while most of the nepalis in usa can't vote in the elections, i'm interested to know whether more nepalis are liberals gravitating towards the democrats or conservatives rooting for bush to win the white house again. what is your political alignment and why?

personally i prefer the republicans. most of the core issues dividing the two parties do not affect me. i do not care about the war on terror, gay rights, abortion rights, etc. the problem i have with the democrats is their tendency towards socialism - that the government should create jobs and provide healthcare and other benefits to all citizens. it will never be possible in a country with such a large population. they also think outsourcing is evil and the government stop it. i prefer to let the market decide the beneficiaries and have minimal government involvement.

what do you think? your thoughts...

Although I wouldnt vote for either if I were allowed to, since they both belong to the Empire and have a history of hegemonic mainstream politics; I prefer Democrats to Republicans. Look at it this way- Republicans look at the issue at large and try an immediate solution, while Democrats go to details of analysing things and look for solutions in the long run. Republicans want to cut off subsidies to old and unemployed that will force them to look for employment, while democrats support the monthly subsidies and yet look out for improved economy. Of course in a system like the US, ppl expect the government to help create jobs. And by the way, Republicans dont support liberal immigration policies- they will do anything and everything to economically benefit americans at the cost of all others like us.

So if you're in a hurry to get a green card, campaign for Kerry!

You Decide 2004

Kerry or Bush?

CNN or Fox News?

I am interested to find out what Nepalis think of the two parties. Are most people here rooters for the Democrats because the word "liberal" is appealing? Or is there a more compelling reason?

i share the dislike for both the republicans and the democrats. However, it's my prediction that most nepali's in america would prefer Democrats over Republicans. Democrats have a more lenient policy toward immigrants, they believe in special programs for minorities and their socialist leaning makes them more appealing to the average working-class america.

one other reason why people tend to dislike republicans is because their proponents make scray statements like these:
"i prefer to let the market decide the beneficiaries and have minimal government involvement. "

Lets take it this way, whoever has whatever policies those are focused to nation's common interest and without any doubt they are good. Now situation is little bit different, its more important to think BUSH or KERRY rather than Democrates or Republican. American should vote according to individual attitude. I am little concern about fate of tomorrow. Whoever he would be, he would be the one to lead the world. But question here is how effectively?

Bush is by nature hardcore leader. Who knows, if he will elected for another course which country would be another victim, Iran or Syria. We have seen BUSH during this period. Though Kerry too lame to be president, America got no choice other than him.

I loved the bumper sticker i saw the other day:
"When Clinton Lied, nobody Died"

Really, there are more wanna be terrorists out there than there were before 9/11 and thanks to Bush with his Iraq War. For every American that died in Iraq, there's gotto be 25-50 Iraqis dead. Think about it.

"Democrats" all the way!!!

Even though we are in a different country, if one is serious about politics then they would know that one way or another it affects us too! Either Republicans or Democrats both are into the same rat race! But there's no way anybody should vote BUSH after what he has done. If I could I would vote kerry. And by the way, I do care about war on terror, gay rights and abortion rights( as being a woman). The war on IRAQ was unneccessary........more than 1000 american soldiers are killed and not to mention about the thousands of Iraqis killed in war. First of all, Media here don't even mention about the facts of war. Did u know that more than five hundred thousand children died because of the previous Iraq war sanctions?? If we are human enough then yes I would care about war on terror...... a completely wrong war!!

I have been to "against the war" protests here and boy it makes sense! Any of you who are interested to know about the real american politics checkout " zmag.org". And click on znet and u can find all the coverups of this government, facts of Iraq war or any other countries. It is an ultimate progressive website and has tons of information from A-Z. Gay rights are equally important... they are people too u know! They have feelings ....yeah it might sound weird but the reason behind that is that our society is not used to it! And as a woman, it would be a big mistake to vote BUSH knowing that he is sending us back to be a barefoot pregnant woman of 1920s. Who the hell is he to take the basic rights from women? In April there were more than a million women protested against BUSH (it was the largest rally in history in D.C) yet it was not hightlighted in newspapers enough. They give a damn about women. So even with this reason alone I wouldn't vote for Mr. DUMBASS!

they have basically the same politics. i would vote for neither.. it wouldnt make a difference to me or the people i care about (people of color). however, since a supreme court justice who is more liberal is retiring very soon, i'd vote kerry just so that they'd put a democrat in there.

Maximum20,

Is that really such a scary statement. How much has the "special" programs really helped the minorities and the poor? It only reinforces their belief that they are "victims" and that the government should provide them with benefits right on their doorsteps. Personally, I'd like to see a market-based solution where the poor are provided incentives to participate in the economy, maybe by taking over jobs currently gobbled up by the growing number of illegal immigrants who come through Mexico everyday. Of course, that would involve clamping down on the movement of illegal labor through the southern border. But given the current state of the country after 9/11, that has to happen anyway. Tightened security at the ports and airports won't mean much if the border with Mexico remains porous.

how about green party or independent???

bush is funny and the way he laughs is priceless....kerry looks shady and seems confused on the lot of the issues.

but one thing for sure....americans or non americans and in america or not in america, this election will have direct or indirect impact on ur lives.

i personally am still undecided and looking forward to the presidential debates.

"Republican" you touch on a lot of issues and if i were to respond to all of that.. this will turn into a full-fledge dems vs. reps battle. I also want to reiterate that i see too many flaws with both parties.
To address some of your questions: The effect of special programs for minorities on their psychology is a very real issue. That was not really what i was getting at. I thought you implied that Free Market should be encouraged and govt should have as little involvement as possible. First, a lot of republicans are against this. the involvement of fed in U.S. market economy is what many claim makes the american economy so strong. My point was that, government intervention in the nation's economy is important for the well being of all the citizens. It's good to hear that you are a little different than the extreme-right Republicans and that you do consider the plight of the poor in America. I do not believe in an economy where you either get rich or you just die poor.

Also, although this is a whole new debate, my views on the influx of illegal immigrants from mexico is very different than yours (and the moajority if the americans). If you have read the recent Time article and are able to identify it as filled with xenophobia backed my infalted and baseless stats about illegal immigrants, then you'll see my point. I think it is wrong to try to forcefully curb the influx without addressing the problems that cause people to migrate into america. This brings in issues about Free trade and the american domination of the Mexican regime. But that's how america functions. Its myopic leaders are always driven by prospects of business profits and never care to pore over the possible repercussions of their actions and policies. Many fail to see the connection at all. This is manifested in Iraq, Afghanistan, the middle east and almost every corner of the world where americans are trying to "correct" past mistakes with fire-power.

I guess we agree that there should be government intervention to provide checks and balances to a capitalist economy. We'll probably disagree on how much intervention. My major problem with the Democrats is their socialist tendencies - I simply do not believe that the government should be as involved as the Dems want to be. Socialism will never work in a country as large as the United States.

As for illegal immigration, it should be stopped immediately. I'm not so worried about the Mexicans coming in as much as I am about how easily they seem to cross the border. Its scary if you look at it as a security issue. I understand how important illegal labor is to the US economy. But if the Mexicans who are already in the US are to be legalized, the influx has to be stopped, because it will only encourage a mass exodus from Mexico. The US hegemony over Mexico is barely an issue here. People would migrate regardless, as long as the US is perceived as a land of opportunity and dreams.

Well! Truthfully I am not voting for Bush or Kerry evethough I am fiscally conservative democrat. The pair of Kerry-Edwards is not attractive. My best bet is stay out of it and accept whatever happens. As long as I do not put my head out on politics, I could be happy either way.

Just my opinion hope not to offend anyone.
