Marwari community wants their representation in interim parliament

Marwari community has also demanded their share in the forthcoming interim parliament, which is to be formed after the promulgation of interim constitution.

Speaking at the national convention of Nepal National Marwari Council, its acting chairman Atma Ram Murarka said that the community, too, has decided to enter into politics and demanded at least two seats for the community in the interim legislature.

Deputy Prime Minister Amik Sherchan, addressing the concluding session of the council, assured the representation of Marwari community in the interim parliament.

Marwari community is a leading business community of the country.

The interim parliament has been proposed to include 330 members – 48 of whom will be nominated to represent various organisations and communities. nepalnews.com sd Jan 06 07

Captain,

I wouldn't say detrimental to the "credibility of democracy". I mean our democracy as it stands now is "under construction". So, theoretically at least, it's too early to question it.

However, the delay is already proving detrimental to the situation of "law and order" and "ethics of professional groups". After Jana-andolan, we were supposed to have an all powerful government and an improved situation of law and order and some kind of patience and co-operation from the professional groups to the government accordingly. What we see is the opposite and for a very understandable reason.

The legitimacy of the government of SPA is incomplete without support/participation of the Maoists. It is this semi-legitimacy that has compromised the authority of the government. This hopefully will change once the Maoists join the government.

However, coming days won't be easy. Koirala and Prachanda have two different resolve for Nepal and Prachanda now will have both the government and the PLA (cantonment hardly matters) to bargain with.

Just sharing a quick rumination on the delayed peace process.

This definitely is due primarily to Koirala's naivety that he can have his cake and eat it too (keep monarchy and disarm the Maoists too). However, I also wonder about our collective contribution. Some months ago, I had talked about what I would like to describe as "destination-phobia".

Here was my explanation:

I wonder if our collective destination-phobia is contributing to all kinds of delay we are seeing.

To say that the Marwaris (read: so-called Indians) will
end up controlling the rest of us in Nepal, if given even
a slightest chance, is to have zero confidence and no
faith in our own abilities to do business and thrive in Nepal and beyond.

Sure, there are "bad" Marwaris, just as there are, well, "bad" bahuns or "bad" Chettris or "bad" Newars (however one defines "bad") everywhere.

But so what?

The good exists with the bad everywhere, and that's human nature.

Just because Nepali jails are -- intriguingly -- filled with janajati men and women does NOT mean that therefore all janjatis are criminals, some Marwaris' "crimes" here and there do NOT mean that therefore ALL Marwaris are to
be avoided in the process of today's nation-building work.

If anything, based on my experience in Nepal and with both Nepali and Marwari businesspeople in Nepal and elsewhere,
I dare say that more and more Nepalis need to learn from the Marwaris:

a) the virtues of being hardworking,
b) being savvy about running profitable businesses in a focussed manner,
c) employing Nepali professionals and workers,
d) being thrifty and frugal in one's daily life,
e) being community-oriented,
f) looking out for the welfare of the poorest sections of one's community, and so on and on.

Let's not forget that some of the world's savviest business people -- the Europe-based Indian steel tycoon Mr. Mittal included -- are Marwaris.

That said, we all know that the present-day Nepali state is made up of many 'nations': bahuns, chettris, newars, rais, gurungs, marwaris, raute, tharus sherpas and so on and on. This is our reality.

Better to use the strengths of each Nepal-based ethnic group in times ahead than to engage in some paranoia-filled divide-and-rule politics.

Personally, I am impressed with some Marwari youths who hold Nepali citizenships that I meet in Nepal.

They are well-educated, well-travelled, well spoken, smart, getting into new lines of businesses which demand for transparency and better accounting rules to attract investments, and, most of all, can laugh at themselves
for being, well "maday" in Nepal.

My INFORMAL advice to my younger brothers once: Hang out with the smartest kids in your class, for you'll learn more from them than from the teachers.

Likewise, my INFORMAL advice to younger Nepali businesspeople: Hang out with smartest Marwaris that you can find in Nepal, for for you'll learn more from them than from your MBA courses.

Well said, Ashu. I too am all for fair and proper representation of all people.

If Madwari Nepalis are denied representation today, for one nefarious reason or the other, who will they deny representation to tomorrow? Sherpas? Kaami-Damai-Podeys? Chamaars? Tharus? Tamangs? Rais? Limbus? Bhutias? <> NBCs (Newar Bahun Chettri)? Heck NO!!!

I want my Nepal to be the model of democracy where all its people are equal and deservedly get full protection and representation (and taxation, I might add).

If you are a citizen then you have all the rights, privileges and obligations of the citizenship, period. Your race, sex, religion, ethnicity should not be an issue here. If you disagree with this basic tenet of citizenship, you are stupid ignorant jackass with wannabe KKK redneck tendencies.

Yeah you heard me.

If you disagree with this basic tenet of citizenship, you are stupid ignorant jackass with wannabe KKK redneck tendencies.

" Better to use the strengths of each Nepal-based ethnic group in times ahead than to engage in some paranoia-filled divide-and-rule politics. "

Ashu - My thoughts exactly! I am sometimes amazed at the looser mindset some of us bring to Sajha - we just seem to relish being victims no matter what the issue.

Good to see you around on Sajha. I read your blog on reading Nepali literature and your article in the Nepali times "Loving the Neighbors". Great write-ups - both of them - there is a lot of food for thought and call for action in both those articles.

"better to use the strenghts of each Nepal-based ethenic group in times ahead than to engage in some paranoia-filled devide -and -rule politics." Well said Ashuji and Captain Haddock it is quite frustrating to see you play a dahi chiure role at times. I support the Marwadi's too and they do deserve a place in the government after all they are an integral part of how our country runs." We were always united as char jaat chatish barna eutai fulbari," before and now we are seeing that every jan jati wants their own identity, why is that so???? the present situation is already deviding the nation, don't play it innocent you know very well and this problem will widen more and gets worse. You all should realise that our country is not ready for such a big change as the saying goes "cut your coat according to the cloth" or "ghati herera haddi nilnu"i We are still not ready to do away with the king like it or not and definitely not in exchange for Maoists have some compasssion for your own country. jai Nepal!!!

Dimple - Obviously you and I approach the issue of the monarchy from two very different angles. To one of your points, I think we are ready for a republic. I don't know if you want to start a discussion here on the pros and cons of this but there have been plenty of other thread on this subject including some on which I have commented and most of arguments of both sides have been covered in those threads.

As for ethnic aspirations, when will we be ready for it, if not now? Kathmandu's power elites have for too long marginalized those who do not look like them or talk like them or think like them. We are living in historic times and Nepal is undergoing a major restructuring of state of society. Giving room for ethnic ambitions does not necessarily mean losing your national identity - on the contrary, it means changing it, and beginning to think about nationalism in more inclusive way than what some of us are used to.

O.K Madddog, read a lot about the news. But realize that there is a serious problem with monarchy. He United Nepal, definitely YES. But talk about the rulers after Prithvi Narayan Shah, did anyone do any good. And in this 21st century to put a tyrrant monarch and a mad prince, I guess only a hardcore royalist like you will support. What if the monarchy is included in fuelling those riots like in Nepalganj? already his henchmans in the Name of Biswa hindu or something had done same thing in birgunj.

I come from Nepal and am equally proud if not more than you of being a nepali.

Everyone who claims to be a Nepali should be proud to be one irrespective of the fact whether they are bahun, chhetri, Newaar, gurung, tamang or magar etc. etc. We should consider ourselves worthy nepalese only when we can accept everyone living in Nepal as fellow citizens regardless of their caste and creed. It is their deeds that makes them worthy or otherwise not their caste. comeon people we shouldn't forget our roots and if we do so we will collapse just like a big tree would fall if the roots were pulled out likewise the king is also our roots and without him Nepal will fall in the hands of a herd of hyena's hungry to gobble what remains. The Jungle is better off with the Lion as a king so is Nepal betteroff with Gynendra as the leader. I really don't trust the present set of so called leaders to lead nepal. This is how i feel as a loyal Nepali humble in all ways. I support maddogg too!!

"The Jungle is better off with the Lion as a king so is Nepal better off with Gynendra as the leader."

Dimple -

Would you be offended if I said wake up and smell the coffee! In case you didn't notice, he almost lost his throne, had it not been for that "hyena" you might call Girija Prasad Koirala who, for reason's Nepe and others are unlikely to forgive, delayed the inevitable and saved him his crown for the moment.

Many royalists have accepted the new reality in Nepal, and have their feet closer to the ground on the future role of monarchy. I think expectations like the one you expressed is what got the Monarchy into the deep trouble that it is in now and will only sink it deeper if King Gyanedra seeks to fulfill them.
