I had a similar issue happen to me recently. One reason this occurs is when a cable inside the mac loses connection with one of the boards. My mac had a fall not long ago and this issue started occurring. I took it to the apple store and they fixed it for me. I had the warranty but i think the total cost was around 50 bucks. So definitely take it to a apple store and have them look at it.
