I would strongly suggest to go for Grad school (assuming you have UG degree) or go through some intensive training program like Coding school. Its not the easiest route, but eventually you will feel good about yourself in the long run.
Consultancy route sounds waiyat in your case.
Networking, and enhancing skills through certifications might help.
