only shows how bitter and dejected the person is and how they have give up all hope due to their own bitter personal experiences. But that does not necessarily mean that there aren't any other people who are willing to try out different things that doesn't hurt, to try to get our society in track with little things that they can do personally, people who care enough to still have hope in times of dire straits.

BathroomCoffee, not sure why, but I expected a better posting from you.

We don't have 24 hour electricity, neither access to clean water. Businesses cannot go 7 days without seeing a strike. Education system is in shambles and every other sector is struggling. We aren't getting a basic right that every citizen is entitled to.
But, this doesn't mean we cannot contribute in whatever way we can. Saying "Khana lai pani chhaina" and not doing anything will make it better? I cannot goto Nepal and fix all the problems; heck I cannot even go ask the Government to revise their aviation policy. Doesn't mean I should just stay here shut. What these guys are doing are symbolic and something to unite us.
In mere 10 years of time, different political parties (including Maoists) have been successful in creating a faction amongst various ethnic sub divisions.Symbolic gestures won't undo those damages, but it's a start. Its a subconscious effort to support one big ethnicity we all share: we all belong to Nepal.

If Sajha allowed last name, I would sign off as Kiddo Nepali.

If symbolic messages would help Nepal I would send a thousand messages a day.  If someone actually did something for the country like this http://sajha.com/sajha/html/index.cfm?threadid=97627 I would commend them.  Changing ur last name is nothing more than a Politicians talk to make himself or herself look nice.  I have no patience for asstalk like that.

Changing your name is like putting a mask on all the racist people in Nepal.  That is not actually going to solve the problem.  A newar is still going to look like a newar, a gurung is still going to look like a gurung, and a maitheli person is still going to look like a maithili.  It is not humanly possible to not be racist regardless of however politically correct you may be.  It is one of basic human nature.

But Mr I am nice and you are vile seems to think otherwise.

ha ha what a fking joke...like changing last name is going to help change anyone's mental incapability of not seeing beyond their ethnicity. yeah please learn from the exampels of maobadi leaders who deferred to not keeping their last name and changing to ridiculous nick names like prachanda and badal et al are the ones responsible for stirring the pot of ethnic division in Nepal.

I am totally with BC on this one. Symbolic messages are meaningless when people do not even have basic human needs beinf fulfilled and here we are talking about putting a lipstick on a pig. A racist will always be a racist no matter what name the person acquires. It's the mentality of division that needs to be conquered not put an over lapping layer or a symbolic name which doesn't help get rid of anything.

I have a friend. He doesn't donate to any charity because he says most of it goes to the CEO and employees of the Charity. He says, it is better to give some money to a random stranger.
I asked him when was the last time he did this. He couldn't remember.
He also doesn't give a dime to the pan handlers as he thinks they will waste that money in booze and grass. He says it is better to go to a adult care center and help the people in need.
I asked him when was the last time he went to an adult care center; he has never.

I have yet to see a day when he has helped anybody; but when anybody is about to help others, he sure is there saying how that's really not going to help.

Is giving a dime to the pan handler going to make him rich? No, it's not. Let's assume a majority of them also waste it on booze and getting high. But there still is a portion, no matter how small, who could use that dime. It sure is better than not giving it to him Or stopping people from doing it.

I have no problem with people who justify a way out of not doing something, it is your prerogative not to do it. But to make yourself feel better, don't come on trashing a legit cause. What's changing your name can do for Nepal? It won't be something concrete I can show to you. But subconsciously it will have some communal effect; may be, just maybe, a kid will understand that caste system is not really that important. Is it going to happen? More than likely not, but sure has a better chance of happening than you not doing anything and just mocking the process.

I said no to Kony. I am supporting this.

Why just criticize the changing of last name? Why not go to every charity and causes and tell them its not worth jack.
I am not sure why the outcry specially when it really isn't hurting anybody? Neither are they claiming that they are fixing all Nepal's problem by changing their last name temporarily.
seriously!

Kiddo very nicely said!

"I have yet to see a day when he has helped anybody; but when anybody is about to help others, he sure is there saying how that's really not going to help."

I have noticed a lot of people like that in sajha, who are self righteous and cast doubt and negativity towards everything under the sun as if they are parasites who feed on negativity. They are quick to point out the flaw in everything but they never even have the slightest enthusiasm or the intellect to even attempt to do anything positive to make things better or come up with, propose possible solutions.

Thesedays, you cannot effectively predict a person's cast by just looking at them. Only after knowing a person's last name do you arrive at your own foregone conclusions. Perhaps you can make correct predictions, but you can never make 100% correct prediction about a person's last name by just looking at them.

Only mr. negative, know it all can predict a person's last name by just looking at a person because he is constantly seeking to categorize and classify others depending upon their looks.

Totally agree GrgDai.
I don't support all the charities out there. Sometimes they even have negative effect on us. Few think they are entitled to do anything just because they had donated some dollars to one charity; they think their obligation/responsibility is complete. I also object to charities which foster laziness and over dependence (most of the foreign aids that the third world country gets). But not all are bad.

This action is a positive note on so many bad things happening back home. The educated ones should strive to do more of these good things. If we either just shut up quietly or aid the meaningless rebels back home, the end to our culture and our country will not be too far away, and trust me, I am not exaggerating.

Man just listen to these folks, they are just blind.  If it was not for charities(foreign aid) Nepal as a country will cease to exist.  Just show how ignorant we as Nepali people are.  Nepal dubna lagisakyo Yo gadha haru chahi khaaali hawaaa ma Mahal banaudai bashcha.  If you think racism will change in Nepal just by changing your last name  he he he YOU AR E VERY NAIVE MY BOY.

The reason I am skeptical:-   1 Democracy ayo bhaney hamro sabai ko life better huncha Bhaneko( I fully supported them) Khoi ta ?  Life ailey samma pani justaaaa tustai.
2 La la Raja ley desh phirtaa liyooo bhaney sabai thik hunch, Khoi ta ? Nothing happened(he just sat on his ass and did nothing).
3 then the commies came to end the corruption and better Nepal and its been almost 4 yrs and counting. Khoi taa ?

I am still fugging waiting here And here is this MORON who thinks changing names will solve all our problems.  GET FUGGING REAL !!

and also we need to sacrifice more bokas to fix our aeroplanes rather than having engineers look at the problem and resolve the issue.  has kinda similar twist to it.

Not sure if they are kidding or just trolls.
So, just cause the past actions haven't been fruitful, you stop doing anything and discourage others as well.

"here is this MORON who thinks changing names will solve all our problems." Point me to that moron and I will give you $10K. Who the heck said that? Do you even have an ounce of rational brain in your mind?
