Regarding nepotism in Kathmandu University, there has been number of letters published from the faculties as well as KUPA in e-kantipur (24-27 May). Similarly, there are other write-ups in Nepali languages dailies and weeklies. We, ex graduates of KU, have compiled all these and put them in the following blog;

www.changeinku.blogspot.com

All the graduates and ex-faculteis are welcome to give their opinion. Let us destroy nepotism in KU.

Should the professor of Kathmandu University be entitled to go on strike for their rights?

KUMS,
This is not the time to go for the strike. Better to go for the talks, if they go for the strike, then you don't know the students of KU, they may go against the strikers. Definitely if their study gets hampered by some elements then they will definitely go against it, as they are paying lot of money to study, they don't forgive you.

Dr. Shuresh Raj Sharma/Sitaram Adhikari
If you some how read or hapen to know this thread, please get back the fired professors, give warning if they are doing against the education system of KU( If they are against you, it doesn't matter), then fire them again if they are useless, no one will be against then. This is the voice of Alumni of the KU.
One more thing Dr. Sharma, you are a very good academician, it doesn't suit for you to feed the pets, in this old age, like Manish, Surendra Raj kafle, Pushpa Raj as they got too much from you. You can see Surendra Raj Kafle started to bite you after he got Rabies.
Go for the talk and listen to the professors.

It is a shame that in Nepal, people think it is their birth right to continue in their posts as long as they live. They never prepare themselves and others to handover. Itis this mentality that is leading to downfalls of Girija, Sher Bahadur, Dr. Suresh Raj, Dr. SItaram and others.

Dr. Suresh Raj SHarma has denigrated KU to the extent that KU website is displaying even letters of support for him published in magazines like Spotlight. Any reputed institution would have strict criteria what is included and what is not. If KU is to show letters in support of Dr. SUresh Raj Sharma it should also show other letters that criticizes them. It would have been better not to have included letters in the first place, as this becomes a bad precedent.

Contenders for "PARAS OF KU" title:

1. Manish Pokhrel - Vice-Chancellor Dr. Suresh Raj Sharma's nephew
2. Dr. Ram Kantha Makaju SHrestha - Mayor Bel Prasad Shrestha's brother
3. Brijesh Adhikary - Registrar Dr. Sitaram Adhikary's son
4. Daniel Tuladhar - Leader Dr. Bhadra Man Tuladhar's son

In the United States, almost all jobs are granted based on references. Is it appropriate to tag the reference system here as "nepotism"?

There is nepotism in KU. Dr Suresh raj and Dr Sitaram have continued for too long. They must leave now. They are treating KU like their private property. Administration is full of their relatives. Dr Suresh Raj gave affiliation to Manipal after ensuring MBBS and MD seat for his daughter. Teachers like S R Kafle are far far worse that Boris Niroula. I never understood what he taught and there are many more relatives of them, who are a disgrace for KU.

KUMS is the worst medical college in Nepal, worse than Janaki medical College. It's difficult to differentiate whether it is a medical college or the personal community hospital of Ram Kantha Makaju Shrestha and his followers Nastu Sharma and Dr Koju. All the departments there are facing faculty crisis, all because it has been treated like a private property. What are the future doctors learning there? God help them. To improve its quality and bring it up to the Nepalese standard (at least), all these need to be kicked out. It's high time that they quit.

As Samir28 put it, KUMS has been in crisis since Dr. Arjun Karki was forced to leave by the dealings of Dr. Ram Kantha Makaju Shrestha, now the Associate Dean of KUMS. I think Dr. Navin Thapa was the only one notable staff who remained after Dr. Karki left. He must have been fed up as well and has gone to USA or UK. Something desperate needs to be done to save KUMS.

Bhunte,
You've put the appropriate point to defend, I like it. However, reference doesn't mean that you are not interviewed, you donlt have to go throught the competition or merit. Of course there are reserved quota in schools for their kids to study. There are also big companies in US where father-son, husband-wife anot work for the same company. Besides that KU is not the business form, students are not the customers. If KU's big shots think like that then what is the difference between KU and other private schools like Don Bosco, Nobel Academy, and other Mushroom like institutes? Have you ever learnt anything from Manish Pokharel and Surendra Raj Kafle. You might have spent a lot of money for the course taught by Manish and Kafle, you got betreyed by them.
Sooner or later those cheaters will be wiped out.

Good Point BornInNewyork because jobs like civil service, universitites in Nepal are government sponsored. The Prime Minister is the Chancellor of KU; which makes it a national property to be used for the benefits of Nepalis. Like you say, if KU was a private college like DOn Bosco, it would be different - even then the students would be expected to be treated evenly so that a student who is a relative of the owners should not be given preference. There must be professional ethics in academia - noone should make profits by exploiting others when it comes to opportunities in education. I would go further and expect KU to award more scholarships because the government gives about Rs. 1 crore a year which is more per student of KU than TU. All Nepalis must have opinion in this matter and fight nepotism because KU should be for Nepalis and not for the relatives of Dr. Suresh Raj Sharma, Dr. Sitaram Adhikary, Dr. Ram Kantha Makaju Shrestha or Dr. Nastu Sharma.

BNY ji, i am also not in favor of nepotism and i never chose this path for myadmissions/ scholarships or careers. How do i know Manish or Surendra, as i dont have any affiliation with KU? just wondering if they are they bad choces for KU??

Can anyone shed some light on the status of KU whether it is a private or public univ. What is the proportion of operating budget from government.

I heard Dr AK is a nobal man. i think he has been working in establishing a medical college at patan hospital. his departure from KU is a big loss.

Bhunte, you are right about the loss of KU and KUMS. Among the people left after Dr. Arjun Karki left was Dr. Navin Thapa. He had studied medicine and PhD in London came to teach in KUMS. He also did some research work in Harvard. We were all proud that this guy was working in KUMS because the students felt he was making KUMS to be modeled ontop British or American institution. In an anniversary of KUMS, when everyone was flattering Dr. Karki and him for leaving USA and UK to work in Nepal; he said that it was not that he was making sacrifice but it was an honour to work in the place he was born, his motherland. After 5-6 years, he has left to work in UK or USA; I am not sure temporarily or permanently. He must have got fed up with the infightings between Dr. Suresh Raj Sharma, Dr. Ram Kantha and Dr. Arjun Karki. Now People like samir28 can say KUMS is worse than Janaki, and I am ashamed to say, it probably is. I hope Dr. Thapa returns because there are genuinely few people like him. He used to bring sunshine to KUMS with his ready smile and encouragement to students and faculty that they were no less competent than our counterparts in UK or USA.

Arjun Karki is not an exception of KU, that was the history of KU. Here are some of the examples.

1. Dr. J.M Pradhan left because of conspiracy of Surendra Raj Kafle
2. Dr. Ananta Ramu left because of Surendra Kafle
3. Dr. John Fairfiled left ahead of time because of bad Politics in KU
4.Mr. Kjaital Philistat Left because of Bhola Thapa
5. Dr. Pat Hall Left ahead of time because he couldn't get what he was offered.

And now majority of departments and schools are lead by useless and cunning guys.

Thanks KUMS for letting us to know all details of Dr. Arjun Karki. Why did he go to KU, didn't he know about Ananta Ramu? Dr. Ananta Ramu voluntarilly worked for KU as a Dean. Finally he said " that's the reason this beautiful country is still in shadow, I cannot stay for long in this environment".

Let's think...

Why people blame to King?

When they can not run democratically and equally one tiny dam Kathmandu University.

Nepal has bigger problem with degree certificate holder corrupted and moral-less crooks than illiterate crooks like Girija.

Nepalese people think Nepal problem is uneducated people BUT hell NO......

Is not it?

nationalist is right, if educated people like Dr. Arjun Karki and Dr. Ram Kantha Makaju Shrestha and Dr. Suresh Raj Sharma cannot solve their differences for the benefits of Nepalese students what chance do Prachanda and the King and Girija have. Its a sad state of affairs - the Nepali egotistical I'm always right because I have the might attitude.

We defeat ourselves by using foul languages even though the people we want to oust act like a mafia and therefore can be said to deserve no respects. However, lets not stoop to their levels and degrade ourselves. They are indeed like cancer and do need to be removed.
