Sprint iPhones can be insured only through Apple which is called Applexade and that cost 99$ for two year. That cover almost everything except lost and stolen. On top of that you can't unlock iPhone 5 anyways. If you're going back home, the best way is to put the phone on seasonal plan, which cost $8.99 a month and you can put it until 6 months but let me tell you that seasonal plan extend the contract for the amount of time you put it on it.
