Somebody came up with the argument that Sachin is way better than Lara in One day matches. which i dont agree because there isnt much difference between their averages and lara coming lower down at 4, 5, 6 means he doesnot have many chances to hit centuries. It is really commendable that he still averages over 40.
I have some fact about the playes,

Fact 1. Since the great Kolkata test match against Australia in 2001, where Laxman, Dravid and Harbhajan crafted India’s greatest ever test win and a genuine rebirth, India has won over 25 test matches in India and abroad till early 2007. The Man of the Match distributions are telling – Laxman 2, Kumble 4, Sehwag 2, Harbhajan 5, Dravid 5, Pathan 3, Ganguly, Kathik and Das 1 each . Sachin Tendulkar? Zero.

Fact 2. Many keep saying that he’s the greatest one-day batsman ever.I agree he is better than lara but only slightly and not away ahead as someone suggested. The figures sure suggest that. Matches: over 350. Average: over 44. Centuries: over 40. Wow.

Tendulkar’s ODI averages in Australia (against australia) , England (against england), South Africa (against south africa) and New Zealand(against new zealand) (usually tougher places to bat in than the subcontinent) are 28, 29, 27 and 27 respectively . His tally of centuries in these countries is 0, 1, 1 and 0. Meanwhile, his ODI averages against Bangladesh, Kenya and Zimbabwe, namibia are 50, 108 and 49, 151.

Compare this to Brian Lara’s ODI record. Matches: 299. Average: of 41 100s: 19. Huh, you say?

Also, Lara’s averages do not get ridiculously skewed against the weaker teams (as is curiously the case with all the other great batsmen, except Tendulkar). He averages 42, 43 and 45 against Bangladesh, Kenya and Zimbabwe.

Fact Three: It is not a coincidence that not a single Tendulkar innings featured in the Wisden list of the “100 Greatest Test Innings” of all time. Not even from before 2001. This is not to say that he did not produce some great test innings, but none of them met the most important criterion in that Wisden exercise – winning your team the match, or saving it – that’s what pressure is about at the end of the day. The only classic fourth innings knock Tendulkar has played in his entire career is the 136 against Pakistan in Chennai, but he did not take it all the way, and India lost by a handful of runs. (Within a month of that losing effort, Lara produced a stunning 150 not out that helped his team beat Australia by 1 wicket, and that innings was in the top ten of that same Wisden list).

Despite all this I still hold the fact that Lara and sachin fan are little bit too short sighted and cannot see beyond them. For last 5-6 years india's best batsman have been consistantly Rahul Dravid and he have won more matches than any other player. This Adelaide the First time i am seeing Sachin Tendulkar dominate the bowling attack for don't know how many years.

I still do reckon ricky ponting as the best batsman among his generations. Because of his ability to not only score so regularly but also to dominate the attack.

Ani pyari kt. To say Sachin is the best is your opinion and we resepect that. But to say Hayden, Ponting, kallis, Dravid are way below Lara and sachin shows you lack genuine cricketing judgment.  It is complete disregard to those players ability.

Matthew hayden gets 3rd century int the three consecutive test .  He didn't play in perth and Austrlaia lost.  I am sure for a tendulkar fan these sorts of records by non tendulkar goes unnoticed.

He got world record by getting fastest 30 centuries than anybody else.

Yes no Quiero. Hayden is the best batsman who gets to play against the Ghisa pita indian bowling right? Are you a douche or what?
Just can't understand how fickle minded can someone be. Kallis > Ponting. Mark Waugh > Hayden. WTF are you on about?

Lara can be compared with Tendulkar, please don't kid us by comparing someone ordinary such as Ponting to Tendulkar. More matches, more innings? Doh. You're one of those people who can twist the tales with some stats as if there's nothing better...

So tell me..

Sehwag's average in Test matches is fifty, is he even half as good as DADA himself? Is he anywhere close to being Tendulkar who has an average of 55? What are you on about man?

P.S. Don't be telling me that Murali is better than Warnie now.

And while we're at it...some of you sacha deshbhaktas w/ the brains of a 8 year old kid can f*** off from the thread. This is the debate about Tendulkar and his brilliance. Don't try to bring your deshbhakta shit in here.

Quagmire. Murali and warne can be case of debate. Similar to comparing sachin and lara. Murali may end up taking a lot more wickets than warne like sachin making more run than lara. But we all know who have more flair.

For any neutral supporter it is shane warne and Brain lara who makes heart pounding.

Hayden run against ghisa pita indian attack. Lol. probably then you would have to take most of the Sachin hundreds and double hundreds . Because most of those bloating not outs came against ghisa pita bangladesh and zimbabwe.  Just after perth test i read  Venkatesh Prasad saying India have the best bowling attack in the world. haha .

                                  and  you said

"please don't kid us by comparing someone ordinary such as Ponting to Tendulkar"

just proves you are either such a fan whose vision starts with sachin and ends with sachin or you are the person with no cricketing brain.

No quiero, morons like you would be bloating about some personal scores rather than the effectiveness of the individual performances. Tell me something, Akram's personal best is a double hundred while Mark Waugh's personal best is 153. Does it mean that Mark Waugh is nowhere as good as Akram?

What about Atapattu? He's scored 7-8 double centuries. He's better than the lot then? Use some cricketing brain instead of some lackluster and boring viewpoint.

For any neutral supporter Lara is a better batsman than Tendulkar re? That's the biggest joke of the year. Do me a favor, create a poll in here and lets see who's better. Tendulkar will easily brush Lara aside by 70-30 margin.

Quagmire you may be right. Why? because  indians will come and vote where ever there is polling. So disregard the polling. So lets consider neutral voting.

wow. What a brilliant job No-quiero. October 23,2005 huh? That was right at the period when he was seeing a massive slump in form because of being out for so long. You never cease to amaze me man. So Rahul Dravid is better than Inzamam Ul Haq then because Dravid came third?

The thing is, you seem to concentrate more on who wins more matches than anything else. In that regard, Kumble would come nowhere close to being amongst the top bowlers. Laxman would be rated as better batsman that Tendulkar. But tendular's brilliance lies in his consistency, his techniques, his straight drives, his cover drives, his dominance of spinners and the burden that he's been carrying for so long. He is clearly better than the lot. Sure, I can't change your views and there's no way in f.... hell are you gonna be able to change our views..

Man, I was trying to avoid this thread... Over reactions  from both side compelled me to..
let me start with this line "Greatness in on our mind which cannot be proven by stats"

First To Tendulkar supporters:
Yes he has the  biggest burden on his back in the cricket history. And playing with such a pressure for so many yrs is commendable. But saying that, he really hasn't produced match winning test innings , smthing like twin centuries against Australia in ODIs. His 241 againstAustralia,  Steve waugh fairwell spoiler one, is probably the biggest and the best in terms of cause of the team. Talking about test after 2000, he is clearly playing second fiddle to Dravid in his team.
For No quiero and co....
Lol when u say Tendulkar is not in the league of Ponting.. You brought the average of Tendulkar in Australia.
Do u know what is average of Ponting in India: Freaking 12.
Unless he proves his credential when he scores runs in turning pitches and dust of subcontinent, he is good player but not the great.
You have kept on saying about "cricketing sense";but who told you it is tough to get runs in Australia as oppose to India (i am talking about test)???Have you counted how many 500+ scores are scored in Australia? Every country has different climate and player naturally get acclimatize in that very climate. Sure, players from Asia have tough time in Australia because the pitches over there bounce much more than the pitches of any part of the world. So the players who are used to implant front foot get in ackward position. Players like Laxman with solid back foot drive have excelled in Australia. It is not a co-incidence that Australia won in India (2005)after three decades. If it was easy to score run in India, every match would have been draw.
And who doesnt have not-outs to bolster the average???
Between Lara and Tendulkar
As some one mentioned before, Tendulkar inspires more people than lara (cross country). I always liked Lara, but then I never wished to bat like him(may be because of his unorthodox technique). Sure he scored runs, but that shuffle, high back lift made it ugly. Tendulkar wasn't unorthodox or premeditative. So aspiring cricketers would look to Tendulkar than to Lara. No doubt, both of them are great cricketers and this debate would go on coz both side have plenty to talk about. So as for greatness, I would say Tendulkar too.

My personal favs: Rahul Sharad Dravid and Adam Gilchrist

Maverick, Dravid might be your personal favorite, but surely even you cannot say that he's better than Tendulkar :P

Good post btw.

Maverick you are probably first person to said Lara bats Ugly. So much for your analysis.

Unfortunatly the 241* you are talking about tendulkar isnt a match winning innings. Infact he got more criticisms from indian media after that innings because people said tendulkar slowed down so much that it put everybody to sleep.

Tendulkar winning innings . Sorry guys show me a match wining innings. One i can remember is 155* against Australia in Chennai. But what about the bowling attack of Australia.  Adam dale, kasprowickz,, Gavin robertson and injured shane warne. no mcgrath, no fleming, no paul riffel, no Gillespie.  Weakest aussie attack for a decade.

And maverick every batsman have their weakness. If you look average of great Garfield sobers against newzealand it is less about 20. Does that make him less batsman.

Quagmire. Tendulkar dominance against bowlers.????? You must be living on 90's. He have failed to consistently dominate over the years.

hahahaha No_quiero. You never cease to amaze me man. Tendulkar has failed to dominate the bowloers in this decade re? What about the World Cup of 2003? And India's tour of Australia? India's tour of Pakistan? India's tour of South Africa and the West Indies? What about India's recent tour of England back in 2003 and recently? Are you high bro or on dope or crack? Have you glanced how good Tendulkar has been playing off late? Over 8 scores of 90 plus. Gee. What are you on about man?

Quagmire. domination doesnot mean batting at a snails pace.  India tour of Austrlia?

When expect this time he dominated. You should go back to 1998.

Inida tour of South africa. - sorry he never dominated
India tour of Westindies --  Lol. when did he dominated.  got 3 ducks out of 4 innings during the middle of the series in 2003

Recent tour of england - Who quick did he batted? Did didnt dominated bowling.  Even kallis scores runs. But great players should dominate the play.

India tour of pakistan. - he once failed to score 50 in whole of series.
India previous tour - Failed in whole series expect one innings of 194* where shewag hug the limelight. But 194* . he batted so slowly with  his self centered batting that dravid was forced to declare.

No quiero: His average isn't below 20. It is 23.76 with one hundred in 11 test. With the very team, he took 19 wicket at an average of 35. So don't come here with ur twisted facts. btw.. average of 12 in 8 tests is very different than average of mid twenties with so many wickets.
Btw... I never said 241 was match winning one. I was saying that was the best possible (subdued ) inning he has played and also told it cannot be compare with fourth inning heroics of other players. What are u reading dude??

Ofcourse: Brain Lara was not a technical batsman.I was talking about his body position-bat position, not his run hitting abilities which i never doubt is soothing to eyes in the history. If you dont see the runs, you will find  person jumping around. Was effective but also his stance and body positions weren't good either.

No quiero: You were also saying about the Tendulkar's career is bloated by Not Outs

Tendulkar has 25 not outs in 145 test. Ponting has 26 in 115 test.
