idk 2013, I should tell you that Vedas cannot be understood by mental reasoning. The "smritis" of Vedas are transcendental in nature and requires higher states of consciousness rather than just waking and dreaming consciousness. In other words, Vedas are beyond mind. Also, you need to understand that "WHEN ALL KNOWN THINGS COME TO AN END, WHAT REMAINS IS SILENCE." Human language is inadequate to describe Brahman. Brahman is not this, not that. Therefore, Vedic people used symbols to understand the deeper meaning of reality. For example, the symbol of "OM" is extremely elaborative when you look inside it. Vedas don't attribute animals by saying poor animals, but the symbol is to compare the mental state of a goat and a human being. Obviously, humans are superior than goats in mental states because we can think. However, in many humans there are goat's mentality. It is this mental state of a goat that Vedic ritual use as a symbol but not as the whole goat. Goat itself is Brahman, but in the state of ignorance, it's mental states has been deluded. So is the case with humans. Humans are deluded because of false knowledge and ignorance. In a nutshell, symbols merely represents the mental states (desire, lust, greed, sex impulse etc.) If they sacrifice the symbol of Baboons, that means they want to get rid of sexual impulse within them which is the impediment to spiritual practices. Attributes itself are unreal in absolute standpoint because these are merely ideas. So, the idea is not about poor or higher or lower. All the beings are supreme Atman. But the embodied jiva atma is different based on the type of body and desire. You get the appropriate body based on your desires! This is the law of re-incarnation according to Vedas. Non-violence is supreme Dharma - Bhagavatam.
