Historic DC Rally of May 15, 2005: some resentment

---------Somnath Ghimire

I wanted to let you all know the outcome feelings of the people who attended the Historic DC Rally.

More than 80 percent of the DC Rally Demonstrators have the following queries: DC Rally became successful in quantity but not in quality.

1) What was the main agenda of the DC Rally?

2) Was it for the Pro-King, Pro-Democracy, Pro-Political Parties or for Opportunists?

3) Why Speakers were not sorted out? Why were they not given a certain boundary/topic to present in their speech?

4) If King Gyanendra suppressed the freedom of Speech in Nepal, why did not we do that to all Mandaless/King?s Supporters in their speech in the Rally? Why was Prem Raja Mahat given a chance to present his speech instead of singing a song? Is he a Pro-Democrat or Pro-King?

5) As it says in WWW.DCRALLY.ORG, DC Rally Committee, who are in the committee? Why the names were/are not disclosed? Or the committee without any names??..?

6) Was the DC Rally for launching ceremony of the book ?Broken Pen?? This was unknown to all of us. How did Murari Raj Sharma become the Chief Guest in the middle of the Program?

7) Why & How was Murari Raj Sharma given a title of the Commander of Democracy?

8) It was announced that, ?it?s raining now we have sorted our speakers including Sherpa?s?: Why we need to say that, demoralizing lower caste people, and we say that we need to be in diversity. Again, right after the rain stopped and Sherpa was called back to podium, what is this nonsense? As pointed out that T.Kumar of AI presented his speech under an umbrella, why not Sherpa? There were people from Tamang, Rai and Gurung as well. Where is the trend of respecting the all strata of life irrespective of all caste, color, creed, gender, origin, religion and nationality?

9) Why Murari Raj Sharma got half an hour time to present his speech and not others? Why did not we get the idea of ?INCLUSIVE? instead of ?EXCLUSIVE?? People were frustrated.

10) Why people from NJ, MA, RI, Maine, Ohio, and South Carolina were not given a minute to say their words of Democracy? As it was announced that every representative from each States will be given a chance to speak, and few got their chances including Girija Gautam, single man representing from Tennessee. Isn?t it a biased?

11) Why Nepalese Democratic Youth Council in USA became the platform for the Opportunist and the Pro-King People? Why and how the NDYCUSA is established? What is its aim? Why NDYCUSA is being used by Middle Ground People? Can?t NDYCUSA become in the Top Ground? We don?t need the second best; we need to be in the ?First Best?.

12) Why our people heard the words ?Shree Panch Maharaja Dhiraj? in the vote of thanks speech. Is this in favor of the King or against? Listen we are in the 21st century.

Where to do u get that 80% stats from?

Anyway, in my opinion most of the people who attended the rally were genuine people like our Nepe, poonte et al., but sadly, they were not the people who pulled the final strings. They were people like Mr. Murari et al., who are supposed to have direct links with NC high command. Even Mridula Koirla and other people who sang/spoke in the rally are said to have some connection with Nepali Congress.

One single person, a lawyer based somewhere in the eastcoast, contributed 1000$. Who is this guy - a genuine supporter of democracy or some ....?

Also, why was Sujata there? Why didn'tt the organisers have the guts to request her not to attend the rally? Akhir Sujata le garera bekar ma badnam khanu paryo.

One of the rally organisers is INSN.ORG? Who runs this organisation no one knows? From what I know of, some people who went into self-imposed exile in Delhi after feb 1are running this organisation and it has lots of moeny. It was one of the co-sponsor of Dinesh Prasai's tour here and also of this rally? Who are these people?

PQ1: Thanks for bringing forward good points.
Providing Murari Sharma almost an hour for his rhetoric -- is a zenith of sycophhancy on organizer's part. Why did they not limit his time? Didn't they see several people leaving as Sharma's speech lengthened?

As nepe said, the rally was a success in voicing for democracy.

Theories are always commendable and impressive but it's the practice of it that fails!

Because people are starving, we should all give our donations to KING Gyanendra??

He should eat all (68 crore and more...) and we should put a tape in our mouth and not eat.

Somu,

Almost all of your concerns are very valid and legitimate, and I hope the appropriate individuals would address them. However, here's my personal take on one of your querries with regards to why the pro-King demonstrators were allowed to take part in the rally.

As proponents of freedom and democracy, I think it only does us good if we welcome ANYBODY to partake in our programs. As you saw, even one of the most hated personalities -- Sujata Koirala -- was present at the rally, although she was not given ANY prominence -- she attended the rally just like any other ordinary Nepalis. Likewise, the pro-King people had every right to voice their opinion in our program -- to have asked them to leave would have been the same as KingG shutting us up. In a very well articulated words of Sarahana of www.samudaya.org, "One would only hope that they [pro-King people] have appreciated and enjoyed the right to dissent and that they would continue to use?and eventually learn to love and realize the significance of?such freedom."

You see, Somu, democracy is not only about freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of this or that -- if we are to be effective in democratizing the society, we must first liberalize ourselves internally. Only when we rid our minds with narrow cynicisms, and embrace openness and broaden our minds, can we begin to think of creating a free society.

Assuming a low profile very well could have been Sujata Koirala's choice. What if she just volunteered not to speak? If there has really been a framework of what to do and what not to do, from organizer's side, certainly some of the speakers would not have taken most of the time in the microphone.

It is very nice of the participants to tenderly let King supporters display their placards.
But, did it happen because of the fact that the organizers honored democratic norms?

I would credit it to rally participants rather than the organizers. In the same manner, I would have serious reservation to credit the organizers for not allowing Sujata speak.

While the organizers deserve appreciation for the rally, there are serious questions that remain unanswered. I have noticed claims floating on sajha.com that Sujata would not be allowed to speak, by people who claim not to be in the organization committee.

Personally, I took part on the program because of my stance on democracy. I did not want to witness a book ceremony, nor did I want to be listening to gibberish from outgoing government official whose opening statement would be full of false claims, if not lies. Not only that, mast-of-ceremony claimed left no stone unturned in painting Murari as a Bhishma Pitamaha of Mahabharata.

While I had preferred to stay until the last moment, there was no way for me to tolerate M. Sharma's voluminous deliberations!

So far, noone has come forward to claim to be in the organizing committee, other than a shady internet site.

We need to realize we can live without apple-shining. We need to respect ourself.
Our history, Shahas came after the downfall of Ranas in 2007. Kangres and Communists came to replace Shahas in 2046. Do we want to replace the old corrupt entity by a new one or we want to rule ourself??

Question remains: What will democracy do to us, if we have to choose Murari Sharma over Sujata Koirala?

Astu. RRB

WHY WE NEED DEMOCRACY

Denial of departure
If you can?t fly, take the road

What do you do when the immigration exit stamp is rescinded before you get to board the plane and your Jet Airways ticket is returned to you with a note ?Off-loaded by Nepal security??

Collect one?s baggage, get the airport tax reimbursed and go home to skulk and complain about the unfairness of life in autocratic regimes?

It is bizarre, this particular evolution of restricting personal liberty currently being carried out in the Nepali kingdom. Jurists, lawyers, activists, politicians and framers of constitution are refused entry into aircraft to fly to international or domestic destinations. There is no charge sheet, no prior notice, just a mysterious list (an original one, apparently updated twice since the royal takeover of 1 February) that is held close by someone in the maws of the terminal building and is referred to
on walkie-talkie by hapless immigration officials and superintendents of police.

There are not a few politicians who, still waiting for a shower of goodwill from on high, will not even announce that their boarding cards have been snatched. They tiptoe home, hoping that their show of trust, patience and obeisance will register where it needs to register, and they will get ?the call?. That is how it is beginning to work, for ministerships, ambassadorships, corruption commissionerships, and perhaps even (in the days head) National Human Rights Commissionership.

'Only when we rid our minds with narrow cynicisms, and embrace openness and broaden our minds, can we begin to think of creating a free society".

poonte babu, Ramro basna aune phul sanga sangai phuleko phul, afno suganda navae pani tyo basna aune phul ko karan basna a e jasto avas dincha. Tyantai ganaune phul ko saath ma basna aune phul rakhe ganaune phul le basna aune phul ko basna lai bisthapit gari, afno ganaune gandha phailyaucha.

Moral of the story: Durgandha bata tada rahanu nai ramro ho. Yaslai tapai narrow cynicism ko naam dina chahanu huncha bhane mero kehi bhannu chaina. Everything transparent bhaena openly embrace garna sakincha, when everything is bloody opaque how can embrace such a thing? How do u know bhitra ke cha?

"we must first liberalize ourselves internally. Only when we rid our minds with narrow cynicisms, and embrace openness and broaden our minds, can we begin to think of creating a free society."
By holding a plaque card THRASH TALKING TO KING(I am not a monarchist) ? You think that would solve the problem(you need to liberalize yourself internally first, and waht you did at the rally is not cynicism ? Your inability to incorporate the king and democracy and freedom of speech is not narrowmindedness ? and the the things you are complaining about) ? This goes for everyone that went to DC...Except for a publicity stunt ...nothing was achieved from this was it ?
