The Supreme Court Tuesday convicted former minister and Nepali Congress leader Khum Bahadur Khadka of corruption, slapping him one-and-half year jail sentence along with a penalty of Rs 9.47 million.

A division bench of justices Kalyan Shrestha and Baidya Nath Upadhyay issued the verdict against Khadka, who is a former home minister.

The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) had dragged him to the court, accusing him of accumulating Rs 23.6 million that it found disproportionate to his sources of income while he held several important portfolios in the government formed by the Nepali Congress in different years. The CIAA had filed the corruption case at the apex court after the Special Court gave him clean chit.

Khadka is the fourth former minister and leader of Nepali Congress - after Chiranjivi Wagle, JP Gupta and Govinda Raj Joshi convicted in corruption charges. Wagle, Gupta and Joshi are currently in jail. nepalnews.com
