In the Bikram Calendar the current month is Margh. During this month the reading of the Swasthani Brata Katha is specially prevalent in the villages of Nepal. Lately tv and video games have overtaken this tradition of reading Swasthani Brata Katha mostly in cities. For NRNs the tradition of reading and listening to Swasthani Brata Katha is virtually nonexistent.

Swasthani Brata Katha is based on the Skanda Purana. The book is written in dialogue form between kumar, the son of Shiva and Agastya, a rishi of the vedic times. The tales in the book is allegorical and uses metaphors to convey the message to the reader. In summary the first 2 chapters of the book describes the Hindu creation chronology story. From the 3rd chapter on the story details Shiva's marriage to (Shakti)Shati, how they were married, their conjugal life and sati's suicide after which she went to Menaka's womb to be born as Parbati. Swasthani Brata Katha lists 51 Shakti piths (temples) spread throughout current India, Nepal, pakistan, Srilanka, Tibet (China) and Bangladesh.

In the stories of Swasthani Brata Katha the hidden aspects of the universe have been given human form so that they are relatable by the listeners. This kind of story telling engages the reader's and the listener's mind.

Today the book is mostly read in a monotonic voice without ensuring that the message is properly conveyed to the listeners. With your support inspireTrend plans to produce an audio recording of the Swasthani Brata Katha which will bring out proper understanding of this epic. Swasthani brata katha says:
Dharma filled with pride is waste,
Knowledge that is not applied is a waste,
Similarly a Hindu who does not follow the Hindu Dharma is a waste.
