All Nepalese,

King of Nepal do not do good to Nepal.

So seven political parties are the best for Nepal. Bahun must be the leader or ruler of Nepal.

Do you think so?

Ranas are also Chhetries,

In fact, Jung bahadur, the first Rana, had Kunwar (A chhetri absolutely) as his last name.

I suggest all of friends to use the term INDOARYAN TRIBE instead of Bahun Chettri,Thakuri or DAlit. Actually what you should know is that Caste and Race is Different thing. Bahun, chettri, Dalit Thakuri, sarkee fall into same race. Bahun is not a racial term. Can you recognize who is bahun or dalit or chettri just by looking.?They have the same language and cultures.About 500 years ago some indoaryan Entered nepal and made their own socilization here. In a long course of time they developed their own culture, mostlybased on Hindu system but slightly difference than from India.Rani Mukherjee is also a bahun-Bengali, Madhuri is also a bahun...so on but they use differnt language. Newars are also Indoaryan tribe especially higher caste Newar like Shrestha and pradhan. They also came from India and imposed caste system in Kathmandu, That is why newars have also caste system like hajam, dhobi, kami Jyapoo etc. Pradhan means Pradhan Kaji in Malla period. Pradhan were Thakuri--A rajasthani tribe rajpoot. But they socialized in Newari culture and became Newars. But Newars have mixed culture. The local residents of Kathmandu might have been Jyapoo.

"Can you recognize who is bahun or dalit or chettri just by looking.?"

Yes, usually I can. It has to do with different lvls of admixture. Some Ranas can look like bahuns, but most Chettris I come across don't look like bahuns. But Chettris are a more heterogeneous group than are bahuns, and so things get confusing. Many Chettris look no different from Magars or Tamangs, and many look like bahuns. Go to cybernepal.com and search for Priyanka Karki. She looks no diferent from most bahuns I know.
What's hilarious is that there's this "model" with surname Sharma who looks like a Newar. My point still stands though. As you go up the caste ladder, there's less admixture.

"1. Why is it that we always have to think in terms of what's happened elsewhere."

Because their experiences can teach us valuable lessons. The best way to deal with divisions imho is to embrace rather than ignore them. We need to learn to live with each other. You can't just pretend that there's no caste system in Nepal. The caste system is a part of Nepali culture, whether people like it or not. Just because in America discrimination is shunned upon, does not mean it's non-existent. Use this analogy in the context of Nepali culture.

"However, is it too much to ask that the effects of such a stratification not allow fundamentally unjust (no matter how you look at it) practices, such as "untouchability" and oppression? "

I agree with this point completely. But realize that we can have stratification without oppression. You want to do away with stratification completely. That's too much of a stretch. We need to do things one step at a time.

Let's do away with pipe dreams. People are not gonna mix up all of a sudden.

come to think of it again, Nepal should be ruled by someone who has some kind of inter caste relationship or is a mixed caste kid of as many caste as possible. Preferably a little mix of Indian, Chinese, and American vayo vane ta it would be almost like a godsend person to rule nepal and would end to all kinds of political and social debates in the country. hoina ta sathi ho?

What kind of a thread is this?

Thankfully, sajhaites are not as idiot as the first poster to fall for this kind of dirty game.

No Bahun. No Chhetri. No Baisya. No Sudra. Whoever, he/she must be son/daughter of Nepali. From People. Just from People.

Thuggeout Jee
You are somewhat right that some chhetri look like Magar but not like Tamang especially in western parts of Nepal. But in eastern parts majority are not different than so called Bahun. If you go to Dhankuta and come across some Thapas(Dhankuta is the original places of some thapa kajii)or go to Okhaldhunga and come across some Basnet and Karkee or Khadka you can not recognize them as chhetri or Bahun unless you see them In Jajaman. But If you go to Jumla you can easily distinguish a chettri from Bahun. I suggest you to read the book by Dor Bahadur Bista to understand this phenomena. As I said you earlier Chettri is not a race but a profession. When Endoaryan came to Nepal along with their Hindu based caste system they initially settled in westen part of Nepal, especially in sinja of Jumla district. The indigineous people of Jumla at that time is believed to be KHAS- a magar looking tribe with their own culture and practice. But Indoaryan imposed caste system on them also-according to Dor Bahadur Bista.Later they also became chhetri. That is why some Chetri in western Nepal are totally different from the Chettri from eastern Nepal. The original chetri from India also spread to eastern Nepal. But in eastern Nepal they remained in pure form without mixing. That is why in eastern nepal they look like Bahun. See Surya Bahadur-is he different from Krishna prasad in look. If gyanendra shaves his head and keep TUPI and performs Jajaman, does not he look like Bahun. I see no difference between Damai and Bahun in look. Damai girls are very very beautiful.

Kshyatriya (chhetri) is not a race. Caste does not equate race. Both, the brahmins and chhetris were indo-aryan immigrants to the nepal region.

Because the chhetris are supposed to be political/warrior people, they mixed with the Nepalese mongols who inhabited the region. Which is why the chhetris of nepal look mongoloid today.

With the shah and rana family, they wanted to preserve their indo-aryan qualities so if you notice, they usually marry into their own family. Unfortunately, not only do they look mongol (as in their efforts are useless now), but the inbreeding has caused massive mental problems in their entire clan.

The Kshyatrias of India (who have not mixed with the mongols) and therefore look Indo-aryan, will not accept the nepali chhetris as true chhetris.

As for Nepalese Brahmins, some have managed to be relatively 'pure' and some, I suspect did mix with the mongols at some point because there are some brahmins who look phenotypically mixed. It's a damned if you do, damned if you don't thing: for example, if you're pure, that means you're inbred and very impure, if you're a mongol mix, you're not pure indo-aryan and therefore impure. This is probably you won't see many brahmins looking up their family history. They're afraid of being either a mongol mix or inbred.

just a comment about looks of chhetriyas,
I thought chhetris can look like anyone...किनकी बाहुन केटाले बाहुन बाहेक अरु जुन जात बिहे गरेपनि क्षत्री हुने हैन र??
त्यसो हो भने सबै थरी देखिन सक्छन् क्षत्रीयहरु depending on whom they (bahuns) married.

Dibya Raj Koirala u may be right but well! i too have done some reading well! what i read was before jastithi malla aka thiti malla was ruling nepal(then kathmandu) there weren't any caste in nepalas well as it surroundings and according to it welle guvaji were there to preform the brahimin's retuls and they couldn't pronounce proper sanskrit so thiti malla called some brahmins from india. well they came and they saw there wasn't any caste system they went to thiti malla and asked to to dismiss them cause there weren't any thing to seperate people. so his dismissed but he called four brahimins i.e 2 bhandari, jha and well i forgot the last one. well! they came and divided the people in 4 groups brahimin chettei, vaisya and sudras. well! guvaju bajhracharya etc belonged to brahimin , pradhan vaidya etc to chettri and so on. and then they marked which people could go up to kitchen of a house and who till living room and whom to chowk abd who weren't allowed to the house. than indo aryan came in sight and then 4 barna went to newar and indo aryan became brahim and chettri

now let's see about aryans
well! when they came to indians plain in the 5th centuary they didn't had any culture they had god but all were equal. when they came to indian plains they saw the caste system. all they had was wroshipping around the fire. and when they asked for indian princess to marry they got rejected cause they didn't had any caste. so they adopted brahim and chettri seeing the indians. well! that's what i studied i may be wrong. any comments?

Many Jee
I also hate the caste system. But i frequently see many threads about the fights between Newar and Bahun. Newar blames bahun for the present situation of Nepal and Bahun denies about it. But frankly speaking Newars are also a SHOSHAK BARGA like Bahun not a SOSHIT BARGA. Actual SOSHIT BARGA of Nepal are some indigineous people like Satar, Jhagar , Mushar,Tharu then some Dalit from hill like Damai, Kami then some ethnic groups like Gurung, Rai(Economically they are not so bad but they are JHGADALU but not all-they should improve their character) who have less access in politics and power, then some Hindu Madhise(who are treated as indian even now although they are hundred percent Nepalese. But these groups are high percentage in government post and technical fields as well as in politics). The living standard of Newars is far better than most Brahmin and Kshetri. They constitute less than 5% population(less than Tharu), but they have veryvery good position in academic sectors in politics-already one prime minister, Puspa lal shrestha , Mohan Vaidhya and so on... That is why it is shameful for Newar to blame others. It is appropriate for a Tharu to blame Bahun or Newar.I don not say that they are not hard working. Otherwise they would not have attained this much progress.

Another thing, what I am worried about is nobody uses the term appropriately. So I would like to briefly describe the present racial structure of Nepal.
About 6000 years ago a kind of civilisation developed in Pakistan around Indus river. These people used to speak Sanskrit as their mother tongue and worshipped Sun. They called themselves as Aryans. From Indus the word HINdus to Hindu developed. These people slowly moved towards India. But in India another civilisation existed-A Dravidian civilisation. Dravidians were the indigeneous people of India. They were darker than Aryan. It is believed that there have been the battle between Aryan and Dravidian. But Aryan were technically advanced than Dravidian and easily defeated Dravidian. At that time Ramayan was written describing the victory of Aryan over Dravidian. Ravan might have been the King of Dravidian. YOu can still see that ,most of the hindu god and Godess have the fair skin and devil dark skin. After being defeated by Aryan Drvidian moved towards the south. In the north part Aryan ruled . BUt Aryan could not chase Dravdian further south from Vindyanchal Hill. But in course of time some Aryan gradually entered the Dravidian region . That is why you still see two distinct race in south India. Mostly Darker Skinned people-supposed to be Dravidian, and fair skin people-suppose to be Aryan. BUt in pakistan you see all people fair - because no Dravidians remained there.
