I wanted to stay away from this type of inflammatory topics, but, after reading some of the postings, I'd like to opine.

Racism, whether we like it or not is here to stay. It appears in different shapes and forms. Sometimes, its a legitimate issue, And at other times, it is a mere weapon of defense for the inferior classes. For example, was there racism against the blacks, and other minorities in the USA in the 1900s? Yes. But, at this day and age, racism/hatred has been marginalized. However, we have several Black groups such as Black Panther who are similar to Ku Klux Klan, except they are all blacks, and simply spread the word of hatred and racism against White America more than anything else.

Now back to the issue in Nepal. It is not fair to limit this discussion to only Bahuns vs. Newars. It exists against every race in Nepal, Newars, Bahuns, Gurungs, Magars, Tharus --based on caste. But, how about racism based on your occupation --Isn't racism also a form of discrimination??? How many times have you really approached people (In Nepal) who are financially deprived, and take on jobs such as fruit sellers to shoemakers, garbage collectors to housemaids......I think we tend to over emphasize a miniscule of things, and close our eyes against the big picture.....It is the our inability comprehend, and rationalize the issue, and overly generalize against one race or another.

When people from Kathmandu go to villages, the people from the villages term then 'shaharia'. It's just a natural process to give a name to someone whos from a different place. Maybe you're too sensitive. Nothing racist about it. I see no point in making a big deal about it unless you have inferiority complex.

Just coz you met one racist doesn't mean the whole community/society is racist! Just as I've met some really nice-hearted Newar fellas but I don't go clasifying them all as Nice people! Individual actions account for individual retribution...Lets keep the whole damn society outta this!!

I agree with you on one point...and I regret that more than anything else.....talking in Nepali in front of American collegues...be it at work or grocery store...or at a public park.

But what I wanted to say is, if you keep justifying these actions, won't that bring in more fractions rather than try to fix what is already broken......I think we should avoid speaking Nepali infront of Americans as it is disrespecting them, so is a Newar speaking in Newari infront of other non-newari speaking friends.....

Woldtiger, well 99 percent of the people do it. It's just in the genes to talk your own language with one's kind. Plus within our Nepali culture, people think you're showing off or that you have attitude if you don't talk in Nepali so it adds a new dimension to why we talk in nepali.
