There can be 8 combination of 3 numbers that equal 36 when multiplied. Here are the numbers and their sum.

1, 6, and 6 = 13
1, 4, and 9 = 14
2, 3, and 6 = 11
2, 2, and 9 = 13
3, 3, and 4 = 10
1, 3, and 12 = 16
1, 2, and 18 = 21
1, 1, and 36 = 38

Only one of the sums is repeated twice that is 13. So if the salesman saw the number 13 on the house next door then he couldn't answer the question without having 3rd hint. So when the woman said the eldest plays piano then there can be only one son with the eldest age. So the ages of her sons are 2, 2 and 9. And the number he sees on the house next door is 13.
