For those who want to know about the difference between "Newar" and "Jyapu", here are the main ones:
- Newar Last Names: Pradhan, Shrestha, Joshi, Vaidya, Rajbhandari, Malla,
- Jyapu last Names : Dangol, Singh, Maharjan, Gorkhali, Pachhai, Manandhar.
- All the Jatraas in Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur are conducted by Jyapu people.
- All the temples in the Valley were built and maintained by Jyapu people.
- "Jyapu" name originated from "Jya ya phu" which they called themselves during Rana period
when the valley was blocked by Ranas from importing essential goods from outside in fear
of revolt from outside.
- Before Kathmandu Valley was declared "World Heritage Site" by UNESCO in 1979, the
dress Jyapu people wore was called "Jyapu dress" and the music instrument they used were
called "Jyapu baja" and the food they ate were called "Jyapu khana". Now all the other
Newars want to call these things Newari dress, Newari baja and Newari Khana.
They didn't want to be a part of it before 1979, now they want credit for all the work Jyapu
people have done so far.
VERY Selfish and Opportunists !!!
