RUDRA PANGENI

KATHMANDU: It was a bandh called by Brahmin-Chhetri Samaj on Friday morning, and Mega Bank CEO Anil Keshary Shah clad in traditional daura suruwal and bhadgaule topi was struggling to pass through Babarmahal in a journalist’s car with ‘PRESS’ sticker to participate in a programme.

On the way, he came across thousands of people bearing the brunt of bandh on the issue of federalism and came up with an innovative idea to press the political parties for timely drafting of the constitution. On his Facebook wall he wrote that he is proud of his ethnic heritage and “far more honored and privileged to be a son of NEPAL, my motherland.” He changed his Facebook name to Anil Keshary Nepal “till we get our Constitution promulgated” and urged his Facebook friends to join “me and change your fb last name to Nepal” for a united Nepal.

It did move some prominent Nepali figures. Journalist Gajendra Budhathoki replaced his surname with Nepali. Former BBC journalist Sushil Sharma wrote “I am Nepali” on his Facebook status, and asked others if they wanted to be known by their caste or just as a Nepali. He also gave a reference of a survey commissioned by a weekly magazine that claimed 74 per cent of people like to be called Nepali rather than be known by their surnames.

Among the users changing their last name are journalist Prateek Pradhan, pilot Bijaya Lama, entrepreneurs Binaya Lamichhane and Prashant Raj Karki. Vikram Upadhyaya, a Nepali student in Chicago, also expressed solidarity with the campaign.

“In order to support undivided Nepal and prove my indifference to the caste, creed and ethnicity, I have decided to (in response to Anil Nepal, CEO of Mega Bank) change my facebook identity until May 27th to Prateek Nepali,” Pradhan wrote on his wall.

Talking to this daily, Anil said, “The culture of disagreeing with others by means of bandh should be shunned for ever to unleash the potential of Nepali youth.”

He said the campaign was a humble protest against strikes and bandh.

Anil said he was not against federalism but the restructuring should be for the prosperity of Nepal.

I am skeptical of a name change. That should be towards the tail end of the social reformation, a kind of icing on the cake, a celebration to remind ourselves and everyone of our struggles, our successes, our lessons from our failures, the sum of our experiences.

BUT,

we fking stupid headed nepalis want the best first, without working for it. ALWAYS. Lets change our names, lets change our flag, lets change the bank notes, lets change this/that. I'm really sick of people wanting results without hardwork. In my opinion, that is what has plagued our country. The Maoists injected carcinogenous thought of everyone living in the same social status and the (general) public misunderstood that as - wealth/status is a birthright. I'ts not. Like everything else, we have to work for it.

We dont understand so many things as a nation. You and I may be educated, informed, but that wont change anything when viewing the entire demography as one. We are just abberrants in the statistic. So before changing your names, change your attitude towards the problem and tackle it at its root: education.

Our country is dying. And, when you are dying, it's better to do anything than do nothing.
Sounds insignificant to change last name, but it's symbolic and I've my solidarity on it.

This is same faking problem of Nepalese people. When someone comes with an idea we creates 100 questions beside helping them. Because we think our idea is only best thing in the world.specially those few [Disallowed String for - Bad word 'fuk']ers who has so called good earning jobs in states.
I fell shame to be nepali because of you.
Facebook is not just a fun site now. It can be used to give pressure to governement too. We already see on middle east how facebook and twitter boost revolution.
Country is in last stage of civil war and you guys are fighting on such freaking reason.
Idk and i dont care who came with idea to change name on fb but its a great idea and i am following it.
I know this will not change nepal or do somthing big but i can console myself i did whatever i can from here.
[Disallowed String for - Bad word 'fuk'] you all.

Yeah if you criticize anyone you get this reaction. But if we don't then we are back to same old same old.  If we as a society don't question people's motives and intention then who will ?  Thehi Nepal ma justai jusley jey payo thehi garey bhaihalyo ni. Sahi baba lai chahi mailey Nepal ko laagi ke ke garyaa chu bahnera  mero resume' dekhaunu paryo ki kya ho ? ha ha ha  It is just like those people who were protesting in front of UN few yrs ago chanting Gyaney chor desh chood, at that time too I asked the same question "What next ?"  ten thousand diff ppl had ten thousand diff ans and look at where we are.  NOWHERE

MY POINT HERE IS CHANGING OUR LAS NAMES IS NOT GOING TO CHANGE OUR FACES, IT IS BASICALLY LIKE PUTING ON BAND AID ON THE PROBLEM. I FEEL IT IS POINTLESS.  CHANGING NAME IS NOT GONNA HELP YOUR APPEARANCE AS A JYAPU OR A BAHUN OR A MADHISEY.  OUR PROBLEMS RUN A LOT DEEPER THAN DAT.

Bathroomcoffee the point is some people choose to do that. Some women change their last names after they get married some don't. It's their choice. What is your point in ridiculing or disagreeing with their choice?

Not sure about Chaurey, but at least Bathroom Coffee almost made a sound point.
He is criticizing something somebody proposed; I actually support that. We ought to have criticism, hopefully constructive, so that we can analyze the good and the bad. Using "ha ha ha" and words like "moron" doesn't help put a sound criticism; and if you want to criticize a point, you should be equally willing to hear the other side. I hope you will do that.

Like rethink stated, the offer is still valid. $10K is waiting for you.

You said changing name won't change the appearance. I tell you that you are missing the point. Changing the last name (temporarily) is not to shadow or cover once appearance. Matter of fact, I don't feel any shame keeping my last name; we ought to be proud of what we have. But on the same token, with all caste related violence we have seen, this gesture can be seen as a symbolic opposition to those violence and caste based division. Is it going to make it all good? Nobody is claiming that. We can't be satisfied with just change of name and thinking our responsibility is over; but its a start.

If you still don't see a point on doing this, why don't you NOT do it instead of discouraging and mocking everybody else who supports it.

Astu.

saibabaji well said!

Bathroom coffee says The reason I am skeptical:-   1 Democracy ayo bhaney hamro sabai ko life better huncha Bhaneko( I fully supported them) Khoi ta ?  Life ailey samma pani justaaaa tustai.
2 La la Raja ley desh phirtaa liyooo bhaney sabai thik hunch, Khoi ta ? Nothing happened(he just sat on his ass and did nothing).
3 then the commies came to end the corruption and better Nepal and its been almost 4 yrs and counting. Khoi taa ?

That's like saying oh I supported cancer research and AIDS research for years and years but KHOI TA?? No cure yet. I supported hiring different agencies, different scientists but no cure. KHOI TA?? So now I don't support any initiative towards finding a cure because it never worked in the past. That's the most dumbest logic I have ever seen.

It's clear who's the fool here constantly  exaggerating and losing touch with reality like Kiddo pointed out.
