Religion: What should it contribute?

Here is another assessment of atheistic society. Agreed that no one has to tell you to do the nice things. You don’t have to be under any organized denomination to promote love, charity, humanity, help..etc. Just do the right/nice thing on your own. Understood.
But do you, my atheists friends (I find your logics plausible to be honest)!, agree that the same ‘right/nice’ things will be defined differently by different people?  What is the right thing? It was one thing 500yrs ago, will be different later? Love is love..charity is charity..devotion is devotion, but how we practice will not be the same. For me, devotion may be lovingly waiting all for my gf/bf to come home at night even though he/she may be cheating me….for some people cutting themselves with the swords in the name of god could be devotion...what is revered as ‘love’ in my family could be called ‘pansy’ deeds in your family. How do you define, or systemize those ‘nice’ qualities? Such definitions are contemporary…laws are contemporary…you know the gun debate...even the assault rifles are being defended.
Do you believe that a systematic moral value ought to be taught to our kids from the day one? Think about 10 different kids come to the classroom with the 10 different ideas of ‘niceness’. And it results in cancelling the value system in kids..and what happens is the discipline, a sense of responsibility goes away..because there is nothing, nobody..”I” define what is nice and I follow my interpretation. Is it not? I recognize that for my more evidence oriented friends this could be the worst logic on needs of a religion. Do you notice in the American society (or any society where the modernity over rules the moral values) there are more depression, more unhappiness, more Sandy Hooks, more Adam Lanzas? Do you even agree that this is a problem and see a need to fix it? If so, how? Ten different families teaching ten different things to kids …It is a chaos. This is where; I think, historically the idea of role of religion came about.
So @------, if I agree with your ‘upbringing’ idea, I do refuse to believe that there is no solution. I am sure the ways religions are used have brought very negative consequences. I agree the modality of it needs to change. Perhaps, remove the power (priest/pundits) centers, include the science, promote equality, recognize the ever-evolving society, promote the unity of mankind and nations? Perhaps?
