A patriot who loved the United States and his citizens, who was distraught at seeing the government abuse power against the people. When he brought out the details of how much the government was abusing it's powers, he was called a traitor. The hapless citizens cannot do anything to protect someone who is trying to save them from overreaching arms of the government.
The hapless people support the government and accuse everyone of being conspiracy theorist because acknowledging reality would make them look very very stupid.

Snowden had to escape the dictatorship in the USA because he found out the hard way that "Truth is treason in an empire of lies."
