I think most people's fear of GMOs stem from Monsanto's practices and rightly so. Monsanto, like most for-profit multi-national companies, has gone through lengths around the world to control agricultural crops, particularly in developing nations and destroying livelihood of farmers. So, for this reason, Monsanto should be vociferously opposed in Nepal and elsewhere.

However, GMOs have been viewed through a very narrow lens lately. Farmers have been breeding plants for better yield, resistance of disease, among others, for hundreds, if not thousands of years (mind you, that is also GMO). If you look at the food you're eating at the table, chances are most of it is GMO. More importantly, when you equate all GMOs to be bad, you're also doing disservice to thousands of researchers in universities and organizations that are truly devoting their careers to improve food crops around the world with advent of more precise technologies (like RNAi).

And finally, if you don't form your opinions based on splashy journalism (just like the climate change deniers), but rather with scientific data (that is peer-reviewed), there is scant evidence of it in being harmful, when put through rigorous meta-analyses. This safety has been verified by both US and EU regulatory bodies. Surely, what is being done to GMO, like the overuse of pesticides and herbicides afterwards, is a completely different story. Stay informed!
