On Defense Department's official fact sheet {see section Overall Eligibility 1. (iii)}, if one was out of status before applying for asylum, that sub-clause might render them eligible, albeit on a case by case basis. If one was In Status during asylum application then one is definitely eligible. (But all other conditions should also be met - like maintained lawful status preceding 2 years before application in one of the listed visa categories).
