Hi all!!

I wanted to share with you all an article I have come across recently. I am sure many of you have heard of it and are well aware of it. Even then, I thought it would not be a waste to mention about it here on Sajha , for the news relates to someone amongst us that shines like the Sun , true to her name as well as virtues...

I do believe, with due respect to her, that every Sajhabashis should read it. I hope I am not on the dangerous grounds by posting this message...

The article can be found here....

http://www.nation.com.np/column_4.htm

Enjoy!!

A lot has been said about the riots that took place after the brutal murder of 12 innocent nepalis.. of course, if u retrospect after the dust settles, those acts look very irrational . But sometimes i like to look them as not something unnatural if those things dont go out of control... because there are times when it is irrational to expect rationality... so i dont think those riots deserve that much of criticism... i may be wrong though...

laughing buddha,
Sir, calling me stupid does not make you any smart. and having a different view on somethign does not make me your enemy- i hope. Sitara jyu has understood that and i'm grateful. However, If your intension is to look smart than actually be smart than go ahead and stick your head inside the sand and think the whole world is stupid...hope you feel smart :)

So you think the riot was started for the looting? You think all the People who were in that riot they were there cuz they wanted free stuff or they wanted to go break some stuff? The murder of 12 Nepalis and the brutal slaughter of one of the victims was not even worthy to a riot in thier country against thier brutal murder? What did you expect Nepali people to do after seeing such inhuman treatment to one of the brothers?
I personally, try to keep aside my personal biases and try not to be steriotypical, but after seeing that video i have practically quit greeting my muslim colleques in my work enviroment. I know, i am not doing right but i can't help as a human. I have emotions and my blood boils wheni see something like that happening to one of my brothers.
No matter, how much you preach about goody goody logics and so called intellectual prespective, I bet your blood boils at one time or the another too, considering the fact that you're a human. I'm sure if something like that was happened to your immediate family (god forbids) member you would be doing worse than that.

You just were not in that situation of those Nepali people in kathmandu. you were sitting behind a desk in your cozy apartment somewhere in the usa or western europe country and were typing messages on sajha.com on how those people should act. However, if you were in that mass and if you had see the victim's mother fainting and his father and brother crying , i wonder if your cold blood would have boild too not.
It's easy for sitara ji to live in DC and i don't know where you're located and judge the people in Nepal. Tell them you should do this and you should do that , with the arrogance of being educated or residing outside of Nepal. However, if you were in that situation , if you were in that scenerio and if you had to deal with what majority of Nepali people have to go though in thier lives , i wonder how much "intellectuality" you could show at that point.
I think , it's natural for Nepali people to be mad. I think, it's not nice that public properties were destroyed. However, I'm more than proud that they did the riot - that makes me feel that our bood(Nepali) has not cooled down yet with the currpotions and frustrations we have been going though . That gives me a hope that something will change in Nepal.... let these kind of riots which symbolizes unity and standing for each otehr come more often..

If we are hell bent on justifying the riots as acts made inevitable by the brutal killings by the Islamic militants, how is our line of reasoning any different from those of the militants who see their acts absolutely justified in the name of religion/Jihad? The loss of Nepalese lives and property, inside Nepal or outside, is the same; the agony is the same. Vandalizing the country's poor infrastructure out of revenge/frustation and placing innocent Nepali people directly at the locus of our irrational wrath do not serve to mollify the conscience of a nation already stifling in political decadence. We can not be selective in deciding whom to punish when we suffer a loss.

Sitara's article in no way condones murder-- in Iraq, in Nepal, anywhere. Islamic fanatics took away the dear lives of twelve Nepalese but equally disturbing fact is that similar acts of murder and violence are almost commonplace in Nepal thesedays. Are we defining murder as brutal and revenge-worthy when it is committed by a non-Nepalese? What about our own Nepalese who are on a killing frenzy in the name of a new nation and in the name of establishing peace? What makes us just sit back and gawk at the political leaders for a solution to the killings inside the nation while we turn to rioting when Islamic militants commit similar crime? How many took to the streets after reading in the newspapers about a Nepali sacrificed as a "bali ko boko" in front of his family? How many turned to violence upon hearing the news of a Nepali buried alive by the peace force accusing him of being a terrorist? Go to the remote villages, the air is pregnant with such stories but subdued in fear. Have we unleased our anger at the muslims because we fear no reprisal from them since they are a minority in the nation whereas we are fully aware of the consequences that might befall upon us if we were to irate the revolutionaries or the " peace keepers" and therefore we take their human rights violations as "business as usual"?

What's right or wrong the nepalese people vandalized the private and public property and been attacked to the minority muslim people in Nepal after going through the news that 12 nepalelse had been killed in Iraq ? It is true that we are all human beings and we have the emotion. So, as a human, we cant control our rage hearing such cruel news and automatically human turn into violent what was happend on 5th September in Nepal.

But as my understand, why the nepalese people went to vandalise the mosque and Muslim nepalese minority people. In my personal sense, i can see that kathmaduites are not happy seeing the Mosques at the centre of Kathmandu. As a Kathmandu dwellers and like me others have had the feelings of get trouble while travelling every friday when thousands of Muslims prayers spread out the hearth of Kathmandu. I have the feelings that What's the F**king hell, they need to build the Mosque at the heart of the Kathmandu. If they are the pure muslim, they must think that there should not be any interfere while following any religion. Next, Who that F**king nepalese Dalal had given perminssion to build the Mosque at such heart of the Kathmandu. So, as a Kathmanduites, i can only see the reason behind attacked on Mosques and Minority Muslims people are very simple so we cant say this kind of events would happen on coming future as well. So, every concern Government as well as Religious leader Must think twice about all this incident. So, we can take this event as a lession not to be happen on coming future.

At last, i am the person who believes J bhayo tyo ramro because every bad or good events gives lession to our coming future generation.

Jaaye Desh Jaaye Naresh

I had always seen 3 monkeys of Gandhi. First, covering his mouth:Sepak no evil.Second, covering his ears:Hear no evil.Third, covering his eyes:See no evil. It was last year I saw one more monkey added.Fourth, covering his d*ck:F**k no evil.
I saw MM writing about Gandhi's 3 monkeys, so I thought I tell you about the fourth one.
This has nothing to do with any article or anything.

the art of literature is one thing and being logical and realistic thinker is another...as soon as you all get the difference between those two things, maybe than you will understand my and moneyminded posts..till then, you can enjoy kalam wali bai's post, she is absoulutly a skilled writer..

there are always two diverged paths, one path, everyone takes it, follows it, being blind folded, but to walk on the other path, you need courage, and then only you will make a differnece in a society...and abt knowing what is right and what is wrong, its the only matter of who states it, wrong and right are symnous...

Oye LaughingBuddha are you nuts? Are you aware of the fact why BUSH attack on Afghanis and Iraqis? Afganis and Irapis whoever died, they were innocent as well, but they pay for deed of their successor (muslims). And thats a trend and absolutely its not good trend. But be Thankful to Nepali; we are not so involved in Hate Crime. Would have been in INDIA by now couple thousands muslim would have been died. Those who were in street were agitator you can't stop them with your nonsense philoshopy (for chirst sake put it inside your undie). Laughing WHoever, Bring the news of "government being so concern prior to massacar". Thanx I am in US otherwise I would have bomb Singha Durbar. Instead of asking somebody else BAU to pay, did you ask your BAU to stop that RIOT. Ask your BAU first, he might be the first to SET FIRE in MASJID.

By the way Sitara Jiu, somewhere in the writing you have said these sort of riot is not "a noble occurence in nepal", so comfy urself with the fact its not nobel occurence, lets count goes on. I am glad atleast that riot was not motivated my any Party.

God Bless Nepal.

Sitarajyu,

Either you don't like criticism or you like making sarcastic comments. I think its the latter. Nice self-promotional plug-in though. Good to know you have a background in both sociology and psychology.

I wasn't referring to your article in particular, but articles with your point of view that have been flooding the media since the incidents on September 5. Specifically, an article by an American psychologist who devoted an entire page in the same magazine trying to explain the mental state of the Nepalese people and how it led to the riots. Other writers have assumed this air of intellectual superiority, as if they belong to only a minority who share similar views. Nepalese live in a volatile environment ready to blow up anytime, Nepalese were ready to snap, blah blah blah. If indeed this was the case, why did only 0.25% of the entire population "snap"?

I didn't think your article took the same tone until you made that statement here - "When the majority denounces any acts of violence, there is still hope for Nepal." Did it really take messages and letters from Nepal to reassure you that "the Nepali mass" did not approve of the riots?

Whenever incidents like these happen, intellectuals and quasi-intellectuals start overanalyzing everything. How about just accepting it as human nature and condemning the few instead of digging for reasons when there are none? A bunch of people went crazy, that's it. People go crazy everywhere - it doesn't just have to be in a country like Nepal. People rioted when the Lakers won championships. People rioted when a black man got beaten by white cops. Even if Nepal were in a state of utopia, a bunch of people still would've gone out on the streets to riot had the same incident taken place. It has little to do with the state of Nepal and the general mindset of the Nepali people.

Hope you do understand that I agree with the point of view - that what happened was unfortunate and should be condemned. And the mean things I may have said above are not targeted at your article in particular, ok? Because I am glad you did not overanalyze the situation like other writers despite having a background in sociology and psychology :)

republican and I are on the same wavelength here. The start of the riot was an emotional response aggravated by the presence of a mob. When someone hurts you, you want to hurt him/her. A logical reaction was what the so called intellectuals were looking for but they got the wrong one. Coz Nepalis are humans too and humans have feelings which get hurt. And when the miniscule amount of pride and dignity we have, has been mauled, to be sane, to get all the hatred out you have to get the axe and hit that tree in your backyard. And that was exactly what happened.

Now let's hope all the hate is out of the system and actually start thinking and better still, acting on those plans about what to do with the bigger problem at hand: How to make Nepal a better place.
