I would suggest sending ATT unlocked iphone/S4 because you will never loose the unlock even if you update the phone. In CDMA phone like sprint, you will loose the unlock if you update it. As Furke said, you don't have to worry about informing them that your phone is lost. You can do whatever you want to do.
