Nepal Celebrates it's Democracy Day Amidst Chaos

The fifth anniversary democracy day celebration was marred by the bombs set off in various parts of the capital today. Bombs were deployed in strategic locations such as the District Court of Patan, Kathmandu Nagar Palika and outside of Singha Durbar. The casualties have not been clarified by the government but according to bystanders and witnesses there could have been about 120 dead and about 250 injured in these incidents. Home minister Hom Raj was not available for comments.

The Democracy day celebrations planned for the evening however went on without any incidents. The five hour program was held at the Deepak Bista Memorial Hall. Prime Minister Khagendra Thapa was there to precide over the event. During his speech no mention was made of the atrocities which happened earlier today.

In retrospect, five years after the trade blockade from US and India which began in May 2005, the will of the people won the autocratic regime resulting in an all out democracy by the people, for the people and to the people. The nation of Nepal finally breathed the air of democracy on May 20, 2010.

As predicted by few liberals, the transition period from Monarchy to a Democratic Government was not smooth. As soon as the King stepped down, the different underground parties raised their heads. The same of names resurfaced on the horizon of the newly found democratic government. In spite of the majority disliking the same old names, because of party politics, the Koiralas came back into the political mainstream. Right after the king stepped down, there was so much chaos in the streets and the capital that a curfew had to be slapped for two consecutive months. Despite general popularity within the people of the valley, the army still had loyalty to the royals. The royals leaving the scene to an unspecified location created misplaced loyalties within the army camps and the law makers resulting in an uncertain political and social atmosphere which is believed to have cost over 3,000 lives in the capital alone.

Finally when an actual cabinet was formed, they had to start with an emergency rule - restricting press freedom and freedom of movement, which the Prime Minister termed "for the sake of national security and democracy". In fact there was no other way the country could come to a flow of regular life unless these emergency rules were set.

As normal flow of life returned, the Maoist problem resurfaced with such intensity that few members of the new government practically had to run for cover to India. In 2013 three ministers of the Nepali government were targeted by the Maoists and a public list was available which cited five more ministers being in the HitList. Those named all decided to take refuge in neighboring India. The Maoist insurgents had created huge bases in the capital itself threatening to overthrow the government. As the social bond grew weaker with Party politics and fight for power, the Maoists have become very strong seeping into the capital.

In spite of the democratic movements promises of taking over all parts of Nepal into one democratic country, there was never any attempts even to hold talks with the Maoists. The Maoists were not willing to have talks and the internal politics did not leave room for the decision makers to focus too far from their own bases.

After 5 years of democracy today Nepal is a failed state. In a country where the biological and physiological needs of people such as food, drink, shelter, water, etc. has not been met for a huge percentage of people, the ideals of Democracy rarely seeps into fulfilling these needs.

The incidents of today throws uncertain doubts in the mind of democracy lovers about the feasibility and practicality of democracy in Nepal. It seems like it's only a matter of time till the Maoist insurgency claim the capital and throws Nepal into another 200 years of communist regime.

So how do you assume that Nepal will be nothing after the Royals are taken out. Assumption comes from History. History shows that KINGS are not needed anymore for any country to be ruled.

In anycase that question is there for any democracy fighter. Don't get into pages after pages of ideal scenarios. Just the initial transision of power. HOW are you hoping to manage that?

You guys have tried to invoke me but I'd not belittle myself by arguing with you any more. You could rejoice of victory only if your comments had changed my stance, which unfortunately for you, has strengthened day by day. Nevertheless, you can celebrate if you think you have won.The problem with the monarchists are they are very complacent about people liking them, which in fact is not true(the size of pro-monarchist program demonstrates it).

To answer Saroj's question, my initial thoughts were not abt. ousting monarchy. Refer to 'Thinking sensibly and impartially' . I had urged for a positive role from the King to promote and strengthen democracy.A monarchy which accepts to be the heritage of the nation just like in England. But when King pushes for dictatorship, there is no reason for us to quest for a middle ground. If dictatorship is King's venture, there is nothing sinister about ending the tradition of monarchy. King is going the dictatorial way.

The latest attempt is an ammendment of the existing media laws enforcing total censorship in media. This is not abt. taping the journalists' mouth, this is about blocking Nepalese people from being informed; a move only the dictators resort to protect their sins from being exposed.The monarchy is irresponsible and your question what if the KIng flees is in itself marred with dubious irresponsibilities. First, the monarchy could have stayed on as a positive democratic institution. Secondly, if it doesn't want to stay in the domain, a proper handover/transition of power could have been their responsibility. Thirdly, if the King flees irresponsibly, there will certainly be some kind of vaccum but I am sure that will be shortlived. The King won't leave unless the public storm into Narayanhiti. By then, political parties can work out a contingency plan to fill the vacuum.International community, UN etc can help in some way until the situation is stabilized if anything unpleasant really happened.But I won't think it will be so messy. See how Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Ukraine, Ivorycoast got through recently.

You see, the world is very dynamic and no single people or a single group is indespensible for the contunuation of this dynamism. A couple of centuries ago, the whole world was ruled by Kings and Emperors. Now a dozen or so are remained.Very soon none may exist. Inherited rule is not a scientifically proven ideology. Hence, Nepal can do very well without monarchy. The world has carried on with so many upheavels and mayhem, there's no reason that Nepal can't cope without monarchy.

I hope this answers your questions. Now, I would not like to discuss with you because this has not at all been fruitful in broadening my political horizon. Therefore, I'd not like to waste my precious time arguing with you now. Well, let me admit that I may have less political knowledge than some of the people debating in this thread, but I am in no way bound by it. I like to broaden my knowledge and like to engage myself in a thoughtful discussions, seeing things from different angles is one of the ways, which you have shown time and again that it is not your cup to tea. Anyway what good does it do to have an unlimited and unblurred political knowledge if you are as stubborn as an ox.

Man you seriously need to broaden your horizons. You are basing all your faith in IFs and BUTs. IF everything would work fine then you wouldn't be having this discussion. IF things would go perfectly then of course Saroj and everyone else who are discussion with you would support democracy. They are just trying to say that it is very likely that democracy in nepal is not going to take place the way you think it should.

Tell me someone who doesn't know that the politicians are corrupt in Nepal. They are all there to make money. There is only one icon that is stopping them from looting our motherland Nepal. The very existence of the King stops them from plundering Nepal.

So it is in their best interest to get rid of monarchy so that they can plunder the country and take the most advantage.

Mark my word, the politicians who want to get rid of the king only wants to do so because the king stands in the way of thier selfish motives which is to squeeze as much money as they can when they are in power and then leave.

Although everything surrounding the King is negative and he has taken full advantage of his royalty, he is better than the politician who have nothing to lose besides taking advantage of their time in power and then getting the hell out of there.

People need to realize this sooner than later. In the name of democracy these politicians are using the general population to attain their inner motives which is to gain power then riches then get the hell out of there leave the country in ruins.
