Regarding nepotism in Kathmandu University, there has been number of letters published from the faculties as well as KUPA in e-kantipur (24-27 May). Similarly, there are other write-ups in Nepali languages dailies and weeklies. We, ex graduates of KU, have compiled all these and put them in the following blog;

www.changeinku.blogspot.com

All the graduates and ex-faculteis are welcome to give their opinion. Let us destroy nepotism in KU.

Reforming KU is a noble cause, and there should not be any opposition. That is not the point.

But, infesting KU with political activism will be a dangerous trend difficult to revert. Once it starts to get out of control with politically charged agitation, NC, UML, and now CPN(M) will try to take control of the KU bodies (students, management, and the university system and the senate). This is the reality of our public education sector.

I also heard that the cut off percentage for getting admission to Env. Sc. was lowered when Suresh Raj Sharma's daughter was being admitted. This shows that you don't need to study to do well if your dad is the VC. Rules have no value. If the head of the institution cannot keep up with rules then what do they expect of the product.
Seriously, I never felt like working hard or doing the best of by potential as long as I was there. I did ok but never motivated because there wasn't fair play going around. People scored 4.0 GPA simply because they were more "friendly" to the teachers than others!!! At least half the teachers practised favoritism. I know lot of students worked hard and scored well and I do not mean to undermine them nor the hard work put in by dedicated teachers but when there is lot of hanky panky going around you are bound to give it a thought.

Well said AP98 jee

Now I have a feeling that someone is getting paid to spread the un necessary propaganda ko KU.

Paanko pat changed his name as Gurughantal and again Firefly..........
If you check sajha posting of these names they are opened just for this thread. They have no other sajha posting history before and to my surprise also no reply to any of other sajha posting too.

I know WHY THIS IS HAPPENING? I guess after 3 months the terms of current VC will be over and like those opportunist teachers .......... some obedient son / daughter of "So called Probable candidate of new VC / Registrar" is spreading false propaganda about current VC Dr. Suresh Raj Sharma.
You are saying you are KU's alumni and still you do not know how to respect VC of your own University (by calling names ) then what the hell did you learn in KU? I guess most of your time was wasted smoking weeds behind that bansghari.

I know SURENDRA RAJ KAFLE his trying to his last breath to get VC position of KU. I also know couple of CORRUPTED EDUCATIONIST have eagle's eye on 600 Million worth of KU's current resources.

These probable VC candidate are trying to give Volts to KUPA, the so called teacher's union.
I am telling ya.........after this VC selection time will be over (whoever will be VC) nobody is gonna give any damn to post these propagandas and nobody is reeally gonna think about KUPA. Its all GRAND DESIGN to make "the image of current VC go to hell project".
Again I dont really care from here in US whoever will be next VC but why the hell someone is so interested in " VC's image go down Project"?????????
Regarding KUPA........ Lets see salaray information here:

Experience means teaching experience......... salaray per month

Teaching Assistant (No experience , fresh) NRS 12000
Lecturer (MS plus 0 year experience) NRS 15000
Assitant Professor (MS plus 2-3 years experience) NRS 18500
Associate Professor (I donot know, you guess) NRS 25500 (I know aboiut this)
Professsor (again same) NRS 30000

Hell a alot .....ha???????? ....... stop stop ....... don't forget Dashain peski man....... that worth EXTRA 70% OF YOUR SALARAY

Do you see you have any more complain about job satisfaction..... at least salary wise?......which is first priority anyway...???????
I am telling ya......... all these teachers association....... KUPA....... all these are worthless......... just the birth of a handicapped child of current political scenario of or unlucky country........ sorry for you guys.........

KUian,

Thanks for salary break down. I would appreciate if you break down the job responsibilities also. By this you have highlighted another anomaly in KU structure. I guess that everybody would agree if wages comply with working hours. KU is teaching university and people need to be paid for teaching students with dedication. This way teaching assistant should have been paid more.

Oh, my god, I forgot to mention that teaching assistant in KU is not a teaching assistant, he is a teacher but the post was created to satisfy the ego of sons of registrar when some faculties of same rank told him on face that they were no different from other teachers. Since the son of registrar is in habit of taking everything personally, he was offended by this remark also and then kept on badgering his all powerful dad Sitaram to create this artificial designation.

It again highlights how hapazardly KU has put the system upside down.
Whatever may be the case, if we are to believe in genesis of this "creation of teaching assistant" in KU official hierarchy, we can guess what a NEPOTISM is present in KU.

Family business have always gone down, it will ultimately go down. There are no bitter enemies than your own family. Once, brothers and sisters start their own family.

But, I still beleive that there is a politics in this thread. Someone is paid for the thread.

Dear Sabita Thapajee,
It appears that your request was heeded by KU bloggers especially this one “Additionally, I also humbly request PankoPat to post other competing views on his/her blog to give readers a balanced opinion. www.changeinku.blogspot.com."

Just now I visited this blogsite and I notice that there is this No-KUPA Statement. Whoever might be these bloggers, it is sure that they entertatin every one’s views. I wish Suresh Raj Sharma would have done the same thing. One thing I have never understood in my life so far what is that Fevicol that keeps Suresh Raj Sharma glued with Sitaram Adhikary. We can imagine that either of them only could have been VC or registrar for such along time but not the both. However, with every renewal of vice-chancellorship, which follows manipulations in Executive Committee and Senate and finally Ghurki, Dhamki and Dhak-Dhakku at the concerned ministery, registar is also retained.

If we focus on positive interpersonal relations only, we agree that Suresh Raj Sharma might count on Sitaram due to various reasons. He might have immense faith in Sitaram’s cunningness, manipulations, maneouvers and so on. Personally, such friendships must last for ever. However, in an institution, I think that this is fraught with dangers for the future of the institute. This kind of arrangement is likely to create void in the organizational structure and no leadership would ever emerge effectively. There have been many senior professors, who supported Suresh Raj Sharma and Sitaram Adhikary initially. However, there are now few left with them. And the ones who are left with them are there because they have no other skills except ingratiating themselves with Suresh Raj Sharma and Sitaram Adhikary. We can see that even amongst these boot likcers there are palpable frustrations. Some of them are nursing a grudge that Suresh Raj Sharma is not preparing future leaderships and some of them are heaping curse why Sitaram himself does not clear the path for their progress.

Regardless of these personal feelings of the bootlikcers of Suresh Raj Sharma and Sitaram Adhikary, it is true that Suresh Raj Sharma and Sitaram Adhikary have never promoted any one to assume the mantle of KU. These bootlickers might be thinking that one day they would also get the chance. However, they have forgotten how sinister Suresh Raj Sharma is. Suresh Raj Sharma generally promotes people not to prepare themselves for leadership of KU but for the leadership of the hordes of mandales, opportunists who would sing bhajans in his praise. He wants professors to compete among themselves and find out who is the best bhazan singer.

At the KU blogger’s website, we can see a joint statement from these bhazan mandali and what these bhazan mandali has claimed is no different from some of our friends.

However, today, I like to forward Pradhyapak jee’s article in www.changeinku.blogspot.com

*****************************
Suresh Raj Sharma and Mandale Vice-Chancellorism
*****************************
There seems to be some confusion amongst our freinds on Mr. Suresh Raj Sharma. They have even claimed that they need 100s of people like Suresh Raj Sharma. Whatever may be the case, the fact of the matter is that Suresh Raj Sharma is a mandale in the garb of academician. His round kick on the stomachs of the facutly members of KU and their families by sacking those faculty members make him a legitimate mandale even after the dawn of Lokatantra in Nepal.

Backstabbing a diligent worker of 9 years shows his ruthlessness which is akin to that of Kamal Thapa who managed to spray bullets on innocent protestors via ruthlesssness of Durja Kumar Rai and Madhav Thapa. And there are some subtle differences. Firstly, Kamal Thapa wants to perpetuate servitude of the King Gyanendra, but Suresh Raj Sharma wants to perpetuate his own servitude in Kathamndu University. Secondly, Kamal Thapa employs law and order and Maoist infiltration as excuses, and Suresh Raj Sharma employs so called visionary leadership as an excuse to attack diligent professors.

Friends may claim that these are exceptions, and these alone would not be sufficient. Then, friends must know that the Suresh Raj Sharma of Budhanilkanta High School was no different than Suresh Raj Sharma of Kathmandu University. Way back in 1980s, teachers of Budhanil Kantha Highschool were rendered jobless by Suresh Raj Sharma by labelling them as anti-national, and anti-monarch. Obviously, he was somewhat brazen as that time. And this could be influence of time. Because at that time Kamal Thapa too used to wield Khukuris to intimidate innocent students of TC brazenly. And, in 2063 both Kamal Thapa and Suresh Raj Sharma are so smooth that people generally get carried away by their glib talks.

We may say that these could also be fabricated story. Then, we need to look at how this man called Suresh Raj Sharma is operating. His modus operanding is no different from those of Kamal Thapa, Ramesh Nath Pandey and all other mandales. All these Mandales appreciates king Gyanendra because King Gyanendra provided them with bread and butter and made them powerful. Probity, equity, honesty and civil rights were never taken care of during their reigns because it was also not necessary. What was the most indispensible task in their reign was the perpetuation of King’s regime at the cost of the national harmony, prosperty, peace and democracy.

On the other hand, in Kathmandu University, Suresh Raj Sharma openly demands that all the teachers and other employees must praise him because everybody owes his/her salts’ worth to him. While saying so he has grossly undermined employees’ work for which they are paid and ability of these employees to find job somewhere else. He assumed that people are in KU because of him not because of their ability. How similar mandale mindset works, just compare.

Similarly, his sole purpose in his life is to nurture and continue his obsession with the post of vice chancellor. Therefore, he is ready to perpetuate his own servitude at the cost of academic harmony, prosperity, eqaulity and academic freedom in KU. Like those mandales who distributed money to the journalist to tilt the media in favour of the despotic royal regime, he is hiring all these incompetent relative so that they would always remain in favour of his vice chancellorship.

Apart from this, another mandale trait is also there. And this trait can be understood, if we try to understand what is “Mandale Nationalism.” No need to say, the mandale nationalism conceptualized by king Mahendra was full of contradictions. While raising nationalistic bogey in Nepal, he did not waste his time to sign the treaty of 1965 which compromised national integrity at the Indian hand. His propaganda machinery at that time labelled every democratic leader from B.P. Koirala to Pushpa Lal as anti-national and he tried to fool entire spectrum of Nepalese by presenting himself as the sole saviour of the nation. The saviour, who does not hesitate to kneel down before the big brother, while accusing all the opponents of the surrendering to India. This singular action of King Mahendra gave birth to Mandale nationalism and the sole purpose of this nationalism is definitely to perpetuate his reign in Nepal at any cost.

No body has understood it better than Suresh Raj Sharma because he emulated King Mahendra and perfected the art of mandale nationalism by giving birth to “Mandale Vice-Chancellorism” in Kathmandu University. Like King Mahendra’s mandale nationalism, his Mandale Vice-Chancellorism accuses every other professor of lacking in academic spirit while he himself is busy destroying the academic spirit of Kathmandu University by imposing rampant, widespread, top-down nepotism in KU.

He claims that all other professors are incompetent to be vice-chancellor of KU, while he employs only his incompetent relatives in KU so that his competency would never be challenged. He talks and brags about academic freedom and autnomy and he writes a lengthy article in newspapers advocating academic autonomy while he continues to intimidate, threaten and terminate every righteous voice in Kathmandu University who tries to practice the academic freedom and autonomy by forming their own professional association.

Ultimately, he claims that he is the saviour of academic excellence while he imposes his and, of course, Sitaram’s, incompetent daughters, nephews and sons, on self-financing students of KU. Like “Mandale nationalism,” the sole purpose of “Mandale Vice-Chancellorism” is to perpetuate his own reign while paying lip service only to all these stuffs like excellence, professionalism, academic spirit, academic freedom and autonomy. Every mandale saw boundless democracy in King Gyanendra’s rule and they questioned every saner voice who were fed up with the king’s rule and wanted it to go. “History repeats itself” people claim quite frequenly, but the time has come to see whether the fate of such Mandale history would be repeated in KU or not.

Dear Friends,
It looks that our efforts have not gone unnoticed. There is one relevant piepce in today's Kathmandu Post. For your convenience, I am giving both the link as well as the full text.

University, union and intervention
By Babu Ram Neupane
***********************************************
The universities are the emblem of national identity and international pride. Their preliminary role is to promote a global fraternity to be spread by a lettered citizenry. At the same time, they are accountable to the nation in which they are established and functioning along with creating credibility at the international level. Political stability is essential to the smooth functioning of any of these institutions in the absence of which anarchy grips the scholastic environment.

But overt political inclination of the related authority mars the very academic goals these institutions purport to serve. Moreover, the relevance of universities has increased by many folds given the homogeneity of human woes and heterogeneity of conflicts plaguing the world humanity. These universities by safeguarding and preserving their unique scholastic tenets are expected to reach out to the world with the well trained and disciplined manpower committed to upholding universal humanitarian values. If these expectations remain unfulfilled on their part, it could either be an inefficient leadership and a case of extreme political pressure exerted by the government among other reasons.

The first and foremost demand forwarded by Nepal University Teachers' Association (NUTA), Tribhuvan University Teachers' Association (TUTA) and the central committee of Tribhuvan University Employees Association was the immediate resignation of the Vice -Chancellor, Rector, Registrar and the Chairperson of the Service Commission of the Tribhuvan University (TU). They were all installed by the royal government and they have resigned giving in to the resistance. Mahendra Sanskrit University (MSU) could never remain an exception and the teachers and employees have been launching an agitation against the sitting senior officials appointed by the erstwhile royal government.
The Purbanchal University (PU), a regional one, has also witnessed similar protests and some of the office bearers have submitted their resignation. TU Part Time Teachers' Association (TUPTA) has been protesting demanding a permanent status to those who have served at least one academic session as a part- time teacher. The Kathmandu University (KU) has also come under sharp criticism for perpetrating nepotism, anti-intellectual collusion and an arbitrary administration.

Some teachers working under it raised serious issues regarding eroding academic culture in a series of letters published in The Kathmandu Post. They have demanded the government interfere with KU to liberate it from the clutches of dictatorial leadership which, they claimed, had established a working unity with the crumbling royal regime against the people's democratic movement.

There is no doubt that the universities should not be led by politically motivated people hell-bent on serving essentially individual ambitions. Still it should not be forgotten that a bad precedence of political appointments and intervention in this academic arena had been institutionalized by none other than those who cry foul over it now.

The Nepali Congress and CPN-UML did not leave any stone unturned to influence the education sector, including the universities. They made a mess of the recruitment policies of teachers and the administrative staff .Their ideological bias let a number of below average candidates in for the service.

A letter published in Kantipur (June 10) has pointed out that 23 percent of the permanent teachers in TU do not teach even one period as mentioned in a UNDP report. What could be more glaring example of sheer irresponsibility than this? Here another question arises as to why they remain unpunished. The answer is simple.
They are either the office bearers of NUTA and TUTA or they are "someone special" who cannot be forced into attending the classes by the campus chief. TU has launched many pretentious plans to tame the teachers .But impunity has risen than ever before. It has also something to do with TUTA and NUTA complicity. It is only the tip of the iceberg. There are a great many controversial issues involving these self-centric and so-called veteran educationists. This is also an underlying cause of the latest discontent and agitation of the part time teachers who get a meager amount of Rs 102 on a period basis.

Dear Friends,

Intervention
Source : http://www.kantipuronline.com/kolnews.php?&nid=77097

This refers to "University, Union, and intervention" by Babu Ram Neupane (18 June). He has brought to the forefront two important issues that are plaguing our academia- politicization via university administrators and unionism of the faculty members. However, both these issues deal with the basic trait of a university - its autonomy. The very fact that universities are for creation, storage and propagation of knowledge implies that any university must function with full autonomy. Without autonomy, no student and faculty member would ever be able to shatter existing myths and bring new truths. The science of learning tells that we have to question every thing that is not well explained and well understood. This is possible only when full autonomy is granted to all the students and teachers.

However, because of our partisan mindsets, we are susceptible to advocate self-serving definitions of university autonomy. We can see that some of our University administrators, as exemplified by Dr. Suresh Raj Sharma, suggest that university autonomy means no-government control in the functioning of any university while he himself tries to control setting-up of Kathmandu University Professors' Association (KUPA).

Going by his own definition of university autonomy, he should have no right to oppose the KUPA. Moreover, he claims that the government cannot even intervene in the affairs of the university while he conveniently forgets that during exigency government can even jettison existing constitution.

The university administrators of his ilk opine that the overactive political affiliations of NUTA and TUTA have taken respective universities hostage and academic activities are severely affected. Though the buck has been passed to the unions of the teachers, the role of such administrators for vitiating the academic environment of the university has not gone unnoticed. University administrators, be it of Kathmandu University or Tribhuvan University, have never let any chance of running their hegemony in the university.

Though they represent the teaching fraternity, their actions have always been towards their own perpetuation. Their avarice to stick to power has forced them to resort to many non-academic activities like inviting the king and his henchmen in a university premise, openly ingratiating with the despotic royal regime, and dividing the teaching community into groups.

In exchange for their own perpetuation, they accept all kinds of governmental influences and do not hesitate to oblige the government by appointing incompetent faculty members, teachers, and administrative staffs. When they can do this just for pleasing the government, what they would do for their own benefits can be easily conjectured. There is no doubt that the university administrators are more responsible for the present mess in our academia. Had they implemented the university autonomy devoid of governmental influence in every aspect while maintaining the highest academic integrity, nobody would have ever asked for governmental intervention. When they are involved in gross nepotism and rampant corruption, it is natural that the government intervention is called for.

And when the government involves itself, the politicians in our government leave no chance to accrue undue benefits.

Therefore, if the administrators themselves are to exemplify the university autonomy by preventing unhealthy practices, even erring faculty members would be under moral obligation to mend their ways. Academic authorities can never accuse the faculty members of resorting to unionism and political activism unless they stop their own practices of politicking. Therefore, the issue has always been practicing university autonomy in true spirit, not in partisan way.

Dear Saritajee,

Thanks for latest posting. I am sorry that I could not answer you in time. However, regarding your query, I strongly support that your views must be their in KU blogger’s blog. Please send your views to them they will definitely publish it like your comment which I just noticed over there.

It seems that you are an ardent supporter of Kathmandu University. That is very good. It means that our championing this cause of purification of Kathmandu University will not be wasted. In Kathmandu University everything is so good. All the students are really good and most of the faculty members are also very good. Students in Kathmandu University are the best ones as they never indulge in politics. Similarly, teachers of Kathmandu University is also the best teachers because they never do politics. But, there are some people who always do poliitcs in KU with Nepotism as guiding principle. Perhaps you might be listening to their views too much. Whatever it may be, it is your choice and I respect your ideas.

Today, when I was browsing through your commnets, I am surprised to read a notice requesting for good comments. I hope that people like you never put bad comments. Who are these people sending threatening cooments and vulgur coments to the blog? For your conveince I putting bloggers notiuce bewlo.

Thanks for the info. The posting by the anonymous blogger requests everyone to use civil language, and be constructive in their criticism of the blogger's opinion. Yet its constant use of words like vigilante, thugs, mandale to describe the management of KU seem hardly civil. I don't know Suresh Sharma, but I find this to be inconsistent.

It seems you too are a big fan of KU yoursefl, and so don't you think it is important that the KU be not under any political unions? It has ruined Tu and a lot of other public institutions.

HI:

We should not decide and destroy a fine institution like KU through anonymous blogging and name calling. TU's demise can directly linked to its over political climate. KU is heading towards that direction... with or without Suresh Sharma. Even if Suresh Sharma leaves KU, the seed of dirty party politics will have been planted by these anonymous bloggers.

Every time there is some firing of the teachers (competent or incompetent for whatever reason ) the culture of street politics's will surface and resurface in the names of "sons and daughters of motherland Nepal").

How sad!

Every time there is some firing of the teachers (competent or incompetent for whatever reason ) the culture of street politics's will surface and resurface in the names of "sons and daughters of motherland Nepal").

this is because Suresh Ji wants to bring his own relatives in that position and there is a protest from the victim who got fired and you call it a political issue, It just tells me you are related to Suresh Ji as well.

MikeJi:

There is no need to be personal and start accusing of each other of being this or that. I am not related to Suresh Sharma, nor do I believe that you are that incompetent disgruntled employee of KU who is trying to get back at KU by blogging rumors. I am also sure that you are not a hardcore political person who seems interested in infesting KU with politics in the name of Suresh Sharma. Let's stay away from it. I have read a lot of postings and believe that KU needs reform, and perhaps you should provide some tangible ideas. Name calling of all sorts alone will not get KU anywhere.

I do not think intruding political activism at KU will solve the problem, and let's agree to disagree without calling each other by any names. This is my humble request.

I don't know about the nepotism and corruption in KU.

But I do know that it is an excellent alternative to broken TU and its products are quite successful.

So, I say "good job" to those who are running it and don't really care how they run it.

If they deliver good results, more power to them.

One of Suresh Raj Sharma's relative,
he was a graduate from american University 4.0 GPA.
What wrong is there to hire him ? All his batch mates know him.

Now lets get to facts?
who got fired?

Write down five names of five people fired and students of KU themselves will say if the decision was good or bad.

Yes, one thing. I dont like the fees structure of KU seeing the not so good facility provided.

The following posting (see below) about nepotism at TU, which was already well known, has not been solved by politics of unions (TUPTA). Thus introducing unions and teacher/student politics will not resolve the "nepotism" problem at KU either. It will do more damage to KU's quality, reputation, and brand name.

TUPTA's Demand

While restructuring Nepal's old structure, academic institutions should also get top priority. Articles contributed by TU Part Time Teacher's Association (TUPTA) and the victims of The Kathmandu University (KU) have touched this issue time and again. The new government formed after the people's movement must devise a proper mechanism to ensure equal opportunities for all teachers so that those who have capabilities get what they deserve.
However, TUPTA's demand for permanent status to those who have served at least one academic session as part time teacher is quite ridiculous. How can they get a permanent status directly? Instead of asking for a permanent post, they should have asked the government to introduce a better exam system to judge their competence and accordingly award a temporary or permanent post.

Favouritism and nepotism is highly prevalent in TU. Even to get a part time job, one should be the kith and kin of the Department head or some senior teachers.

Now, if all the part time teachers are recruited in this way are given a permanent status, what about the academic excellence of TU? Quality and capability must replace favoritism and nepotism. There must be a proper mechanism to recruit the part time teachers in the Universities.

In this regard, Public Service Commision has rightfully introduced a system of taking an entrance exam. Only those who pass it can appear in the final exam for the post of a Section Officer. Isn't such mechanism necessary to ensure equal opportunities for all in TU as well?
