Nepal Celebrates it's Democracy Day Amidst Chaos

The fifth anniversary democracy day celebration was marred by the bombs set off in various parts of the capital today. Bombs were deployed in strategic locations such as the District Court of Patan, Kathmandu Nagar Palika and outside of Singha Durbar. The casualties have not been clarified by the government but according to bystanders and witnesses there could have been about 120 dead and about 250 injured in these incidents. Home minister Hom Raj was not available for comments.

The Democracy day celebrations planned for the evening however went on without any incidents. The five hour program was held at the Deepak Bista Memorial Hall. Prime Minister Khagendra Thapa was there to precide over the event. During his speech no mention was made of the atrocities which happened earlier today.

In retrospect, five years after the trade blockade from US and India which began in May 2005, the will of the people won the autocratic regime resulting in an all out democracy by the people, for the people and to the people. The nation of Nepal finally breathed the air of democracy on May 20, 2010.

As predicted by few liberals, the transition period from Monarchy to a Democratic Government was not smooth. As soon as the King stepped down, the different underground parties raised their heads. The same of names resurfaced on the horizon of the newly found democratic government. In spite of the majority disliking the same old names, because of party politics, the Koiralas came back into the political mainstream. Right after the king stepped down, there was so much chaos in the streets and the capital that a curfew had to be slapped for two consecutive months. Despite general popularity within the people of the valley, the army still had loyalty to the royals. The royals leaving the scene to an unspecified location created misplaced loyalties within the army camps and the law makers resulting in an uncertain political and social atmosphere which is believed to have cost over 3,000 lives in the capital alone.

Finally when an actual cabinet was formed, they had to start with an emergency rule - restricting press freedom and freedom of movement, which the Prime Minister termed "for the sake of national security and democracy". In fact there was no other way the country could come to a flow of regular life unless these emergency rules were set.

As normal flow of life returned, the Maoist problem resurfaced with such intensity that few members of the new government practically had to run for cover to India. In 2013 three ministers of the Nepali government were targeted by the Maoists and a public list was available which cited five more ministers being in the HitList. Those named all decided to take refuge in neighboring India. The Maoist insurgents had created huge bases in the capital itself threatening to overthrow the government. As the social bond grew weaker with Party politics and fight for power, the Maoists have become very strong seeping into the capital.

In spite of the democratic movements promises of taking over all parts of Nepal into one democratic country, there was never any attempts even to hold talks with the Maoists. The Maoists were not willing to have talks and the internal politics did not leave room for the decision makers to focus too far from their own bases.

After 5 years of democracy today Nepal is a failed state. In a country where the biological and physiological needs of people such as food, drink, shelter, water, etc. has not been met for a huge percentage of people, the ideals of Democracy rarely seeps into fulfilling these needs.

The incidents of today throws uncertain doubts in the mind of democracy lovers about the feasibility and practicality of democracy in Nepal. It seems like it's only a matter of time till the Maoist insurgency claim the capital and throws Nepal into another 200 years of communist regime.

Signing off Saroj Nepal.

Newuser, you said, "You think , we the people, are not strong enough to put the King and the politicians under control."

Are you sure? I doubt that.
Let's face it, at the present situation, Nepal lacks people with genuine leadership skills. The last half of 15 years of democracy was the perfect launch-pad for anyone who sees himself/herself as a true leader and has just one intention, serve the nation and its people to come out and make a change. During those times, nepali people were exhausted by the incompetence of democratic leader to rule the country and were desperately seeking for alternatives in leaders but to everyone's dismay, there were none. Only one or may be two seemed to have stood out, namely Baburam and Prachanda; but they soon turned devils while fighting against the devils.
So newuser, where were the leaders of nepal at that time? And if you meant all those people who participated in the DC rally by saying "we the people," then let me assure you, no they are not strong enough to put the king and the politicians under control. They were not strong enough to abandon the american luxuries and go back to Nepal to protest, they were not strong enough to risk their lives and protest in the streets of Nepal, they were not even strong enough to organize one effective rally to promote Nepali solidarity, let alone unify them against the corrupt politicians, king and the terrorist maoists.
And you my friend, if you think you have the skills, to lead, you are gravely mistaken. You cannot even put forth a convincing arguments in every discussion, instead resort to name calling; you cannot even try to broaden up you mind-set to look at things from different angles, at least from the angle of the ones you are discussing with; how the hell do you think people like you can ignite a successful revolution that will change Nepal for good?

This thread is hilarious! Keep up the good work, kids. You're well on your way to creating India's latest state: Nepal Pradesh. And, to the author, your writing is inconsistent; for example, your mock headline mentions only one blast, but in your very first sentence, you claim more than one blast. I hear Newsweek is hiring, though...

In that case why don't you outline the series of events that will follow once the king flees the country. Practically how is your democratic govt going to get the position of power in order to start governing. Let's not even talk about how they will fight among themselves and how corrupt they are. Put the army into perspective. That's all I ask from you if you have any practical idea on what you are losing your face for.

Newuser with your last post you are beginning to sound more and more like a born again maoist under the name of democracy fighter. :)

Hurray bro, you always miss my point and pick the sundries. Therefore seldom I like to debate with you.
The difference between you and me is you have a wishlist of others to lead Nepal. I say, it's all up to us to make a good leader of ourselves. Each individual citizen making a good leadership of himself/herself so that good political leadership emerge out of us in the longer term. You see Gyanendra, Girija, Makune, Surya Bahadur, Baburam, Prachanda as leaders, I think beyond that. In democratic environment there are chances of good leaders to emerge in the political scenes, bans and restrictions will only block those chances. BTW, I don't intend to be a leader. Here, I am just opposing the royalist propagandas only.
All in all let me emphasize the fact that the spectrum of your political knowledge is blurred and limited. Read more about the history and developments of world politics and democracy to get a better insight. And see how the west has progressed with a free and liberal political structure in contrast to the undeveloped east and Africa where dictatorship is in the reign.

Saroj bro,
You are getting more and more inconsistent now. Read all of your comments. You have labelled me as a crook of the corrupt politicians, as a King's supporter and as a maoist. All in the same thread. In contrast I am always adhering to the fact that you are a royalist.
At least attain some consistency with your allegations, albeit silly.

Did anyone imagine King Birendra to die the way he did? No, still Nepal ran. If your father dies, you still live a life. So don't put shit like what happens when King dies. If he dies, Girija or Saroj or Sajhako raja or Prachanda or Baburam or Pashupati Sumsher or Gagan Thapa or Rajendra Rai or San or me or anyone capable or with enough votes from the people of Nepal will become president or prime minister of Nepal. Then dumbasses like you leave Nepal and never come back. People will then think, oh there is no king, so better be serious about whom we chose or whose ass we need to kick. Nepal does not need to revolve around the obsolete monarchy system anymore.

What happens to Gyane and his clan-- they will make a run for their lives to UK or USA and take asylum, they have already cyphoned all the money to some Swiss account and already have a multi-million pound house in UK (ask previous Ambassoder to UK), where they will live a life in exile.

Newuser, You write as if only you know how things are in Nepal. You undermine dada and saru's knowledge and opinions in this matter simply because you think you know everything and others dont.

That only undermines your democratic ideals. You need to broaden your horizons and think out of the box.

sardarsing, don't you see a political mayhem that will follow when the king and family makes a run out to some other country. How do you suppose the power vacuum is going to get filled? Who is going to have the power to run an election? Who is the army going to support? Do you think the army is going to support any group of people who goes to them and says they're the boss now?

Is that political mayhem ever going to be resolved?

Saroj whenever I point your shortcomings, you come up with an irrelevant comment. I pointed at your inconsistency and you picked saru and dada. Now do you want to understand that I am uninterested to debate on politics with my good old intimate friends. And also with you now. Cause I have done enough harm to shaken your belief on monarchy. अव मलाई जति गाली दिनोस , लांछना लगाउनोस मैले वेवास्ता गर्नेछु। Have fun buddy.

So why not die and leave this world, because to live is so tough. What mayham? What's the mayham going on today. If there is a tumor in your brain, why be scared to remove the tumor (the Royals), of course it will take some time for the pain to go away, but ones gotta live and thats a better life.

Newuser when you're faced with a question you can't answer you resort to name calling or changing topics. I have never labelled you as the crook of the corrupt politicians (try to copy paste the part where I called you that). I called you King's support in sarcasm because everytime you were writing of the king as Lord - ever heard of sarcasm? I called you a born again maoist because your desire is same as maoists which is getting rid of the King the first thing.

Ok now that i've explained to you your query, why don't you answer my question?

sardarsing: good analogy on the tumor. Let me ask you something. If there is a possibility that removing the tumor MIGHT KILL YOU because it is a very COMPLICATED operation, would you opt to get that operation or would you try to manage to survive with the tumor?

I am very keen on reading your answer to this.

sardarsing, i respectfully must insist that you remove my name from the list of potential candidates to run nepal. i have no desire whatsoever to govern that country now or at any time in the future. as you can see, i am faced with enough challenges as regent of my current realm of sajha, in spite of the indefatigueable efforts of my most worthy chancellor, san.

your faithful liege,
sajhakoraja

Answer to your eagar question!

The medicine and technology in health has become so modern these days, you do not hear any country from dying from removing the tumor. Most of the world now lives without the tumor (appendix might be a better analogy), so removing the tumor will kill us might have been true in 18th-19th and even 20th centuary world, but NOT in 21st centuary.

Lets remove the appendix before it blows up and poisons our whole body.

Sardarsing you are assuming that just because the tumor operation is successful for other races and countries that it will be successful on the Nepali. In Nepal the tumor is deep within the brain that if you remove it, either few of your body parts might not be working, or you might get paralyzed. The chance of full recovery is very low.

So you might want to reconsider surgery right now, and try to eat healthy, get lot of oxygen, maybe try some herbal medicines or accupunture. Wait and see for a little while before you jump into the operating table.
