First “Walk for Nepal” of 2012 inspires Nepalis and friends in Boston

Nepal ko Yuwa (NKY), a global Nepali youth movement, in collaboration with Boston Nepali youth and Association of Youth Organizations Nepal (AYON) organized “Walk for Nepal” on September 22, 2012 in Boston. On a nice fall day, more than 200 people participated in the 3-mile walk at Mother’s Rest Carson beach area. Nepalis and friends of Nepal from all ages, all walks of life and from as far as New York and New Hampshire participated in the walk. Nine social cause organizations participated in the walk and raised about $15,000 for various social projects in Nepal. This is the second year Walk for Nepal is being organized in Boston.

Walk for Nepal aims to mobilize Nepali diaspora to generate goodwill, raise awareness about issues in Nepal and channel meaningful, sustainable contributions to Nepali charities. Shailesh Gongal, a lead co-organizer addressed the crowd, “Each one of you is equally important to this movement because it belongs to every Nepali and everyone who loves Nepal.” This movement seeks to create a sense of commitment in the walkers and supporters to do more for Nepal.

Ama Foundation, Aama ko Ghar, Empower Dalit Women of Nepal, Friends of Maiti Nepal, Help Nepal Network, Himalayan Healthcare, Nepalese Children’s Education Fund, Nyaya Health and Virtues Children Nepal participated eagerly in the walk and raised funds for their social causes. Representatives of Greater Boston Nepali Community (GBNC), Himalayan Lions Club and Tamu Samaj also participated in the Walk. Twenty percent of the funds raised by the partner organizations and their supporters during this event will be added to a common Walk for Nepal Youth Innovation Fund to award grants to selected social cause projects in Nepal at the end of the year.

Phiroj Shyangden, a previous member of 1974 AD, and many other local talents cheered the crowd with Nepali music at the end of the walk. The walkers left with deepened connection with the social causes, the movement and each other.  Walk for Nepal is also being organized in Dallas on October 20th and in New York on November 3rd.
