Did any one have problem renewing passport in Embassy of Nepal in the U S A.

Let me tell you what happen I sent in my passport 3 and half week ago in D C to renew but I was expecting it in a week. That’s how long it took 5 years ago. That’s how long it took for my friend year ago.
So I called after a week, and my trip was in two week.
The answer I got was we just received it week ago so it’s still in process. And I told the person can you do it little faster I am leaving for Nepal in two weeks. Person there said the guy who does it is not in the office, he went hospital cuz he had a head ache. I asked when will it be done then person said it says on the application 2 weeks.
Ok……….. I waited 2 weeks I still didn’t get it and I was getting worried cause my trip was in a week. So I called again and the guy answered rudely “ya.. still in process just call tomorrow so that I don’t for get” I was being nice so that I could get my passport back in time. So I kept saying ok.
So I called back next day and then the person said it’s in process of being done. So I thought ok finally. After 2 day I went to check my mail box it wasn’t there reason I went to check is I sent return prepaid priority mail. I went next day it wasn’t there so I thought may be post office is taking time. So next day just to be sure I called DC again and the person said oh I think it’s mailed I said can you check. The person came back and said it was mailed yesterday. I was so pissed I had 2 days left to go to Nepal.
So I check day before I went to Nepal and thank god it was there. Man three weeks 2 days it took to do 15 min job.
I was in Nepal and I asked the passport making place how many days does it take there they said it takes 2 days……..
Then I was thinking in USA even if all the nepalis living in America sends there passport to renew same time same day. It won’t take that long to renew.
Think about America I am sure they have millions of passport application and they have to do all the background check and all that, even then it doesn’t take them that long. It only took week and a half to get new passport for my kuire friend.

Then I am thinking when will the ways of nepalis working style ever change, even coming to America they work like in Nepal.
I am not talking about us who work here in and live in US I am talking about Nepal government employees.
Not to mention my friend send in his passport to renew and got it in 2 week even when he went to pick it up. The funny part is he called and told them that he is going to be coming to pick it up. When he went to pick it up after 1 and half week it wasn’t done they told him to come next day and when he went there two men were just chatting away doing nothing. And when he went there next day the guy told him it’s not done and he told them he is leaving the city in an hour then they told him wait. And it took them only 15 min to do it………

Please share your story if you had same problem do you guys think we should do something about it…………………..

it's true. government officials and workers are the servants of public in the eyes and laws of democracy. this is the basic fundamentals of DEMOCRACY GOVERNMENT.
if the government and its officials and workers fails to work for its masters (Public)/Janta then its no point keep them.
In many civilised democratic countries for example USA, UK and Singapore these kind of attitudes by the government officials would be dismissal. But not in our country Nepal.

therefore we have to tok nay damn ki damn chick nay hor lai. hami lay boru new effective government chose gor nay k.

Hmmm suvachintak1, you really had a great patience. Well that is really not fair for those employees to be very irresponsible and act like as if they are in Nepal.
It is not just your suffering, it could be one of us .. we all have to face them sooner or later .. hey guys come up with some ideas so that we will be able to teach those employees a lesson..
Well I somewhat agree with bornfree to get his name and details so that we can tell everyone about him...

If anyone have better idea .. let us know .. we should not leave them like this ..

And suvachintak1, we sud unite so that they will know that democracy is for all nepali not for them ..

Jai Nepal...

i have mailed my PP twice to DC & the time taken was 1 week and 3 weeks. i don't have a reason to complain. i will however give the benefit of doubt to DC embassy (in this thread's case) as you are supposed to renew your PP at least 6 months in advance of the expiry date. agreed the embassy staff can slack but you know it better - BE PREPARED. you certainly don't wanna wait 2 weeks before your travel and think about renewing your PP. i think there are certain things you gotta do before you blame others! staying organized is one of them ;)

I was in Nepali Embassy recently and was quite shocked at its condition.
NEPALI EMBASSY DOES NOT HAVE COMPUTERIZED SYSTEM.
So please guys before lamenting the people working there, imagine doing all the work by hand.
The computers they have are not networked properly for printing and infested with virus. The photocopy facility is not adequate and have to be done outside.
We could argue that government must be providing them fund but you are a citizen of a country whose per capita income is less that $ 300.00 per year.
So intead of doing nothing and complaining ,we can help them by pooling our resources and time to computerize the passport and visa process.

Just know only IF the Embassy does away with the practice of hosting useless and non-productive parties, like democracy day and for the visiting so called VIP frineds and dignitaries from Nepal, they can save to the tune of 15,000 dollars yearly. They should already have a saving of about $5,500 from the king's birthday celebration. In all of the Embassy's parties, the people who are invited are the friends, relatives and acquaintances of the Embassy staff and it has very little to do with keeping the Embassy’s aim of promoting the country’s best interest. What is the use of an extravaganza by our Embassies abroad when the country is literally begging for money from the donors. The question is do we really need to have a military attaché posted in our Embassies? If yes, for what reasons? With $300 per capita income, we ought to be changing our focus from the past. The money that comes for the tourism promotion is used at the convenience of the Embassy, not for the purpose that was sent for. In Nepal, no one checks to make sure whether or not the money was used properly. All the auditors who come in are treated as VIPs, so there no berujhu or discrepancy is shown. The political scene in Nepal may have changed but not in the Nepal Embassies. They still govern by the Panchayat time and their mindset is that they are there to serve the king or king’s henchpeople, not the people.

In my view, the new focus should be transparency, austerity and accountability to the people while promoting country’s best interests.

Only a year ago, a senior Embassy staff at the Washington DC had reportedly told this to a prospective visitor inquiring about the Nepal situation, "Dun’t go to Nepal, shikyurty is porblem, Maoists are killing". You can imagine how they can promote the interest of the country, much less to expect an efficient management from them.

Surely they could buy the computers from the money saved from the non hosting of useless dinner and coctail parties. It is a matter of priority. Most reporters do not write anything about the operations of our Embassies abroad because they themselves, having brought up in the same ghus and natabad culture, either do not see anything wrong or simply take advantage of the situation or perhaps simply ignore it.

Why blame only a lowly paid lower level employee for the mismanagement at the Embassy? It is the hakims who are responsible for it. If you look at the Embassy staff right from the Ambassador down, and whatever resources they have, hardly anybody puts in enough time for which he or she is appointed for. This is no different from the bureaucracy in Nepal and all our Embassies reflect the workings or non-workings of our bureaucracy in Nepal. Clearly, they have not changed.

Be it in an Embassy or a Ministry in Nepal, most people who are somebody holding a post or who has a relative/friend, they do not go through the same route or channel as we common people go through. Just a phone call and the Embassy staff will be up in their toes. It is us the common people who support them, and, in turn, ironically, it is us the common people who are made to suffer.

The problem is that we can never expect changes since those people who are in a position to bring about the needed changes go through a different channel than we do and they never experience what we do. A different timeframe and a very different set of rules is applied for different people.

I feel the activities of each Embassy should be put under a select committee of the Parliament which should be evaluated every year, based on objectives vs. accomplishments and best use of scarce resources. I am sure such a committee will seek the objective feedback from the community within the jurisdiction of an Embassy.

Will they ever learn?

I don't know about the internal politics and nepotism prevalent in the civil service of Nepal .I donot want to get into the debate of accountability and responsibility.
But living here and being used to seeing everything done by computers , I was disheartened to see the first image of Nepal in USA in shambles.Being NRN, I always carry this image of nice and beautiful "back home" my parents always painted.

Mike Bibby what the heck are you talking about? i have never been to Raxaul in my life? i i think you got the wrong person dude.
i know nepal's government because i returned to nepal for the fourth time in 2003.
this time i stayed in nepal for 9 months. the longest in my life.
so no doubt i have to go to government office to do so many paper works.
mind you it's just not one but many government office. Therefore i learned so many negative things about our nepali government which i am so ashamed to describe here.
did i tell you that at one point i nearly killed that old bastard at nepal's MOE but for the restrained of other people there........i couldn't.

Tisa are you saying you just want to keep quiet on this issues. are you saying you pretend not to know all these occurs in nepal's government and politic?wake up will you?
if we all keep quiet then eventually we lose out.

Foreign Ministry in Nepal knows all about its officials and irregularities in the Embassies. System cannot be changed as it is set out to be so! Recently, I saw one officer in queue to come to the NE at DC, he is more than anybody else. He is god damn stubborn. He is eyeing at $$ salaries and $ Bhattaa etc. He even does not care about his seniors as he is one of the leaders of employee`s association. If he comes to join..your work will be done a year later.. be sure to send your PP six months beforehand.
I will however visit Foreign Ministry this fall and will discuss about problem in the NE @ DC. Their comments will be posted in this thread again.

Dear Mr. Hydrogen Sulphide

After reading your comment on Sajha you may have personal animosities with Dig Bahadur Tamang, if you think he is that much rude, why don't you go to embassy, submit written complain to the Ambassador, or his immediate boss against him. It is not wise just barking behind curtain, you are just assassinating somebody else good character who is serving his country even though he is in foreing country.
