I thought you were a smart guy but you don't know this simple thing.
When you put a solid object in water, you see that it displaces water. When you step in a bathtub full of water, the water spills because the volume you occupy will result in the same volume of water displaced.
Same thing with things in air but you don't see air and molecular bonding of air is not tight as solid or liquid so it flies around in a distributive manner.
