Nepali traveller deported from Nepal Airport

Tribhuwan Intl. Airport, Kathmandu

In a breach of protocol, a Nepali holding US Passport has been deported back to US from the Tribhuwan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu. Mr. Hardik Dixit was in the process of applying for Nepal visa at the TIA when personnels from Nepal Police intercepted him at the visa desk and took him for questioning.

According to Nepal Law, any Nepali Citizen who takes up citizenship of another country has to officially renounce their Nepali citizenship and hand over their Nepali passport to Nepali consulate.

Mr. Dixit had become a naturalized citizen of the United States in 2010, yet he had not initiated any protocol to return his Nepali passport or fill the necessary documents.

Chief Investigator of Nepal Police, Chudamani Kharel has said that the Nepal Government has given strict orders to send back any ex-Nepali Citizens who have not officially renounced their Nepali citizenship.

Visa desks in TIA are now currently equipped with passport database where officers check names and photos of travellers. If there is a match with any Nepali names then they are required to inform the Police personnel in standby.

The newly elected NRN officials were not able to be reached for comments. NRN has been heavily active in dual citizenship talks and have been very successful in their demands lately.

Reporting live from Tribhuwan International Airport.
