Hi all,
Do you have any good books in mind? I plan to read some good books during this christmas break since I have nothing else to do. I just finished reading "Purple Hibiscus" by this Nigerian writer and am about to start "Things fall apart" by Chinua Achebe who is also a very good Nigerian writer. I like to read books when someone else recommends it to me. So, your suggestions are highly welcome.

Hey, I made a list of foreign books recommended by some people at "Pustak" section of "Nepal" to read during break. I know that I won't be able to complete it. But I've read some books referred through that section. I never regret reading these books. So you might like to check that site.

You may like to check the archives for other issues. Most of the time, they recommend same kind of book n' all craps. I'm sorry but they recommend books like 'bhagwad gita' or other bad indian writers. But I've got a chance to read some really good books through that recommendations, and also be careful to follow recommendation of their book according to their personality. I don't want you to turn out to be a communist by reading some crap. So I warn you not to follow the recommendation of people like Mr. B.B. Bhattarai, some crooked government officials or other crooked people. I screen the books on my own way, and I chose the books very selectively before I decide to open hundreds of pages.

have you read bhagwat gita? just wondering if you have then you are entitled to your opinion but if you haven't then you shouldn't make judgements.

I'm sorry if i hurt any1 by saying this. I had plan to read the bhagwad gita earlier, but i couldn't make it. However, I watched the serials like ramayan n' mahabharat n' guess that i'm familiar with the story. But we've already discussed about the negative impacts of such serials on kids on nepal (on some earlier threads).

Currently, I've no plan to read any religious texts as bhagwad gita or swasthani or bibles or any others. I'm neither atheist nor agnostic. But I still find myself religious.

well read this book just recenlty..."The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, Aged 13 3/4" by Sue Townsend...

its thin!!hehe..and pretty funny...a day read for most..tho it took me quite a while hehe..so if u can get hold of the book somehow..well try it..u just might enjoy it as much as i did...try and believe re kya ;o) hehe,...and well thanks to u..just found out that there are more books about Adrian mole!!WOOHOO!!now how the hell am i gonna get them?:oS (i dun buy..well i try not to..since i dun really read :oS hehe)

and oh yah...one fren of mine who is an avid reader..well loves this book called the " The Fountainhead" by Ayn Rand ...im kinda lookin for it too...u might wanna try that too if u havent hehe..la la enuf of typing..

Gita is quite different from mahabharat even though it is in it. mahabharat is an epic where as Gita is more like a philosophical discussion. however i do not recommend taking every word of it literally. we all have our own brains and let that be above any religious texts.

I agree with anon about Fountain Head by Ayn Rand. What a book? Fall in love with the character Howard Roark.. mero type re kya :). Huna ta suru ma Prof. ley similar profession ko lagi must read bhanya bhayera padhe.. tara pachi pheri padhe ani saar lagyo.. beautifully written.
If you are interested in classics, Joseph Conrad's selected short stories are good too. Enjoyed reading Arundhati Roy's God of Small Things too. I have been reading this book called Memoirs of Geisha lately. So far so good.. I will go watch this movie only after i finish reading this book.

Alister Mclean[ hms ulyssess, guns of navrone, where the eagles dare, force 10 from navrone]
Tom Clancy[ hunt for red october, executive decision, without remorse, cardinal of kremlin, clear and present danger, teeth of a tiger]
Vince Flynn[ memorial day, consent to kill, transfer of power, third option, executive power]
Mario Puzo[ the godfather, the sicilian, omerta, the dark arena, fools die]
Steinbeck [ of mice and men; the wrath of grapes]

As I am a big for sci-fic, anything by Stephan Baxtar, notably Raft, The Ring, The Timeships, and the Manifold series. Can be a little hardcore, but incredibly thought provoking stuff.

The Nights Dawn trilogy by Peter F. Hamilton. Gets a little wacky toward the end, but a great story with enough science to stop it getting way out of hand.

Anything by Vernor Vinge is also great, especially A Deepness in the Sky.

The Ender Wiggin Saga by Orson Scott card is also intruiging, especially if you have any interest in psychology.

If you like your sci-fi with a military bent, you can't go past David Drake. Cross The Stars and Red Liners were great!

The Wreck of the River Of Stars, by Michael Flynn. A rich, if somewhat depressing story, of the lives of the crew of a converted stellar sail ship. Centered on the humanistic, yet again with the science (bring on the science!)... Worthwhile reading.

To be honest, I have read so much sci-fi over the years, I actually find it difficult to seperate individual books from the clutter in my head. :D

I have read that book by Chinua Achebe, Things Fall Apart, its his masterpiece. You should read MADAM BOVARY by Floubert. Its the best book ever. He is a very good writer. Thats his masterpiece. Im sure you will love it.

Ohhh.. you all have been so helpful. :) I will try to get some of the books that you have suggested. They all sound interesting. Btw, I was about to start the book by Chinua Achebe but I found this another interesting book by Jhumpa Lahiri called "the namesake". I think i will read that first.

Thanks for your wonderful suggestions but I am not much into sci-fi books. I like books that talk about history and different social issues. I read this book called "A small place" by Jamaica Kincaid. I loved that book. But anyways, I will suggest your books to someone who's into sci-fi.

The Godfather and The Sicilian by Mario Puzo were great, although I do not know how The Sicilian would fare in my taste now.

Almost about a decade ago, I tried Fountain Head by Ayn Rand, but stop after couple of dozen pages. My friend, who was a voracious reader, swore by it. I wonder why I never got back to it.

But frankly speaking, anything beyond 5 pages bores me to death, with the exception of:

1) Sports related article or news.
2) Some crispy piece of article on current matters.
3) Humor pieces.

Rest, kaam pa chaina? Yeso mojj sojj garnu chadera yetro 20 barsa padera ajai feri kitab. Tyo pani yeuta duita ho. Lekhna payo bhandai ma library nai padya jasto lekhdine manche haru feri. Hehe , yeuta kura ni ;).

Okay Dutchy_bunch, listen. Forget all the recommendation and all these fancy writers and "read me" books. You want to smile and throw in coupe of mirthful chuckles? Want to understand the misery of a man and what his intimate thoughts are. Do you want to travel thru one man's life, not in some artistic form or some fancy complicatedly woven yarn, but something very close to our miserable existence?

Then, read "High Fidelity." 'It is humorous, poignant and has informative look at men, relationships and love.' Sounds familiar eh'? Just read it and you would never know how the pages disappear one after another.

And at the end of the day, the greatest compliment for the book is, you will never hate men, if you have ever; you will simply pity them.

Read it. It is relatively small and promises WONDERFUL time. If you have already read it, oh well, why the hell did you not wrote the books you are actually done with in the beginning itself. Dammit! ;)
