This is what your little sisters and brothers will be studying in Nepal in a few years' time.

Doubtless, this "scientific" and "relevant" education will prepare them well to meet the challenges of the changing world.

Are they gonna kill more than one baby too? All I say is both communism and west are equally responsible for propoganda war. But the truth lies somewhere....I dislike hisila yami though :(, she is not very articulate somehow reminds me of ganeshman sigh.

This looks like Indian agenda to me.

Majority of Nepalese hate India and Indians for one reason or the other – border issue, trade and treaty, war, etc. It is almost impossible for Indians to change Nepali people's attitude towards them – not that it matters to them. Let's say changing Nepali people's attitude towards India is her number one priority. How would it be possible for Nepalese to love India as much as they love Hindi movies? Help Maoists to come to power and to implement their educational policy. That alone would not only be sufficed to change Nepalese attitude, but it would also open doors for discussions amongst Nepalese that whether Nepal should be a part of India or not. It would be just like green card holders taking citizenship for more benefits. How many parents would be ready for their young children to teach that load of bull instead of heading south for real education?

If that op/ed was meant to be some sort of mission journalism, it probably served it's purpose (because Maoists still have a long way to go to adapt to what bourgeois democracy is all about; they still have a hangover and obsession with armed rebellion and ideology and it makes, therefore, sense to remind them of it).

Otherwise, it's a third class tabloid journalism at best. Yellow journalism might be the most accurate word.

Here is why.

The op/ed makes the following conclusion,

"This is what children in classes four and five will study, if Maoist plans are implemented."

on the basis of two references,
(1) the interview with Hisila Yami, and
(2) Annex 4, Education for All-Nepal: Review from a conflict perspective, International Alert, 2006 (Annex 4 is missing from the original paper though)

both of which do not say what is concluded in the op/ed.

The curriculum shown is not a FUTURE plan of Maoist but what they had prepared in the PAST to implement in the are run by their Jana-sarakar in which case too, they were not serious to implement it according to the reference #2.

For the relevant excerpt:

Tony Vaux, Alan Smith, Sirjana Subba
Education for All-Nepal: Review from a conflict perspective
International Alert, March 2006
p. 29-30
- http://www.international-alert.org/publications/getdata.php?doctype=Pdf&id=250

The Maoists have shown little inclination to impose their own curriculum even where schools are firmly under their control. Despite much sensationalism in the press, it seems unlikely that the Maoists have developed a full educational curriculum. Although copies of Maoist schedules for military training have been published, sometimes under the title of ‘Maoist curriculum [42], these do not seem to be a substitute for normal education. High level statements indicate that the main focus of Maoist education is ‘to spread literacy among the masses’ and there is a strong emphasis on ‘practical and vocational education [43]. But this does not seem to be supported by practical action. The most common impact of Maoist activity is to ensure that teachers attend regularly, under threat of dire consequences. In Sankhuwasabha District there is reported to be a parallel Maoist ‘School Management Committee’ for each school. It seems that their purpose is to oversee the official committee and promote wider accountability.

Nepe ji, you got it. That is what exactly my feelings were. Ansu provides great articles most of the times, but recently what I have seen are "birodh ko laagi birodh" and "samarthan ko laagi birodh". No matter what we believe in, we must try to get to the bottom of it. It will set us free.

Nepe and Mr Truth,

Thanks for your DIFFERENT perspectives, which -- as Nepe can well appreciate -- only a forum that is as self-confident and as open
and as truly democratic in a "we the people" manner as Sajha can
allow with no self-styled chest-thumping democrats stroking
their chins over who posts what and who offends whom . . .

That said,I find this intriguing:

a) Hisila Yami, a top-ranked Maoist netri says X in a major
national newspaper in March 2007. As someone who has first-hand knowledge of how negatively are some schools and students are
affected by the Maoists in Nepal, I, for one, find what she says
to be truly scary for the future of Nepal.

b) International Alert, an international INGO, says Y in March 2006,
a year earlier, when the Maoists were still, well, underground or
when the times were different.

Nepe says we should have faith in (b), and not worry too much about what Maoists will do.

I say, unless we think Yami -- Baburam's missus -- is simply
an idiotic puppet, we should take her words seriously enough
to start countering them publicly.

For who really knows what the future holds?

And the best way to prepare for ANY future is NOT to start
wishing that things will not happen this way or that way, but
to honestly look at all possibilities and start crafting responses
so that when the future arrives, in any shape or size, the levels
of surprises remain low.

*****

On a slightly different note, I anticipated glimpses of Maoist curriculum in a different, alebit comedic, setting:

"ECONOMICS 345: The Subtleties of Maoist Thought

The karya-kartas of CPN-Maoist have threatened to burn down our school if we don't offer this advanced course. So we have no choice but to teach this course. This course, conducted by a comrade whose name we can't divulge, will teach you the guerilla tactics that you need to survive in corporate jungle. Learn how to call up company-wide bandhs and hartaals when you don't get what you want. Master ways to cadge free dinners and lunches from villagers, and extort money from salary-wallahs. Know how to.call your bosses "You, reactionary dogs" every time they worry about markets and profits. Yes, free market in this course really means free market, as everything is available for free. Extra motivated students will be taught the fine art of looting banks and the houses of capitalist fat cats who wallow in their bourgeoisie squalor."

I support ashu

After knowing Maoists for 15 years now, we should all be very catious on what they do. They say one thing and do/implement something stictly commie type.

For instance even after joining multiparty system, Prachanda keeps stressing - "Our ultimate goal is to establish hardcore communism in Nepal, and this is just a step towards achieveing that".

I am very suspecious about their moves these days and I still think such curriculum might be implemented in future if the current trend of maoist behavior continues.

Maoists announce sweeping reforms in the education system
=====================================================
Street sweeper comrade Jhaduwala proposed to use the following detergent to clean the dirt in our bourgeoise education system.
(1) The universal law of dialectic materialism will replace all principles. For example, the economic law of supply and demand will be called the dialectic between buyer (oppressed) and seller (oppressor) if the seller is a private corporation. The law of gravitation must be interpreted in a similar manner. The earth represents the invincible power of all proletariats. That's why it is capable of attracting all objects towards its center.
(2) The integral symbol used in calculus in a bourgeoise symbol introduced by such capitalists as Newton and Leibnitz. It must be replaced by revolutionary hammer and sickle logo to emphasize the collective integral power of communist ideology.
(3) The sigma (summation) notation was originally the capital letter M (as a reminder of our great leader Mao). The Greek reactionary forces tilted and made it Sigma. we want this letter to stand on its feet and not on its head or hand.

Soon comrade daaduwala will announce his reforms for food technology. Keep your fist and fingers hammered and sickled! You have nothing to lose but your head.

I find people like Mr.Truth and Nepe to be too Optimistic.
well there is nothing wrong being optimistic but like as i always say being optimistic is good attribute but without solid understanding and right base would do no one good.
This proverb really defines people optimisism" Doko ma dudh " hey unless it is plastic doko for Nepe ..:D

Small children should never be taught anything related to politics. Once they grow up, they will themselves realize what field they are interested in. BUT, I never see the likes of Ashu say anything about our Mahendra mala education that teaches to praise the king and his chamachas. Why dont you guys voice that concern ? I remebmer in class 6, we were taught a course which had one chapter for each of the Shah king from Prithivi Narayan to King Birendra. It was a pure propganda course. And in even lower classes, we were taught variuos poems that taught how great our kings are and so on. I have never heard any opposition from the likes of Ashu on this regard. so i take his current ranting as a mere political thing.

MadDog, I am a complete nepali from head to toe. And FYI, we are nepali not bcoz the Kings told us, but just because we are nepali. Nepal is nepal because of nepali people not because of kings. There is no fundamental difference between the propaganda of the Mahendra mala education and teh proposed Maoists education. Both try to brainwash people. If the proposed maoist education is really implemented (which I highly doubt), then few decades down the road we will see that we have our country nepal because of Maoists just like the Mahendra mala education has brainwashed many people like MadDog who think that nepal's existence is because of the kings.
