It is quite pity that Brahams ( supposed to follow the path of Brahma) made it forbide to Lower caste like sudras and vasnavas because they thought if they were given a opprtunity then it will lead to revolution against them. It will end the delux life of those crook Brahamas. They were so sucessful to manupulate the minds of kings and great warriors. Yes, if You read and understand plus reading everyday keeps you in your track of ideology and good way. It doesnot make you out of sin reading mantra, puran or ramayan. Conclusion is to take from inner soul, it makes me laugh looking at ppl reading vedas, purans and gayatri mantra everyday but commiting crime and sin. They still dont understand the deeper meaning of it.
