Hi all,
I am a college student who have yet to find her true passion in life. Even though I am in my early twenties, I still don't know what I wanna do for the rest of my life. I feel kinda lost. Sometimes just thinking about the future scares the hell out of me. Do you guys face similar issues? Another question I wanna ask is ,What motivates you to do things that you do in life?

P.S. If you guys don't mind, please share your life experiences, both the good and the bad. And if you have any advice, I will be more than happy to listen to it. Thanks :-)

Enjoy the flow of life. What is life? Time between birth till death. Two gametes develop into a complex natural machine like you. Are we just animals who evolved from single celled organisms and after millions of years have brains which makes your time on earth so complex. Enjoy the nature, enjoy the enviromental phenomenal mysteries in the world. Utilize your time, not only studying books but nature. Everything written in books are found in nature except literature. Enlighten your life with exploration. You dont know next day whats gonna come, a man just diagnosed of cancer have six months to live on the other hand a baby just born is going to learn the language of society. Again " Survival of the fittest", dont forget you have to survive, and stop taking life too seriously. Greed and Power, two weapons of misery. Take it easy Pal.

Thank you all very much for replying. At first, I had second thoughts of creating this thread because I thought nobody would comment on it.

@Rewire. I really like what you wrote. I understand what you mean by "Nepal view of success of wealth and power".  You went on to say "Sadly, I fall under the same category". To be honest, I think I fall under this category too. Since young, the mentality for me was going to school will lead to a good job and with a good job comes a nice house and a nice life.

I have typical nepali parents. I know they want the best for me but sometimes they can be really annoying. When I entered college, they wanted me to do nursing. They told me that with a nursing degree, I can get a job anywhere. It is true to a certain extent but I just didn't wanna do it. To be truthful, hospitals and doctors scare the crap out of me. If I think I am not gonna die, I will avoid hospitals at all cost. In the future, if I am out of job, I know my parents are gonna use this against me, they will tell me stuff like "we told you to do nursing but you didn't listen to us".

My mom's mentality is either go to school, get good grades or get married. When I was younger, I never really thought about what I wanted to be. I just wanted good grades because I didn't want my mother to get me married off. I think this is why even to this day, I don't know what I am passionate about. I just studied to get good grades. I didn't think of my life as a whole. Maybe my parents screwed me up. LoL.

Another thing I wanna mention is why does it feel so different being a girl in a nepali society. There are double standards for us. The older generation want us to be everything; have a good career, be a good wife(get married under the age of 25, if not you are too old), be a good mother, be a good everything. I think guys definitely have it a lot easier in our society. :-)

For me, there are two categories of my activities:
1) things I want to do
2) things I have to do now to do the next thing after it

2) my job/studies anything that I am doing career wise right now should be a stepping stone for the next step towards job or studies. I am doing undergrad to prepare myself to enroll masters. why masters or what after that is not my concern because i don't think that far, just two steps  - now for next. there might not be much motivation/passion on this but there is some... for sure.

1) sometimes i want to do some things because I want to do and i do. no questions asked. no regrets. period.

Hi everyone,

@copycat. "For me, there are two categories of my activities:
                   1) things I want to do
                   2) things I have to do now to do the next thing after it"

Thank you for writing what you wrote. This makes a lot of sense. I am gonna write this down somewhere. If you don't mind, I am also gonna pass it on to some friends of mine who are also kinda lost.

P.S. I deleted some posts that had a lot of curse words in it. I don't think we have to use vulgarities to get a point across.

"..Their
capability gets saturated and hence they cannot think outside of the
box, hoard mentality. Sadly,I fall under the same category..."

I thought it should rather be "herd mentality"

Miss Summer5, I think your mom is right. You should go school , get good grades or get married. Thats what everybody does apparently. go school get good grades, start great career and finally get married to the who loves you .. live happy. Don't waste your time thinking bs before you end up with nothing .goodluck.

Hi all,

@Guest4. I am sorry I accidently deleted your post after reading it. I actually meant to press the reply button but ended up pressing the delete button.

You wrote "If it makes you feel better, I have been out of college for a few years and I still feel the same". Well, I definetely felt better knowing that there are people out there who are like me. It is always good to know that I am not alone. Hopefully, one day we will both find what we are passionate about.

Thanks for the reply. :-)

You can't "accidentally" delete someone's post and make stuffs up and then quote the person. Fortunately, the quote isn't that bad, so I will pretend, for now, that that is what I actually said. :)

To add to what I said earlier, I think we should be able to take risks in life, especially when you can and when the consequences of the unfavorable outcome are not that dire. You can't agree to everything your parents tell you to do so that you become a good son or a daughter and not feel screwed up when things don't turn out the way you or them expected? If you had the courage to tell your parents no when they asked you to study but instead had gone to chase storm, life wouldn't have been that scary!

I don't know where this chasing storm thing came from, but I feel like I can understand why people chase storm.

You know, I share similar situation with you except for one thing. I don't blame my parents because they did what they thought, with the knowledge they had, was best for me. Now, did I think the same way about six months ago? The answer is 'NO'.
I realized that I needed to be a better person to have better things in life.
I am not a book person, but said to myself, you know, if I could change myself just by reading a book, that would be the easiest thing. So I began searching for a book over the internet. And found this book called 'See You At The Top'.
It took me almost a year, to seriously start reading this book about five months ago. (I guess, when you are into so many negative things, you need some time to adjust with good/positive things, you know)
After reading it many times(I still do), I have somewhat changed my way of thinking. They say that, thoughts become things. What you are today is the outcome of your past thoughts. And your thoughts today will shape your future. You cannot monitor all the thoughts but CAN differentiate it, as being good or not good, then focus on good ones. It won't change your whole pattern of thinking overnight but you will change, one thought at a time, as Steve Chandler says it.
Self-motivation is like a bath, you got to take it every day or every time you are fed with negative things by people, media or other means. I recommend, you read 'See You At The To', by Zig Ziglar.

Important: Surround yourself with people who support you. If you have any questions, feel free to email me at - bipin.tripathi@gmail.com. I wish you best of luck with everything. (there are so many good things that I could/want to share but I think you will have better impression if you discovered it yourself. please get the book!!!)

Hi all,

@Guest4. I really deleted your post by accident. Like I said I meant to hit the reply button but ended up hitting the delete button. Sorry again.

@malekhu. I will definitely get the book once my summer finals are over. Thanks for recommending the book and thanks for leaving your email address. That was really nice of you. I will take your advice and read the book.

@SATHI999. After reading what you wrote. It reminded me of what my friend once told me. She said when she was back home, she was not financially stable but she was happy, mentally and emotionally. But now she is financially stable in US but she is not happy. I guess the pursuit of happiness is never ending.

P.S. Thank you all very much for replying. :-)

Maslow has appropriately answered your question in 1943. Human motivations start from the base of the pyramid and go up as long as the base necessities are met.

Buddha answered your question over 2000 years ago. His motivation was Mokshya.

In the universe there are two kinds of science, one is materialistic science and one is spiritual science.

Material science creates cars, refrigerators and weapons of mass destruction. Spiritual science creates a harmonious connection between the living things in the planet. A balance of a development of both the sciences would have been ideal scenario for this world but unfortunately spiritual science development has been suppressed.

Our motivations should be guided by progress on one hand and understanding of where we stand on the other hand. More than often we forget to understand or care about the ecosystem where we all live.

Sorry for intentional rambling.

Some of you guys said you are in early twenty and already made lots of mistakes in life.. com'on guys.. life in early 20s means your life has not been started yet. I wish i were in early tweties now :)..

If you are in such tender age, your prime worry should be to excel in study i.e. prepare for better future/job.

Core fact is - who you will be tomorrow depends on what you do today. It is so simple.

If you dont feel motivated - exercise. Do fast walk for 30 mins or jugging or go to gym. You will feel the difference.

Some people are in depression (specially in USA) and they dont know this fact. They just feel sad and 'not happy' for no reason. Take some good multivitamins, fish oils (omega-3,6), exercise and sleep in time. Your life will change..

smile :)

Hi all,

@grgDai. I have actually seen this pyramid before when I took an intensive psychology class. But since it was just 3 weeks long we didn't go in depth. But I do remember something, Maslow stated that very few people actually reach the top(1-2%). So this makes me wonder why self-actualization is the hardest to achieve. Guess the journey to achieve this level is a very long process.

Don't be sorry about the rambling. Appreciate it. :-)

P.S. I am glad I created this blog. Whenever I log in and see that the number of responses have gone up, I get excited. I know it is lame but it's okay. LOL
