Some of you might have already read the news but I felt sad that mob rule is growing in Nepal. Reportedly some locals beat up Bharat Keshar Singh, a close aide to King Gyanendra over the issue of an accident. Here is what I feel about it...

Democracy seems to have taken its ground but with it has come the anarchy in the country. Rule of law has not been respected in the country and most issues are being settled through violence in Nepal. The beating of Bharat Keshar Singh is just another example. According to Kantipur Online, hundreds of people flocked around Lainchaur and beat Bharat Keshar and torched his vehicle on fire reportedly for his mishandling of a motorcycle owner.

Kantipur online(www.kantipuronline.com, June 21) writes:

Locals at Lainchaur on Tuesday evening beat up president of World Hindu Federation Bharat Keshar Singh and his two sons-Ajaya Keshar and Ananta Keshar. The enraged locals also torched their Toyota Corolla car, registration number Ba 1 Cha 6689.

It says that the scuffle began when Bharat Keshar's car hit a motorcycle parked in front of the Malla Hotel in Lainchaur. Though the media has potrayed it in a one-sided way, I guess both the parties must have had some part to play in the accident. Reportedly Keshar started to scold the motorcycle owner on the issue of the accident. Yet, only the two parties involved know the truth.

The attack on Keshar was a sign of growing mob rule prevailing in Nepal. It is reported that the students of ASCOL were involved in the attack against Bharat Keshar. They even torched his vehicle on fire.

I do not approve of violent means of getting to the justice. We have to rely ourselves on the rule of law if we are to live in a civilized world. Otherwise, we will be no different to Iraq where one might kill others at any time. The government has a daunting task of not going against the people and yet trying to run the country based on the rule of law. Will it be successful?

There have been doubts cast over the success of the government in maintaining law and order in the country specially in the new scenario where people have been encouraged by the success of their(relatively) violent protests in bringing down the King. This is a time when people feel that they can do anything and everything. We need to restrain ourselves from going against the law.

If Keshar Singh did wrong, we should bring him to justice through the courts. Why are the courts created anyway? I have this growing fear that we might end up inviting anarchy in the country.

There should not be violent means against those who do not subscribe to what we believe. In democracy, everyone gets the opportunity to hear and to get heard. And, basically that is the true democracy we want. We want to co-exist together with all the fellow Nepalese. Guilty should be punished but through the law.
What do you people think?

I would support rule of law, but see it's not taking care of animals like Bharat Keshar and Sacchit Shamshers, so mob rule is necessary for these slaves of gyane.
They should have a list of Nepali people's enemy like Bharat Keshar and they should be dealt accordingly. Next should be Sachchit Shamsher, Sharad Chandra Shaha, Kamal Thapa, Tanka Dhakal, Tulsi Giri, and their lanthaks

If our country is built up with mentality such as Nepali soul, lonely1 and those mobs from Ascol then we will never get there.
Who is to decide who is wrong and right, unless you go the legal way?
We have taken initiative to change Nepal for the betterment of the people, revised constitution should make law prevail in every case. This is the only way we can see any hope for Nepal

kiddo and lalpari,
you are right we need rule of law, but it's not working until the constituent assembly writes a new constitution. Besides, you saw what happened to the likes of kamal Thap and Shrish Shamsher bwansas or for that matter Khum Bdr Khadka. Unless people also start taking some action, the rule of law is not going to work.
Let me explain.
In your USA or wherever you are, people today talk about freedom, individual rights, democracy, accountability, right? How come? Because in the 60's blacks and women rose up against the racist patriarchal systems and broke those laws in the form of civil disobediance, etc. etc. protests, disobeying rules, etc... Today you can't say anything bad against blacks or women. In Nepal too, Bharat Keshar and gang are the people who are symbols of age-old feudal, casteist/racist, and patriarchal social structure that must be dismantled. Because constituent assembly and the like are taking time---and there is fear that the commision's report will meet the same fate as Mallik report of 2046/1990 movement, people need to be vigilant.
Now
on the specific issue, don't side step the main issue
that is, why was Bharat Keshar and his sons beaten up? Bibas, did you read the whole news?
He and his sons were beaten because they first beat up the motorcycle owner. Now if you are talking ABOUT RULE OF LAW, WHAT DO YOU SAY ABOUT THE ACTIONS OF BHARAT KESHAR AND HIS GANG? SHOULDN'T HE BE LIABLE FIRST? SHOULDN'T YOU HAVE CRITICIZED HIS RACIST/SUPREMACIST ATTITUDE AND BEHAVIOR FIRST? OR ARE YOU HIS NEPHEWS HERE ON SAJHA LAND?
IF YOU HAVE A BASIC IDEA OF SCIENCE, U'LL UNDERSTAND THAT THERE IS ALWAYS A REACTION WHERE THERE IS AN ACTION. BARABARIC BHARAT KESHAR AND GANG INITIATED THE ACTION--MOB RULE IF YOU WILL--AND THE SHERPA MOTORCYCLIST HAPPENED TO GET SUPPORT FROM ONLOOKERS AND BYSTANDERS.
WHILE I THINK IT WAS BAD, I SEE NO REASON WHY YOU WOULD RAISE FINGER AT THE SIMPLE PEOPLE--SHERPAS, ONLOOKERS, AND OTHER STUDENTS AND NOT BHARAT KESHARIS. IS IT BECAUSE THEY DESERVED TO BE BEATEN FOR NO FAULT OF THEIR OWN? bY YOUR ASSUMED--BUT NOT STATED LOGIC--THEY COMMAND LESS MORAL LATITUDE BECAUSE THEY ARE LESS WELL-KNOWN; THEY ARE NOT SINGHAS, SHAHAS, RANAS, MALLAS, ETC.
AND YOU ARE NOT ASHAMED OF TALKING ABOUT RULE OF LAW? MAYBE IN YOUR NEXT POSTINGS, KIDDO AND LALPARI WILL TALK ABOUT FAIRNESS AND JUSTICE!!!!! GIVE ME A BREAK!!!!!

lonely1,
Look at my post, I have read the news before writing my own analysis. CA elections and the formulation of subsequent constitution should not be an excuse for mob rule.

And hey,
can't we take care of those people throught the rule of law? As I already said before, if Keshar manhandled the guy first, he should be brought to justice. What the heck is the role of the police force? Grow up...we got to respect differences and act by the rule of law.

What if tomorrow there will be another driver who runs into some accident and he is beaten up the same way rather than taking to the jail? Hey....life isn't that simple once you choose to live in a society. There are people who break rules and there are laws to punish them. Eye for an eye isn't the way to go ahead....

Nepalese students are more focused on tod phod and politics than studies. They are learning from their guru , maoist.Students have no hope and future .They are driven by some selfish politicians and these students die for their agenda and make them rich. All in all ,this is not good.Well, one may agree what they did to bhrat kesar was right but the point is this kind of incidents from bunch of stupid students can happen all the time anywhere.Mob rule doesn't rock and should not be encouraged!!!

nepalese students have only themselves to be blamed. if i were a shrewd politician, i too would try my best to exploit the situation and "use" students to raise my voice against others and make my point.

i don't understand why nepalese students have failed to understand this simple logic which is by no means a rocket science.

Loote Loote Loote,

What would you do if you were on a bike and you happen to touch a car. The guy comes out of the car and beats you up and asks you "Chinchas malai?". Well I think you got the answer when the man who beats you up is "Bharat Keshar Singh" who is the aide of the King...

Tell me what you would have done. I believe the ASCOL guyz did a good job wacking up Singh. Could you imagine he was invited for Farewell Party of the British Embassador, these royalists are still walking with all their glory?

gopachee , your mentality is just sad!!

with your kind of mentality in nepal .do not hope anything will change for better.

So what this guy beats you up? so you kill the guy?or you report to police?is there any law?
now you may argue , they are powerful people.well, bring fairness and equality in justice and law .What is democracy for??if you argue that then this kind of story happens in most communist country to most capitalist country.Powerful people always have an advantage. That is bitter truth .learn to live with than and no you friend maoist don't believe in fairness and equality either.

and how can you say 100% that motorcyclist wasn't on fault??that is point .so reporters said that ?or eye witness said that?you know nepalese media it is always looking to make someone punch bag.

and i am not saying .it might not have been car fault. may very well ,could have been

I dont have much sympathy for Mr Bharat Kesari Singh but lynching is wrong no matter who the victim is. In my opinion, this is a shameful act and such acts should not be acceptable or condoned in a democracy.

Having said that, I fail to understand why Mr Singh and his sons, as per media reports, chose to scold, and thus pick up a fight, with the motor cyclist they hit. Mr Singh is not particularly known for being a bright man, but this was sheer stupidity by any measure given the high profile of Singh and the current atmosphere in the country. Accidents happen, especially in a country like Nepal where most drivers dont follow traffic rules and have little civic sense, and sadly, the driver in the car always gets blamed, but scolding a victim is not the smartest thing to do in such a case.

I wish him a speedy recovery and hope we don't see vigilante justice like this any more.

I guess most of you guys are living in US rt now and sharing the ideas. You must have learnt a lot since now by even seeing what actually is rule of law and should try to give the real meaning to Nepali living in Nepal. But instead you people are also encouraging these pamaperd students to do more bad things. Can you imagine such incident in US where the students or craowds overtaking the situation and pelting or smasing wrong doers? What would hapen if this starts to happen there?

Some of you are advocating what had happened recently by Bharat Kesar or to Bharat Keshar was good. If you think people themselves can punish the real culprits what is security for? Maoists are claiming they can punish the real culprits, so why not to handover this responsibility to them? They are far more powrful than the group of students of ASCOL of nearby campuses. I really feel sorry for these empty minded students who driven by the ill minded politicians. When Nepalis get killed in Iraq they smash the national and private properties in Nepal. When someone like Ritik Roshan expresses his views these groups try to distort the meaning and start vandalism in our country. Who are the sufferers?

On the otherhand you guys claim you are the real supporter of democracy holding the idea of anarchy. `Might is right` holds no meaning to make Nepal real Nepal.

IMI,

I think the story was the other way. Some blok in a motorcycle hits a car and the car owners and his sons come out of the car and rough up the kid. Which was wrong thing to do to start with. Imaging one guy being beaten up by three guys despite his fault. Mob will be sympathetic to that. Once the locals found out these ppl were king's ppl it made the situation worse. I thiink that the car owners have been doing that stuff in their whole life and thus got used to it. Not just in traffic, may be in every way of their life that is the way they take care of their business just because they are linked to the palace. The power of palace probably gave them that bully mentality to kick whoever's ass they want. But im telling u this man. Its not the right time for the royalists to be known or create an issue. Because the blood is still warm in the street. People are looking for reasons to even out things. I wish ppl would do that to paras soon. I dont think its wrong to be a royalist if they were not directly involved in doing such things like those ppl were doing but if u are one, just stay home and be cool until things settle down.
