are you wearing that Jeans, not suruwal? Why the T-shirt, not a Daura? Where's your Dhaka topi? And while we are at it, why are you typing in english, not Devnagari?

Bunch of people want to come together, play music and have fun, why does it matter what music they play? I can understand if it was a celebration of some national patriotic day, or a celebration sponsored by our government. I didn't watch the video but the thumbnail looks like a private function. Who are we to tell them what music they should be playing?

Maybe it is about time to guide your "Nationalism" or "Patriotism" towards nation building than finding issues with the language of a party song, or caring what Hritik Roshan said.

Kiddo, loved your response. I feel sorry for people suffering from "misplaced patriotism syndrome".

First things they need to do in life - is to get their priorities straight!

Music is universal. Why does it matter what kind of music others enjoy? If it bothers you that much then stick to Nepali songs when you throw your own party.

Btw, nice response, kiddo! :)

Music is a cultural symbol and a link that runs through all the human beings. If I were to only judge this in terms of culture/human interaction, the I would agree with what kiddo said. But truth as we know is much more complicated than this.

In the current geo-political status-quo, the single most threat to our national sovereignty and territorial integrity is from our southern neighbor. With every passing month and year, I see a dilution of Nepalese culture and increasing "Indianization". It might well be the product of our shortcomings in this and other areas but it is a disturbing trend none-the-less. I am not trying to blame India in this regard, in fact, they are to be celebrated for their artistic ability that permeates through many international boundaries. The question here in is, why cannot we create something that can be enjoyed within our border so as not to have to rely on others for having fun in such simple everyday events as birthdays/gatherings.

Art is a very powerful thing. It can bring group of people together like no other. Countries have used it as a means of creating a sphere of influence for ages. There are numerous examples of this throughout history. If we just think of this as having just one dimension, then we are surely to be mistaken.

I see your point Sajha_guru. But you yourself provided a sentence that supports what we've been saying and counters possibly your stand.

I am all up for Nepali consumption, but I vehemently am against limiting choices and censorship. If I hear a jhyaure song from today's youth, I might feel proud for him but if he drops hip hop beats, I am not going to sanction him for that. You cannot force nationalism/patriotism to an individual, it should be a choice. Without the choice it is dictatorship.

You said, "why cannot we create something that can be enjoyed within our border?.."that's the answer to this issue. If something good is created, it will be played. I am sure you have heard many nice Nepali musics in various gatherings, they are played because they are well made. If our neighbor makes a good music, we will enjoy that too. So the solution is to create better music, not censor others.

Art can bring people together, but focus of art should be free from all agendas. It shouldn't be a propaganda tool. Create nice musics, people will play it. Censoring didn't work and will not work. It will only create rifts towards everybody else who is not Nepali.

There are many HINDI speaking communities in southern Nepal itself. We cannot simply have such anti Indian sentiments that we deny the rights of Nepali citizens themselves.

It is one thing to oppose any particular Indian government policies, but totally unnecessary and uncalled for to oppose anything Indian just for being Indian.

Like Kiddo and others said above, freedom of choice is an important part of being human and it is not a matter of national achievement to have to listen to Nepali music or have to eat Nepali food to show that you love your country.

At the same time as there are objections to listening to hindi music, it is baffling that there is rarely any objection to dancing to English music! If listening to Indian music is considered Indianization, then shouldn't listening to English music be considered 'Americanization'? But, wait, Americanization is sometimes held synomously with modernization, and as a nation it is better to move to modernization than to hang onto your roots and discourage any new trends.

I think, as a nation of intelligent people, we need to put aside simplistic knee jerk reactions to simple matters of individual choice and focus on bigger problems such as why politicians are not doing anything to make Nepalis' lives better, why the law of the land is totally undependable, and there are many other whys to consider..l

I was not trying to take sides on this issue because frankly, I see good points on both sides.

Would I love to see good Nepali songs being played on all Nepali gatherings? Of course.
Would I force people into listening Nepali music? Of course not.

I personally have not watched a Hindi movie or listened to Hindi songs in over a decade but that is my personal preference. That being said, I also do not listen to Nepali music or watch Nepali movies either. Why? We come back to the same conclusion -- there simply is not a good alternative. This seems to be the point of our agreement.

As I was trying to point out, the issue of Hindi songs/art, is but just one facet in a larger geo-political context of our country. In a ideal world, art would be free of agendas/propaganda but if we look back at the history, this has never largely been true on matter of every significance.

So, the solution, also another of our point of agreement, on both this issue would be to create our own art/music that can be enjoyed by ours and hopefully others around the world.

@ neo, in my view Indianization is more dangerous than Americanization to us atm because of the significance of our geological location.

@bathroom - As I said in my above post, countries around the world have used art/music to expand their sphere of influence throughout history. So, looking at the bigger picture, the geo-political status-quo has everything to do with art in general and music specifically.

So according to the logic provided by Sajha_guru if you eat too many burritos you might end up Mexican, if you watch too many japanimation you might end up Japanese, or listen to too many hip hop music you might end up in the ghetto... lol !! C'mon mang... I mean if one wants to listen to music from TIMBUKTU what is it to you ? No need for paranoia..

Our cooking gas, petroleum, Maruti cars, TATA trucks, bicycle, motorcycles, roads and dams are all either made/built or imported from India. Not only Indian music are played in Nepal but also played in Zumba classes in US (sang by Daler Mehndi). United States never oppose if we hang our Nepali flag on roof of our house. Are Americans less patriotic ?
