Trying to get some idea about job prospect in Nepal. I am thinking about going back to Nepal as my family is back there.
I was wondering if there's any opportunity for someone with computer engineering degree from the US with work experience in IT field.
I haven't been to Nepal for several years now, and I don't know anyone who is into Tech/IT field in Kathmandu, Nepal. If you've returned to Nepal and/or working in the IT field, you may be able to answer this question.

If you are planning to return to Nepal focus on opening a business rather than working 9-5 job which will take you no where. There is a demand for EVERYTHING at current situation back home. Lot of foreign investors are willing to invest but the govt. keeps stopping them due to fear of country leading more towards privatization which has been a major issue for Nepal from a long time. Fear of change. This will be a great opportunity for you to make good money & at the same time helping the people/country. For ex, Opening an ISP would have been a great idea few years back but currently there are one too many ISPs in Nepal but still you can provide something others have not..goodluck

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sudip.smartkrishi&hl=en

If you are planning to go and just join as a developer in one of the software companies, it won't add any significant value in either monetary terms or from career perspective too. The major problem Nepal is facing these days is not IT developers, there are very resourceful developers back home but the problem is Government initiatives to implement IT in Nepal.

The one and only reason the moment you implement IT in Nepal( Government Offices), there are little/very less chances of corruption and they don't want it. I will give you two simple examples to illustrate it .

a. Recently one private software company develop a software so that you don't have to stay in the long line instead of it you can stay in a virtual line to get petrol from petrol pumps during Nakabandi Crisis. Government buy that software but never implemented it, everyone knows the reason behind it.

b. Everyone from Nepal have to go to Shram Mantralaya to put that Shram sticker, you need to stay in a line for a whole day to get it done or pay someone 1000-1500 to get it done in 2 hours. They never utilize the virtual Queue technology knowing that the moment they install the application, the money they are making under table goes away.

It is not because they are lacking smart developers but the bureaucracy itself is a big hindrance for development of IT sector. These days CAN Infotech has become the dispaly of new gadgets only, no innovations.

But despite these negative factors, there is a whole opportunity if you want to be IT entrepreneur yourself. The focus should be made to solve real time problems people are facing in their daily lives through the use of IT. For example- Issues in Agricultural sector, Education, Health Care and Tourism. One of the ideas that came in my mind- build an app that can help you find the semi skilled technical workers such as electrician, plumber, Dakarmi through an mobile app.

Thank you all so much for the information. I think the information will be helpful for others as well.
KG21 bro, thanks for the links.
The video was encouraging, Thukka bro.
Vlan bro, opening an ISP sounds like a big endeavor, both in terms of initial investment and experience. I've a good background in Cisco routers/switches, but still feel that opening an ISP is little too big for the first venture.
Ohio bro, thank for all the links and information.

@shiva_linga
Can you share some details on agro-based business like the person's/ group success stories, how they started and made the progress?

Nepal Today has uploaded a lot of youtube videos on agro success stories. It can be a good start for initial warmup and to follow the trends.

While I agree that there are lot of scope of agro based industry in Nepal but main problem in Nepal is stability. Not trying to discourage and I would appreciate if someone explain me how we a business flourishes in such unstable environment like Nepal. For example, how would you transport your veggies when there is no fuel?. Also how would you deal with such a high percentage of inflation rate. Currently it's close to 12%. How would you do business when no one wants to take any credibility ? Yes I agree with everyone that there are lot of opportunities but no business will survive in long run in those kind of unstable condition. I am not saying you shouldn't go for business. In fact everyone here like you to succeed but it's a foolish to make any decision by hearing only pros.

Since your background is IT i think you would do much better in IT instead of going to agro field where you need to start from ground up. IT industry will not die anytime soon. Big data and analytics are the future.
Good luck.

jerryswari...opening an ISP was just an example. Bottom line is my recent visit to ktm made me realized the extreme demand for almost anything and willingness of people to pay good money for the right product/service. Good news is you can avoid high-level competition in present situation and create a competitive advantage in long-term. Look into from business perspective than planning to be an 10-5 employee again when you go back. If you don't have any prior experience read a book on economics and few other books to get ideas. I know the situation back home is not ideal but at the same time new businesses are flourishing too as well as old, you will see yourself when you go back. Something to think about. It's something I'd personally do however decision is all yours.

@jerry....I am a business major. You will have first mover advantage in Nepal if you start unique business. Innovation and entrepreneurship is needed in Nepal. I have personally known couple of people who returned to Nepal and are now CEOs of their company and are very happy. It all depends on your will power and goals. Life, after all, is nothing but a dream. You live your dream. Best wishes.

agro based business has a lot of scope in nepal:
-bio veggies(un-/seasonal veggies,tomatoes) and fruits(all sorts from apples,oranges+citrus fruits,KIWI,mangoes etc) are being produced and also increasingly exported to india .lots of returnees from middle east and far east are bringing new technologies and its getting high tech and industrial scale
-goats/chicken/swine farms( nepal still imports goats worth 2B rupees yearly).chicken and pig are imported to north east india,bhutan and burma as well
-dairy production
-olive,truffel farming has been started
-fischery is doing great mainly freshwater fish in hills and other in terai as well.i personally know a guy who export fresh water carps worth a million rupees yearly to indian hotels
-ostrich farming
medicinal herbs cultivation is getting bigger and advanced with road access in karnali and western hills.there is dire need of processing factories
-tea and coffe farming in hill slopes.nepal produces more coffee than it consumes and brands like himalayan java are doing great
-beekeeping is one of the most rewarding job with less capital
-the central hills have been devasted with the earthquake, the people there need someone to invest for their guesthouses,inns and hotels there. and i bet every penny spent there is 10 times its worth in long run.its not agro based but it is the thing now and i ve been told that a lot of marwaris and foreigners are kust buying rubbles of hotels and guesthouses from the former owners so as to make new ones .

@jerryswari,
I am also debating about returning to Nepal for quite a time now (dreaming of making into a specific program is the only thing holding me here. I will need GC even to apply so I am running short on patience after all these years of wait). So far I have thought about either goat (khasi) or fish business in Nepal. If you do return to Nepal please keep us posted through sajha. On my return I will be open to the idea of partnership or investment should you need it.
