This guy/girl or his/her friend "sent" his wife to US for a conference. If it was himself who went to US, it would be 'he was selected' or something. If it is private company owned by himself, then he could have 'sent', though :) . So, the so little info provided in the thread gives me some sense on the husband's attitude. At least, i would not say " i sent my wife" to participate in such and such conference.
