Regarding nepotism in Kathmandu University, there has been number of letters published from the faculties as well as KUPA in e-kantipur (24-27 May). We (KUMS) are a group called KU Meritocracy Society dedicated to end corruption, cronyism and nepotism in KU. Unlike KUPA, KUMS can not accept everyone in KU as a member because not everyone is suitable for the benefit of KU's future. If you want to join KUMS, you can join the KUMS movement because it has a member in each school of KU except the School of Management (although some are more active than others). KUMS will name and shame cronies in KU as well as name and praise the creditable people in KU. So join us to end corruption and nepotism in KU.

I saw somewhere Surendra Raj kafle's Name, that guy is the most Chakadi Baaz in KU.

What his duty is:
1. He is a PHD in Physics, but doesn't know how to teach and any of subject matter.
2. Most corrupt and political pet. Politically he is inclined to any governement. Some times he takes name of Girija and other congress people to become VC.
3. His duty is to please higher autjority than to make students students happy.
4. he even used to please Minister's Son in KU when he was student there. He used to get scared of him. While he was teaching in the class room, he congratulated Minister's Son in class Room, as he has honored him as Ministers Son. Every student is aware of his depth of Chakadi.
5.VC is far away from his aproach, he even doesn't deserve to be a faculty memeber. He should be taken away from the Faculty there.

Everyone knows Suresh Raj has surrounded himself with incompetent people to prolong his tenure. Maybe the Government should be looking of Nepalese academics working outside of Nepal and invite them for a term as VC. Failing that, we cannot see KU getting better. Introducing political interference in KU will be the worst nightmare.

Alternative KU.
Why donot the disgruntled staff of KU; set up another university or call themselves People's KU? Lets see what they can do and if they can do any better than Suresh Raj Sharma and his friends and relatives.

This is not Suresh Raj Sharma's fault, the culture became like that, Janga Bahadur did for his own nears and Dears, Shaha Dynasty is doing the same. Suresh Raj Sharma is not an exception, if he wants to become an exception first he should kick out his nears and dears. The successful organizations in United States have the rule that one's spuose or kid cannot work for the same company and there is no exception for such rule.
To be honest, Suresh Raj Sharma, Sitaram Adhikari and Bhadra Man Contributed a lot for KU. We cannot compare the contribution of those fellows to any other Institution in Nepal. But we don't want their pets to becoming boss of Public.

Dr. Kafle is one of the core group of Dr. Sharma which conceived KU. Later, being conflict with Dr. Adhikari, Dr. Kafle was sidelined. Who senior is qualified? We know about Dr. Kafle, but others are the same when it concerns of teaching. All are chakadi baj.. You just see kafle....but others too..but kafle did not show nepotism like others. I agree, outside world may want to have it's greater role in the KU management, may be other academicians of Nepal. Becase there was no successer developed...there is room to think like that.. But this is not entirely true. Institution is institution... kale, gore, langade.. anyone can be vc, in the fact if instituition is not supporting nepotism and transparent. At the begining, Dr. Sharma was also a just science teacher.
I support sharma for extending his tenure, in the case the institution must be transparent, and his seedlings must be expelled from KU.

Hey KUMS....are you a single or a group? How can a single person could have that much true and depth information.. God ! you covered almost all departments and schools. I envy your remarks. Good knowledge! I knew KU too, but certainly less than you. Most remarks are true!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think those who feel the twinges of nepotism when it happens to them ought to realize how a majority of the populace in Nepal feel when they are deprived of an equal opportunity.

One only needs to look at the damn list of who's in the government and who is being appointed, through practices of nepotism in most cases, one will wonder if Nepal belongs to only a few priviledged castes or groups.

No wonder, the epidemic of nepotism is also in the academic institutions where the afno maanche culture thrives on just like in the bureacracy, army and judicial system, not to mention the royal palace.

Take a look at the 75 districts? Who are the CDOs? Take a look at the Ambassadors appointed by the government. Take a look at the judicial system. As if indeginious groups do not exist in Nepal.

You will find that in a true sense Prithvi Narayan Shah never unified Nepal. He only solidified power and priviledges for a few castes or groups over the rights of many indeginious groups. IT IS A LIE AND A MYTH REPEATED THOUSANDS TIMES THAT PRITHVI NARAYAN UNIFIED NEPAL. We were brainwashed again and again right from the time you read a MahendraMala.

So, if you are complaining about nepotism in an academic institution, just take it as the making of your own. YOU CAN'T JUST HAPPILY CLIMB THE STEPS OF THE NEPOTISM LADDER IN ONE HAND AND COMPLAIN WHEN IT DOES NOT SUIT YOU.

REMEMBER, THE MANDALE PANCHE DAN BAHADUR SHAHI, WHEN HE WAS IN THE PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSION, HE HAD DISCLOSED THAT THERE ARE MORE THAN 50,000 EMPLOYEES IN THE GOVERNMENT (AND MOSTLY IN ACADEMIC INSTITUTIONS, BUREACRACY, ARMY AND POLICE) WHO HAD GOT THE JOB OR PROMOTION ON THE BASIS OF A FAKED CERTIFICATE. They are still there and some are happily enjoying their pensions.

PLEASE TRY TO UNDERSTAND WHY ANY POLITICIAN WORTH HIS SALT IS NOW TALKING ABOUT "SAMAWESHI".

Thank you for noticing our group: KU Meritocratic Society. The key to success of KU has been the KU School of Management and then the hyped propaganda that all schools are equally good. The truth is all other schools have been just below average but the students who joined the courses have been top class. KU did provide a good place without student politics for the students who just wanted to study. Now that seems to be changing too.

There are lots of unaceptable proactices in KU which need to be uprooted. Starting with Suresh Raj Sharma and Sitaram Adhikary but we can not see any upstanding alternatives, either. Perhaps Dr. Arjun Karki; who has been trying to set up Patan University after leaving KU; could be given the chance. Dr. Arjun Karki was a shining beacon in KU's short history; and he deserves to be the next VC of KU.

Good analysis.. I wonder why your name is same with medical school? I agree about the Dr. Karki, he is an excellent academician as well as a great manager with far long sight of planning.. But...I don't think he could be given the chance. In my openion, Dr. Sharma is going to be re-appointed, if not, then VC could be Bhadraman. There is none who can dare to shift paradigm. I think, bhadraman will be best successor to hide irregularities done by Dr. Sharma and Dr. Adhikari. You should not forget Dhulikhel, Banepa, they will support these heads only. I surprise, only KUPA is daring to do something, others all are protesting under the table.
Don't forget Dr. Sharma is from Janakpur, he knows all damm bihari politics..

Guys/Gals:

I know a friend of mine joined KU and leaving NTC. He was in the first batch of teachers
hired when they started the Engineering division in Tangal and then to Dhulikhel. He was
joined by 5 others and all of them were really qualified. My friend was a topper in Isc.,
broke academic record in Indian Engineering College (MNREC) and was very famous in
Nepal when they created the first 'CD-ROM encyclopedia of Nepal' and was inagurated
by then Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba. Do you know where all these 6 teachers are
now ? As far as I know all but one left the KU within 2 years. My friend left after 9 months.

He told me that 'Suresh Raj' is capable of running a 10+2' college but not an University
and he is in Education to make money...so I do not see this University going any futher...
I hope it does not spoil the academic environments for all the students.

Damn!! He was right !! I feel that VC should have a term limit so that new ideas and
new people can come in and propser. Besides, if you have a term limit, you will try to
introduce something good so that people can remember you legacy.

I heard that Suresh Raj Sharma was a 'Realstate Broker' when he started. I am not
surprised he is running the University with that mentality. He thinks that 'one student'
is a 'one-time' client and will not come to the university again and again....just like a
person buying a land.

Jhakash_KU has it spot on analysis of who would be the next VC. Suresh Raj and his co. are far too cunning for oppositions like KUPA. They have overcome far too many uprisings - there is not a department where staff have not revolted; but they have all ended up leaving. Reform and KU have not gone hand in hand. Pity the epitaph of Suresh Raj will only acknowledge more crooks like Bel Prasad Shrestha and Ram Kantha Makaju Shrestha. Suresh Raj has been too compromised by local Dhulikhel politics. On the other hand he has benefitted from it as well by being VC term after term.

I think all guys here are either graduates of KU. ex faculty members of KU, or Staffs. Everyone knows everyting. For me I'm pointing to Surendra Raj Kafle because of his cravings towards the positions of KU. Here are some of the facts I noticed very clearly.

In 94/95 KU hired a Physics Faculty member JM Pradhan, who is the author of first Physics text book of I.SC. no doubt he is the veteran phsycist, no one compete his knowldge and his teaching style in Physics. Dr Kafle used come in the class and alwyas used back bite him, ask any first batch of KU engineering students. He was sidelined by suresh raj Kafle as he always had fear of replacing him from there.

In 97/98 There was another big shot Dean of Engineering from IIT chennai, Ananta Ramu, he was the Jewel of KU that time, Kafle wanted to become Dean and he sidelined him, he alwyas used to talk all bad points about Ananta Ramu. He was finally able to kick him out and Bhdra Man again appointed for Engineering Dean and Kafle Appointed as Science Dean.

back in 98 he used to tell all students that now his turn is to become Registrar and then VC, he clearly said that time.

Guys , this guy is the root who always welcomed Nepotism in his favour. He demanded for Registrar without any basis as he used use the Political power that time. That's why he got sidelined by Registrar, No doubt that Sitaram is far better than Kafle and Sitaram has contributed 100 times than kafle for KU.

So far I've no complaints about 3 guys Duresh Raj, SitaRam and Bhadra Man, but the Policy should be fair and their relatives should not hold the KU. It's again because of the Advisors like Surendra Raj Kafle, Surendra Raj kafle is not the only one but there are Many such useless greedy people in KU. All of them should be wiped out.
