Nepali student Samanata Shrestha murdered at Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG - 11:00 p.m. Update: This Facebook picture of Samanata Shrestha is now the profile picture of Virginia Tech students wanting to show support for the young woman.

According to arrest warrants filed by Blacksburg Police Shrestha is the victim of a weekend homicide after she disappeared on Saturday.

While police have not released where the crime scene is, homeowners on a rural road in Blacksburg found a black Mercedes that police say is tied to  murder investigation. Neighbors tell WSLS they notified police Monday morning.

The car was found on the 600 block of High Meadow Road, just five minutes off of Route 460. No details of the condition of the car or what was found in the car have been released.

Neighbors were too shaken to speak about details.

Virginia tech student 22-year-old Jessica Ewing of Blacksburg is charged with murder .Virginia Tech graduate 23-year-old Keifer Brown of Blacksburg is charged with accessory after the fact.


They are being held without bond. Police have not said how the suspects knew the victim.

Shrestha was a member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha, a co-ed service based fraternity on Virginia Tech's campus.

Monday members reached out on social media posting a memorial.

In comments friends said that she was a” kind-hearted person” and that “words are truly insignificant in expressing their sadness of the loss of a fellow Hokie.”

They did not want to comment to the media---but say they are keeping her family in their thoughts and prayers.

3:53 update: Search warrants obtained by WSLS 10 show Samanata Shrestha as the victim in this case. Police have not confirmed the identity of the victim at this time.
 
Update Noon:

Virginia Tech police says one suspect is a Virginia Tech student and the other is a recent graduate. The suspects live off campus in Blacksburg.

However, they say there is no immediate threat to the university community.

The suspects, Jessica Michelle Ewing and Keifer Kyle Brown, are in custody. 

Virginia Tech Police would like to remind all community members of the following:

  • Be aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts.
  • Report all suspicious people and circumstances immediately.
  • Call Virginia Tech Police Department immediately to report all suspicious people and circumstances.
Update 11:30:
More details on this incident are expected to be released later this afternoon. Stay with WSLS as we follow this developing story. 

Update 11:20: 
Blacksburg police have located the black Mercedes associated with this case. They wish to thank the public for their assistance. 

Update: Blacksburg police have arrested Jessica Michelle Ewing and Keifer Kyle Brown. Ewing, 22 of Blacksburg, is charged with murder, while Brown, 23 of Blacksburg, is charged with being an accessory after the fact.

Blacksburg police are looking for a black Mercedes in connection with a homicide investigation that started on Sunday. The car they're looking for is "a Black 2004 Mercedes, C320, 4 door Sedan, with Virginia registration of JJZ-3731".

Police think the vehicle is unattended. No further details about the homicide have been released at this time.
