Mt Everest jee, when I first went to that place, I also thought that. But technically speaking , there is enough water to divert Melamchi river via tunnel. In otherwords, 170 MLD water is to be diverted whicj is less than 1/3 of the average water flowing at the Nakote of Helambu VDC. In first phase only 170 MLD water is extracted where another 170 MLD from Yangree and Laarke Rivers too in second aND THIRD phase.
PS: MLD= million liter per day

Rahulvai,

What you are saying is, there are other samll rivers that can be mixed up in the same tunnel. Is that right?

If so, are they colocated or is there esay way each of sub river can be mingled. I assume so but what about the size of TUNNEL . What I am seing in the photos is only some Scratch in the Terrain or mother land like ANTS are rambling around.

Just a thought don't assume it as a personal for you. You look like the real Nepali Hero who is absolutely needed at this time. I could say you are the MAN of the match.

GOD BLESS THIS PROJECT AND ALL WELL WISCHERS.

Yes, but the other two rivers yangree and Larke are not small one (in term of total discharge). From each one, 170 MLD will be diverted to main tunnel which is around 27 KM long.

RCCC members did not know about Deuba's arrest:

Two members of the dissolved Royal Commission for Corruption Control (RCCC) have said that they did not know who had ordered the arrest of former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba.

Recording their statements at the high level commission formed to probe the atrocities of RCCC against the democratic leaders, two members of RCCC, Raghuchandra Bahadur Singh and Haribabu Chaudhary, claimed that they did not order the investigating officials to arrest Deuba.

"They claimed that they did not know who issued orders to arrest Deuba," reports quoted a member of the Ojha Commission, Ram Prasad Gaudel as saying.

According to Gaudel, the two members of the RCCC also told the Commission that they knew about Deuba's arrest only the next morning.

The commission headed by Appellate Court judge Madhav Prasad Ojha also interrogated RCCC member Prem Bahadur Khati on Sunday.

I have worked with Gopal Siwakoti Chintan.
I've debated/discussed issues with him.

I am aware that there is a lot of -- what I perceive to be
-- utter garbage about him that's being circulated all
over by those who cannot stand him for a variety of
reasons.

[In Nepal, do some good work, and everyone will be your enemy in no time! That is why, personally, I give
ZERO value to how popular someone is in Nepal.]

I can't speak for others -- but based on my many straightforward interactions with him, my
impression is that Chintan is:

- a very, very smart guy,
- who does his homework,
- reads up on all the relevant stuf, and
- is a sharp, prepared debater and, most of all, I find him
- to be intellectually very honest. (If someone has better arguments than he has, he concedes his pointd).

The guy is a maverick, who's not afraid to make enemies.
And I like his guts.

Sure, I do NOT agree with much of what he says or does, nor do I have to like him personally -- but I do sense that even with his taking opposing views of things, one could sensibly work with him.

My take?

If you are going to do any 'public policy type of work in Nepal, it's thousand times better to have smart "opponents" like Chintan who makes you think than have stupid "friends" who lead you down the path of ruin.

Then again, what do I know?

Yes, of course he has all the qualities you mentioned except one- honest. I mean intelectual but not an honest person in the matter of development work. He has been always against the development activities. He and his allies including Madhaw Kumar Nepal have been resposible for ruining Arun III project. Do you agree or not. He was feeded घाँस by local people of Marsyaangdi project and deported doing झ्याइंकुटि।

ashu, I can aggree to some degree with you on what properties made Gopal Chintan like that but my conclusion is not same to yours.

I have debated with him in conferences and meetings, and got known how hollow knowledge does he have in the subject matters he is involved in, I couldn't believe myself how easily he could agree with my opinions that contradicted to his ones.

He is a good debaters, agreed, but not intellecutually sharp. He surrenders very easily once he has to speak at intellectual level, but he is smart to patch up his weakness and police his opinions using some cunning arguments. He is very good in raising questions and luring media but not in proposing solutions.

I am sure, it would be much good to our country if people had paid attention to others, who are not good debaters but more intellectual than him; who knows weakness and limitation both as well. e.g. rahulvai

If you think he is earning enemy in Nepal by doing good work, then my friend you are in huge mistake. in fact his business is to ruin the work not doing the work, he has built up excellent carreer track record in collapsing projects. He is not smart but 'over-smart' opponent who leads everybody down the path of ruin.

भनिहाले नि "कच्चा बैद्यको मात्रा - यमपुरीको यात्रा" । हेर्दै जाऔ, देखि हालिन्छ नि ।

Nothing personal to him, neither to you, but couldn't just stop laughing after seeing how this kind of people prevail in nepal and how genuine intelectuals are sidelined in the recent past, and again the same cycle is being repeated in Melamchi case right now.

Well, guys, you can't have it both ways.

On one hand, you imply that Chintan was responsible for
the demise of the mega-project Arun III.

If that's true, then, let's face it, that makes Chintan very powerful -- someone who could "destroy" a mega
project, right?

On the other hand, you have nothing good to say about him. In fact, you think he's all show and no substance. That's fine.

But if your second statement is true, then, think for a moment: How could someone who who's all show and no substance have "destroyed" a mega project?

And what does that say about the nature of the project -- that it was so flimsy to begin with that even someone with "no substance" could destroy it?

Doesn't add up, does it?

Well, first, make up your mind -- what is Chintan?

A superpowerful activist? Or:
Someone with no substance?

I think the truth is somewhere in between.

**********

Look, you can make all the fun you want of Chintan, and that's fine.

I am aware that defending Chintan publicly is NOT an easy task.

As a 'mainstream careerist', I am also aware that it's very, very difficult to be a maverick, to be a public questioner, to be a positive 'misfit' in Nepal for
someone like Chintan . . . . for there's very little tolerance for the range of ideas he brings forth, even
when one disagrees with his ideas.

It's much easier for most people to gang up against
Chintan to dismiss him than to engage with him on an idea-to-idea level persistently and patiently, for he's a smart debater, and he can make you look stupid if you are not prepared -- and this is something that most people don't like about him.

Well, I do.

As a Nepali citizen, I, for one, am APPRECIATIVE of the fact that there exists someone like Chintan who asks questions and does things that may be unpopular but are necessary to keep a sense of healthy debate going on about many donor-funded projects in our society.

Now saying that does NOT mean that Chintan is a god, and everything he says is true -- just that voices that belong to him need to be put forth in the public space so that people can examine them, argue with them or ignore them.

Tetti ho.

As for that Marsyangdi incident that reportedly happened more than TEN years ago, I would NOT try to squeeze much juice out of it. The world, and Chintan have moved on to many other things since. Besides, that incident does NOT prove or disprove the validity of Chintan's stance then. All it says is that Chintan was pursuing something that was unpopular.

And being unpopular is neither a crime nor a sin.

And finally, on another note, I think it would be fun to write a lengthy The New Yorker-esque profile of Chintan someday . . . for I find him very fascinating, even when
I do NOT agree with him most of the time, and he knows it.
