Narayan Wagle gets Madan Puraskar

KOL Report

KATHMANDU, Aug 31 - The Madan Puraskar Award Trust has decided to present the "Madan Puraskar" for the year 2061 to litterateur and journalist Narayan Wagle for his book entitled ?Palpasa Caf?.?

Palpasa Caf?, the debut novel by Wagle, had created a new "fastest selling" record in the Nepali book publication history. The second edition of the novel has already hit bookstores after 5,000 copies were sold out in the first month of its release in the end of July.

The decision to this effect was taken by a meeting of the trust Wednesday. The award carries a purse of Rs. 200,000.

The 245-page novel has been able to arouse enormous interest and satisfaction among the readers because it highlights contemporary issues facing the country, book critics say.

Wagle is the editor of Kantipur daily.

Likewise, the trust decided to present this year?s ?Jagadamba Shree Award? to litterateur Phanindra Raj Khetala in recognition of his more than half-century long service to the field of Nepali literature. The award also carries a purse of Rs. 200,000. (snn)

****************************************************

Congratulations to Narayan Wagle!

I can't comment on his book because I have yet to get hold of a copy and read it, though -- thanks to the publisher Kiran of Nepalaya -- I know that a signed-by-the-author copy is waiting for me in Kathmandu.

Narayan is an immensely likable guy. That, plus his being the editor of Kantipur makes him a really powerful figure in Nepal. Besides, all the young journalists adore him. All these combine to make it virtually impossible for his book to get a 'bad' review in Nepal.

Some observations on the prize, and, as a no-nonsense long-time friend of Narayan, I hope he tolerates my raising these issues here.

1. Narayan's book came out just two months ago or so. Now it's already won Nepal's most prestigious literature prize.

I can't help thinking: Isn't the prize for Narayan a little too soon, too early, too fast?
I mean, the book is getting ecstatic reviews and is still in its ''honeymoon' phase,
so to speak . . . surely Narayan's winning it NEXT year perhaps would have been
more appropriate, I'd think.

2. By giving the prize to Narayan this fast this soon, are the prize committee members (who are anonymous) sending a signal to the market that they seriously consider even the very recent books of first-time novelists?

3. I am confused: Madan Purasakar has this image of being really stuffy, dowdy and too mustily Nepali lit. It usually goes to people with three long names such as . . . Krishna Prasad Parajuli. Is the Prize Committee trying to be hip and young and oh-so-relevant in contemporary times by giving the prize to Narayan? Alternatively, is it trying to piggy-back on the poularity of Narayan's novel?

Just some food for thought.

Once again, congrats to Narayan.

Hi Sunnydev:

I wonder if your thinking will be same if the writer of Palpasa Cafe is an struggling Narayani Tharu. Are you gonna be as Chauvinist of Wagle's as of Tharu's???

Ok then if you say so, why the hell you are not writing when Ashu isindulged in "plagiarism"? Please do not feel compelled to reply this... it's you who throws yourself into writing here in sajha... don't blame me.. Just walk away.

Ashu ji:

You have been indicted of committing Plagiarism here.... I still think you can protect your image if you write the thinker's name of whose statement you quoted. It's never late... You have to correct yourself.

What they about Cigarette, Ek palta khaye, Gyani hunchha. Dherai palta khaye Bani parchha.

So please don't make it a habit stealing other's statements in your write ups, whether it be journal or magazine articles or sajha threads. Respect all sorts of write ups equally.

Savior, Thanks for the Salvage

I don't care about what words/style/phrases/statements/ookhan/slang people use. Afterall, in my country, intellectual property is just the copyright of the music and video albums. I am compelled to write just because of their thought process and their stands. I appreciate your stand but the claims are lame. I even appreciate your ability to see across the veil but show me if you need respect.

Talking about the stands, Ashu stands for "appreciate the good D unless you come across hidden wrong intent" on the selection of MADAN PURASKAR this year. He was in the state of "read and criticize". And i am not compelled by that to bark on him. I am compelled just because some of you are demeaning an effort just because of obvious jealousy or perceptional error.

And what's up with this Chauvinist of wagle? Mind it. i have never said that Wagle is the most deserving talented writer of this era and he is the only candidate for the prize. I would never say that he is the greatest novelist of the time. I am saying that he is not bad to deny his ability or to go a little bit further and claim to be a RAW agent, greedy bahun. I was just wondering why the people saw bango aaunla without any reason. Even though I am following this thread, i haven't seen any supporting reason except for blank accusation.

My stand: NO body is guilty until that?s proved.
My Problem: Someone is acting as the authority of the truth.
I?ll hear you only if you are credible. Right now you are losing your credibility and as the time goes by, you are deferring the main issue here.

Ashu?s plagiarism and ?for anything else try Ashu? (sounds like, for everything else there is master card )are other bigger issues. Thanks for making me aware of these issues. But what I see is your request (in the form of challenge) with the wistful thinking of creating ANtiAshu gang in Sajha.

Sunnydev writes at the end above:

>>>with the wistful thinking of creating ANtiAshu gang in Sajha<<<<

Thank you for your correct observation, Sunnydev.

There's always been this TINY MINORITY here on Sajha who cannot digest
their meals if they don't attack me for no reason. And so it goes, in a predictably boring manner.

I am confident that most sensible and reasonable Sajha folks see their attacks for what they are: howlings of cowards who don't have the balls to swing their bat using their
real names.

But hey, this sort of howlings happen among us Nepalis, all the time, and that's life.

*****
On another note, over the years, I have learnt to turn their attacks into some sort of an experiment for myself. It goes like this:

In Nepal, I have noticed that most decent and competent people of many backgrounds are reluctant to enter public service because they are afraid of being unfairly attacked and ridiculed publicly. Most of them cannot digest unfair criticisms and attacks.

And that presents this problem.

Politics or public leadereship DEMANDS decent/competent people.

But such people are opting out of public leadership positions because they fear being unfairly attacked and ridiculed in public.

A solution could be that: those Nepalis who aspire to some sort of a public leadership position (ranging from ward chairman to anything above) MUST start
actively increasing, bit by bit, their TOLERANCE for unfair and silly attacks by taking them in small doses when they are young.

How else is one going to develop a thick skin that one requires to do ANYTHING positive in Nepal?

This way, when the time to perform real public duties comes, their coping mechanisms against unfair public attacks is strong, healthy and resilient, and that they are NOT
a least bit distracted from their public service.

In my optimistic moments (most of the time), I like to frame these attacks in this way, and learn to live with them.

Congratulations to Narayan for writing a very interesting novel.
I just finished reading it.
Will share my coments with Narayan when I get back to KTM.

Thank you all for your contributrions to this thread.

Don't be like parrot all the time chanting same cries.. You are really a Plagiarist.

Again your perception is guided by your monkey in your brain. Just as usual demeaning people. It's a quality. But I am just curious. what do you do for living. I son't expect the real one. Thanks for taking me as tears of someone else. This is the final weapon you have to prove that Narayan is ....., I don't want to repeat several times.

But remember. Indict Aashu and nullify my existence; that doesn't support your stand on the initial issue. YOu gave up a long before. I give up now, give up asking for the real analytical discussion on the issue.

But at the end, It was interesting.

Prem dai,
you are unnecessarily splitting hairs about "What does not kill you, only makes you stronger" by Nietzsche because it is so oft used that it has almost taken the form of an axiom. For example, if you were to say/write "To be or not to be" you would rarely mention Shakespeare unless it were in a Shakespearean or literary context. Therefore, it would be redundent for you mouth off at Ashu for this often used phrase. Plagiarism is a non-issue in this case unless he used the phrase in a psychological context.

However, if you do have some concrete criticism on the topic at hand, I'm sure he'd happily humor your rancor.

As uneducated as I am, I softly checked the meaning of quagmire (A soft wet area of low-lying land that sinks underfoot)...

Sitara I think what you mean is not their quagmire... it should be your "quigmire" between those two khambas.. who would not like to, me too ha ha. Nakachari mori... kasto sansanikhej parchhe!!!
